Want to make your Minecraft experience buttery smooth
Well, do I have the solution for you, provided you play on the Java edition.
Just follow these steps and we'll be setting our render distance above 10!
Step 1: In the Minecraft Launcher go to the "Installations" tab.
Step 2: Select the version you play on and click on "edit".
Step 3: Click on the drop-down-tab labeled "More Options" and scroll down to the section labeled "JVM Arguments".
Step 4: In the section of text where it says "-Xmx2G" change the number to the desired RAM usage. For example: -Xmx8G (Note: It is STRONGLY recommended that you do NOT set this number above 2/3 of your available RAM.)
Step 5: Click "save" and enjoy your buttery smooth Minecraft!
Indeed, I only allocate 512 MB and get around 1000 FPS even in my mod's most resource-demanding biome (trees exceeding cloud level from sea level; imagine how many faces are being rendered on Fancy graphics, though this is more of a video memory issue, which is completely separate from Java heap space; a higher world does increase memory usage, which is still only around 50%; of course, newer versions need more memory and resources because of Mojang's horrific coding practices):
Also, it is possible to have issues with insufficient memory if you allocate too much memory, even on a 64 bit OS, since memory allocated to Java takes away from system resources even if it isn't all being used (this is one reason why I allocate 512 MB; with 1 GB I've gotten a "Minecraft has run out of memory" screen which had nothing to do with running out of heap space):

More RAM does not mean more FPS, it's a myth.
In fact, allocating more RAM will actually HURT performance once there is enough for the game to run without ever reaching 100% usage. Really:

512 MB = 144 FPS
1 GB = 137 FPS
2 GB = 130 FPS
4 GB = 123 FPS

TheMasterCaver's First World - possibly the most caved-out world in Minecraft history - includes world download.
TheMasterCaver's World - my own version of Minecraft largely based on my views of how the game should have evolved since 1.6.4.
Why do I still play in 1.6.4?
