Minecraft doesn't support skins in no-UUID versions of minecraft, so you can't really do much about it.
With mods anything is possible; all one needs to do is change the hardcoded skin URL, as well as how the data from the skin server is parsed, and people have made such mods; for example (while it is true that the current skin server is UUID-based you can also look up a player's name to determine their UUID, much as sites like namemc can obtain a player's details from a simple name search, then use that UUID to get the skin). Note that some mods simply use their own skin server but the one I linked to uses the official API, thus is the most reliable and easiest to use (according to the link I gave Retrocraft uses their own skin server, so players will need to make an account and upload their skin for it to work).
Hey,
So I run a server and it would be nice to know how to get Minecraft skins in those versions.
It's not really an option to use an old account because I don't even remember the username of my old account,
retrocraft.org just won't work for me.
So does anyone have a way to get skins in beta (In my case 1.3_01 to 1.9)?
Thanks,
Thomas C

TheMasterCaver's First World - possibly the most caved-out world in Minecraft history - includes world download.
TheMasterCaver's World - my own version of Minecraft largely based on my views of how the game should have evolved since 1.6.4.
Why do I still play in 1.6.4?
