I've been trying to change my name to something thats one word/an OG name. Something like "Animate". But when I go to change it, it just says, "You can’t use language that some might find offensive." I may sound dumb here, but isn't "Animate" not a bad word? I tried this a couple times with other words, like "Wristwatch", but the same thing happened. I'm not sure if this has something to do with migrating and coding issues, but I just really want an explanation.
I have no idea if it's true and it doesn't really make sense to me but it has been claimed that if the software decides you might be a bot or similar it gives you an unhelpful message like that, so, maybe wait a day and try just a few names if you were testing a lot?
Otherwise I really have no idea except asking Mojang and I'd expect it to take a while to get an answer.
I checked the name changer and figured out why it didn't accept "wristwatch" that can be read as wris-<bad word>-ch, it seems like it should be acceptable but I don't know how it could be automated and they probably don't want to have to read all the flagged names manually.
I can't figure out why "animate" would be flagged though, both "animat" and "nimate" were accepted so it must be the word "animate" itself that's flagged, perhaps it's a typo, maybe they wanted to flag "anime"?

Of course!
The namebot must be reading "animate" as "anime" with a couple extra letters stuck in to try to get around the check.
Sorry your perfectly good names were rejected, it seems that this is something that should be complained about, perhaps they could add a popup button that allows you to swear that your name is serious and not an attempt to get around the rules and then they could check manually though I suppose that would be abused and there must be edge cases where somebody has a suggested name that could be read either way but it seems to me that actual acceptable words shouldn't be rejected just because they contain a bad word.
Then again, somebody living in Cockfosters might genuinely want to use the name of the town they lived in while somebody else might see the name as an excuse to sneak "Cock" past the bot.

They must have changed their policy, the FAQ claims they don't censor names except in extreme cases, saying that it's up to server owners and forums to ban users with unacceptable names.

I don't know that I agree with censoring "anime" anyway, it's basically just Japanese animation, the various pornographic sub genres have their own names (which I can absolutely see as censor worthy in a game played by children.)

Had you tried a lot of names before that?

Just testing.
