The only type of ban I know so far is the IP ban, and not how it works. If possible, I would like to know the names of types of bans, and how they work, for example, how does Minecraft know what your IP is?
There's also some sort of domain ban, used to block entire swathes of IPs coming through a server further upstream. I saw it get used on a MUD server to protect the server from a DDoS attack (the FBI got involved and the person in question tried to fake his own death).
I dunno if it's something a modern server (Minecraft or otherwise) would use or if it was something specially implemented via a service provider, though, since it comes with collateral damage (innocent players connecting via the same pathway would effectively end up banned).
when you join a server it can see the ip of the computer you are using to connect, and if that ip is on the ban list it kicks you off the server.
your ip is visible to pretty much everything online, we (the staff) can see the ip of forum members the same as any other forum owner can see the ip of its members, minecraft server owners can see the ip of that servers players, facebook can see the ip of its members etc etc
there is also name/uuid banning, they work in pretty much the same way
I'm aware Minecraft servers give admins the option to add people to a blacklist to keep them off a server, I wasn't sure about IP addresses being blocked in this way but I know there's a file that let's people put in usernames of people they don't want back on their server, or to be removed from a whitelist, which is easier.
My advise is whitelisting is generally the safest option, this obviously cannot be done reliably on a forum and IP addresses are better for blocking people without ways to circumvent the ban, assuming VPN services are blocked too.
But whitelisting does work on Minecraft private servers,
Not sure who the new user is requesting to join? don't add them, simple.
