hey, so i'm pretty new to this. my brother has Minecraft on his Nintendo switch and I recently got Minecraft for my laptop (java edition). is there any way I can play Minecraft with him? it was much easier to join the same world as him on my mobile device, but now I don't know/understand how to play Minecraft with him now. any help would be appreciated
Bedrock edition: the version of Minecraft that can install on mobile devices (ipads, phones, etc) and game consoles (switch, playstation, xbox), it can also be installed on laptops/desktops that use the Windows 10 OS
Java edition: can only be installed on laptops and desktops using the Windows desktop OSes (Win95, Win2k, Windows 7, Windows 8, and Windows 10), including Macs and *Nix computers that run an emulator (as far as I know [and I'm probably wrong on this], there are no native-supported versions for these platforms)
These are mutually-exclusive Minecraft versions, so you cannot connect to a Java edition world with Bedrock edition and vice versa. IF you wish to play together, you will either need to install the bedrock edition alongside your Java edition or you will need to get your brother a computer that the Java edition can install on.
Now, sounds like you already know how to join up using the Bedrock edition. If you want to go the Java route, there are two main ways to do so:
1)buy/rent a server or a realm (Realms are small private servers hosted by Mojang that are meant for small groups like families and friends to play together)
2)open your game to LAN (LAN, or Local Area Network, is a way for nearby computers to connect directly with each other).
