I was going to build a simple sorting system in my 1.15 world, but if I need a separate chest for each separate item I want to sort, I would need too many chests and the system would stretch for miles.
Does anyone have suggestions on what items to restrict the sorting to? Is it worth doing at all?
There is a method of making a sorting system where each chest can hold different items you just have to put items in each slot. I remember seeing a video for this on youtube. by tango tek
And yes, I totally think sorting systems are worth it, especially if you're the type of person that manually organizes your chests. if you don't mind having chest upon chest of random stuff then no, not worth it.

Thank you for posting this solution. I watched the tutorial and built a single module following it, however it took me all evening and I was so exhausted by the end that I didn't finish the last step of adding an input chest/hopper unit, so I don't have proof that I did it all correctly.
Personally I would say they aren't worth it unless you make massive automatic farms that would provide you with more material than you can possibly sort manually. If you are just a typical player who doesn't have a mob grinder and get most resources manually, you probably aren't getting a diverse enough number of items and aren't getting them at a fast enough pace that you can't take 30 seconds to manually sort them.

I have sorting systems at my mob farms and other farms but I don't worry about it in my main storage area. Part off the reason is that I have so many resources (30+ shulker boxes of stone) that I would have to take up a much larger space to accommodate all my resources. The other night I spent less than 20 minutes sorting out 24 shulker boxes from various projects around my base. To me, that isn't a big deal since it would probably take much longer for a system to put all those items in their proper place and consolidate items as necessary. It is also much more involved if I want to rearrange the storage configuration with the manual system I currently have.
I love my sorting systems. I choose items based on the source. One sorts items that come up from my mine. My iron farm only sorts for iron and poppies. The XP/ mob grinder sorts for stackable drops and has a large overflow for non-stackable items.
I haven’t tried the sorting system in the video, but it looks interesting.

I have used this sorting system in basically every world I have ever created and every server. Other than the resources required, I find a sorting system an absolute must-have and once you have built one, it is really pretty easy to build one from memory after that. I hate manually sorting my items and I almost always have some farms hooked up to it as well.
Thanks for posting that sorting model but I find it completely hilarious that we still have to do a life-size Lincoln Logs version of what should have been included in the game systematically years ago. Anything that the player can do manually but which is not expressly intended for entertainment should be automated already in the game.
