Hey guys. Sorry if this has recently been asked or addressed, or is just a dumb question in general.
I've co-created a very large minecraft world with a lot of apartment buildings and towns with my friend over the span of 5 or so years on single player LAN-opened creative mode hosted via hamachi. It sounds stupid, but one of my hobbies is spending each night in a random different apartment across my world (all connected by train across several biomes) and of course building onto it. At night, I used to dim my rooms by simply placing a slab right above my fireplaces in whatever room I was in at the time, and I could still see the fire, but it would make the room really dim.
A few patches ago, my game patched and all of a sudden, putting a slab over the fire no longer dimmed the rooms I was in, and I now have to cover the fire with the slab completely and can now only see the smoke coming out of the slab, and instead of the room being dim it just makes the room dark, and I need to put redstone torches up to keep it somewhat visible. I was wondering if anyone had a potential fix so that I could once again see my fireplaces without it being so bright now!
Another thing, in the most recent patch put out, I can no longer see rain or snow through tinted window panes, unless it's clear glass. Huge bummer.
As a final question, I was wondering if anyone here knew of any servers they could share that I could explore on single player that have towns/lots of furnished living spaces! I seem to keep running into viruses on google searches. I also want to share my own server, but have no idea how. If anyone can help answer these array of questions, I would be grateful. Thanks

This is a result of the change to the Blaze rendering engine, which affects everything from particles to the shading applied to items in inventories and even to entities interacting with other entities (for example, grabbing an item in your inventory with the mouse and having the icon dim as you passed over other items). I sort of doubt there's anything you can do to change this, short of a relatively complicated mod that re-rewrites parts of the rendering engine.

This was due to the changes in hitboxes of partial blocks like slabs, stairs, and hoppers. The change remapped the hitboxes to be closer to the actual shape of the block, which has the side effect of letting light (and items) through those previously "filled in" areas (even though, visually, you could see right through them). You can perhaps experiment with trapdoors, but these in the past were considered transparent blocks that let light through and I don't know if this property was changed any in the rendering-engine update.
Thanks for the reply. I attempted to experiment with the trapdoors, but no luck. Anyone have any suggestions as to how I can make my fireplaces dimmer in single player?

If you’re using a campfire, use a shovel to douse it, then light it in the morning.
You can also change your lighting level in settings so you can see bettering the dark.
