I have an arena and a Battle pit (to prepare for the fight of course.) What are some ideas to bring to my arena? It's gladiator style just a flat arena with a sand floor (to soak up blood).
Perhaps some vendors stocked with random vegetables that the fans can chuck at the gladiators. Maybe shops for team/champion merch like specially-made banners, dyed armor, renamed weapons and armor of random quality and enchants, etc.
For the battlefield, scattered trapdoors and platforms that could be levered up and down allowed for beasts to be introduced to the fight. Sometimes they uncovered pits full of spikes or other hazards.
There was also a large chamber for large and/or dangerous beasts with a massive gate/door into the arena.
The gladiators had their own staging area, usually opposite the beast gate that they waited in until announced. There wasn't much here, since all they would be doing is waiting for the doors to open.
Below the arena floor was where the beast pens, armory, gladiator barracks, and charnel house (the place they kept the dead and dying) were.
Some arenas, such as the Roman Colosseum, had aqueducts that allowed the Emperor to flood the arena floor to stage mock naval battles. Being that gladiatorial events were the premier pro-sports venues of the time, lots of attention was paid to "spectacle" so they weren't always used just to punish traitors, criminals, and dangerous influences.
The stands had a section specifically for the Emperor (or the local ruler), and this individual would be the deciding factor for "approval" (the winner of the fight lived) or "disapproval" (the winner was killed, or rarely made to continue fighting until eventually he lost). Beyond that, they were pretty much the same, no VIP boxes or special hangouts.
