Like come on. Mojang must be missing out on all of the money that other sites get from hosting people's servers. Unless I'm missing something I think this needs to be in the next major update.
Edit: They had it on Xbox and I assume on every other console as well...

Maybe I'M missing something. Why would you care if Mojang are missing out on money from hosting servers (Realms is already a ripoff)? These guys already get paid to break mods with vanity projects. They're all sending us grey guys that stand in forests grunting and bees that disappear when you go to the Nether from high in Valhalla.
Because Minecraft is not a MMORG, it is a sandbox game with survial element to it. Btw there exist private owned public servers, so you want that experience, but my experience is public servers have a very high risk of turning into anarchy, or you are left on your own with no resorces, because spawn point is grief protected. and every tree outside the area is already taken for the many hundred blocks.
There is realms. And it is an upgrade from hosting servers on your own computer like back in day, and if you are not into techinical stuff, but it is not free.
You can still make your own server for free, and share it public.

Do these work with mods/forge as well?
They can be made to work with mods. There are also free server hosting services like Aternos that can handle modded minecraft.
