Hey man those are all super solid points!
Thank you for your elaborate answer!
Absolutely agree with the insomnia, its already obsolete as there is multiplayer sleep on the server.
I have set up some clear community guidelines recently, and this is something Ive deemed very important too.
I think minimap mods should be allowed and other than that anything that doesnt add a direct gameplay advantage.
E.g. shaders and or resourcepacks. No hacks nor cheats should be allowed.
As for damange indicators, everyone gets them on my server (in their actionbar).
Lightlevel overlay is something Ive never thought of / considered / known about. Thanks for sharing.
I think i would not allow that, as I agree it takes away fun at the sake of convenience.
As for freecam, and or any other client side modifications that one cannot really monitor,
it is what it is if we could ban it we would!
I'd definitely also make sure your players know all of these changes as well. If a person is trying to farm slow falling potions and nobody told them about insomnia disable, they're gonna be in for a rough time.
I both agree and disagree about this. We aim to add a sense of wonder back to the game. Challenge is also shaped by the lack of knowledge and experience with something ''new''. However this is sort of a grey-area, as we want to add content to the game to add more progression, replayability and challenge. This should never come at the cost of breaking the vanilla gameplay loop. But I think when adding content to the base game, you will inevitably hit a point where you end up ''breaking'' or well, making certain methods that are viable in vanilla Minecraft, obsolete.
Great food for thought, and something I have to remain wary of.

Title says it all.
Trying to develop the absolute best possible SMP experience on my server,
and Im curious what the MC forum thinks
If you would like to know more please send me a DM.
I would defenitly deactivate insomnia.
It can be frustrating in multiplayer if your firends refuse to use the bed and you are forced to afk because of phantoms.
Yes they add to the difficulty but when you are trying to build (lets say a tower) and have to deal with phantoms all of a sudden...
Talk about which exploits are ok to use. (TNT duping, building on top of nether roof ect)
Think about what clientside mods should be allowed and which not.
-Some minimap mods for example have player- / mob-radar.
-Damage indicators show you how much health another player / a mob has.
This can be unfair, if you pvp against someone who doesn't use one.
-Lighlevel overlay is helpful for spawnproofing. Some ppl say it reduces the difficulty,
you'r not going to have suprise mobs spawning in an area you thought you have lit up properly.
-Freecam can be abused to xray player bases ect (a texturepack is better for mining but anyway)
My projects:
-are abandoned for now. I might pick 'em up in the future.
For now i'm working on a private modpack that suit's my own playstyle.
I am gonna stay in modded 1.12.2 untill my potato dies. No mercy! :Q
