Do you build at spawn or do you like to adventure around first?
I'm one of those that can never build at spawn (Unless I find something exceptional), I have to wander round first to find that ideal location, it's what inspires me to build and make a home/base. It's also one of the reasons why I never keep making a new world with each new update (Mostly due to terrain generation) and stick to my older worlds.
My main world of 9 years+ was a hollow fronted mountain back in Alpha with a lava fall round the front and waterfall round the back. (AKA a water source coming out a single block space like underground.) I was immediately inspired to build a window hole below the "Waterfall" and have a room inside the mountain there with the water running over said window hole. a "water window" if you will. Round the front I wanted to build a floor halfway up in the hollow mountain behind the lava fall. I could see a bay window there in my head right from the get go.
In beta I found this little sandpit among the trees:
I could have just filled it in, but instead I evened out a few edges and pillared up to take a screenshot, using photoshop to make a floor plan for the home, something I've never really done since. The build there today is very different from the original however due to my own fault of using mods and the place getting wrecked by ogres, just as I was starting to renovate. I ended up doing a complete re-build.
In late beta I wanted to do a more modern style home but found this mountain (i) that was too irresistible to pass up despite saying I didn't want to do another home in a mountain. This world is still active also. In picture (ii) I found this right across from where I was spawned on the beach, it was very late beta in a pre snapshot with the anticipation of 1.0 release coming. As soon as I saw it I knew I had to build up there! Also still an active world.
It's rare past 1.8 (Post release) that I get that inspiration from the environment to build, and I have to be inspired by the terrain to settle. I'm not one of these that just can just convert a village or just build the generic wooden houses you see on Reddit - either boxes/villager home in design/similar to tutorial houses/and/or have a-frame roofs or the current trend of "Tent homes". Whilst there is nothing fundamentally wrong with those, I just don't like doing what "Everyone else does" like draining an ocean monument or a generic white/gray/spruce plank modern build.
I have started a new 1.15 world, even though I have no interests in bees or honey blocks, and it's on a bit of an island and I sit here mining whilst I think about what home I want to build..

I am not a builder by any means but I've always built my main bases right at spawn, and don't go much more than 100 blocks or so away from spawn until I search for a stronghold, with virtually all of my exploration occurring while caving during the end-game. Because of this, I've chosen many of the seeds that I used so they have a plains biome at spawn, and even made a last-minute change to a mod to switch biomes around so the seed I chose had a plains at spawn (I mainly choose seeds to have plenty of land around spawn, AMIDST doesn't work with modded biome generation).
Here is are renderings of my current world before and after building my base; you can see where I leveled out a plains biome at the center, with the world spawn point being near the middle. Note that the first rendering shows the entire world; I'd stayed within the plains biome I spawned in, while the second is centered around the world spawn point (the highest part of my base is over it so respawning there could be awkward):
Similarly, these are from several other worlds, all centered on the world spawn point:
World1 (my first world, from a random seed. Spawn is near the northeastern corner of my base):
TripleHeightTerrain:
TMCWv3 (I built my base right over spawn):
TMCWv4 (spawn is in a small technical plains biome within another biome; this version of TMCW adds them to many biomes so there is a good chance of one at spawn. I built my starting shelter pretty much right over spawn, with my main base placed to the north):
I've only played in 1 MC world. I joined when my daughter asked me to play with her in a new world. We ventured far enough from the mountain spawn point to find a plain biome and started building there. There is nothing exceptional about the terrain, but I like it quite a lot.
My kids like to create a world, mess around with it for a short while - and then start a new one. I like to fully invest in one world and try to make it into something nice. I have a hard time imagining starting over again.
I grab spawn cords and then venture out to find an awesome spot to build, sometimes this takes a lot time and several hidey holes, but once I found a spot, I start building, after a bit I'll head back to spawn and start planning/building a starter town.
If conditions are favorable and attractive I might setup a base at spawn but that is rare. Most often I only spend a few nights in a temporary base at spawn while gathering together basic survival necessities. Then I'm off to explore. I may explore many maps before I find a location interesting enough to inspire a 'permanent' build.
I only build at or near spawn if the surroundings inspire me. I do always start the game with a bonus chest only to make a little shrine around it at spawn to commemorate my arrival in the world.
Not exactly a builder here but there are certain advantages to building at spawn. First of all, IIRC a radius of 5 chunks around spawn are kept always loaded so automated systems can be kept running even while on long mining sessions or explorations. Secondly, if your bed gets destroyed and you die you won't be too far from home. And finally third, if you ever invite some friends to your world the first thing they will probably see will be your awesome base.
I don't build much but I usually get a base up and running right at spawn so I can start mining as quickly as possible. In Survival, I basically just grind resources until I feel comfortable reaching the End, and once that's all taken care of I start to expand my base a bit and makes things more aesthetically pleasing.

There is something to be said (From personal experience) in investing in one world and sticking with it.

I generally use software like Amidst to find a biome I like near spawn and then go to that biome to build.

So what about you? Build at spawn or adventure?

Why do I still play in 1.6.4?

Spawn area chunks are always loaded, so I tend to base my farms there.
I generally also make a small starter base there as well, typically cut into a mountain.
Later, if I see some scenic area, I might build something there.
I usually adventure out to find a place to a base. Usually close to spawn, but not in it. Usually on border of a mountain biome, so I can mine easily.
