Hey so I'm a builder on a non released server and I was just given a huge assignment. I was assigned to build a big arena. Like really big. No bigger than what your thinking. I measured it with world edit and the perimeter the owner game me was 403x245. It has to have a forest and an open feild and be completely surrounded by over 100 block tall snowy mountains... and I'm doing this by myself.
Yes this is a huge problem as it could take me weeks to months and I'm still in school so its not like i can work full time on it. But even when I am done with It I'm just getting some compliments and then its over. I have heard that some servers pay their builders for big projects like this But i wouldn't call myself an average or professional builder. I would more say I'm the middle of average and professional but a little bit tilted towards professional and I never really thought of building as an actual job and more as a hobby.
I don't mean to sound greedy when I say this but I think I should be accommodated for all the work I'm doing. Its a big project and I'm only one person so i see it as fair. What do you guys think though. If I should, what would be a reasonable amount and how should I address the owner about it.
As someone who has zero experience with collaborating on building a world on some server, I haven’t any idea about the money-making potential of such a server or the ability of the owner to pay people working on it. But common sense dictates that you shouldn’t commit to a job that would negatively affect your schoolwork or be burdensome in any way. If I were you I would work on it at my own pace as long as it provides enjoyment. If the server owner complained that it it is going too slowly, I would explain that real-life constraints prevented my spending more time on it, which is true.
I googled some build teams, and the prices for their builds range from $20 to over $250 (USD) depending on what they're building. Granted, these guys are professionals, and make really good structures, so maybe keep your technical ability in mind when coming up with pricing.
But as others are saying, you really should have thought this out beforehand. I don't think people are going to take kindly to you suddenly demanding money for the project you're working on.
It sounds like the amount of time the project will take versus how much time you have is a bigger issue than whether you're being paid for your time.
But either way, have a conversation with the world owner. Explain that your assignment is bigger than what you have time to handle. Either he can get you some help with that portion of the project, or scale it down to a more reasonable effort -- or discuss compensation if that's what you're really after.
Either work out a solution that is acceptable to both parties -- or step away from the project. You'll be miserable the way it's structured now.

Maybe it would have been better to strike a deal with him BEFORE you started building.
wack
ya probably but I haven't gotten much done yet
