Just wanted to hear some opinions on the topics. Here's the example. SMP server caught player x-ray hacking. Now obviously this can be a big issue and mess up economy since it's diamond based. What should punishment be. 3days,a week, a month or perm ban. I would love to hear your thoughts on this server owners admins mods and regular players. Thanks for your input.
The only online server I ever played on has very strict rules that new players must read. Cheaters and griefers are perma-banned. Since the punishment is known by all players in advance it is fair. On a server where the rules aren‘t that clear, a more forgiving punishment might be more appropriate.
Anyway back on topic - on the server I'm a moderator on, we have a few 'guidelines' but mainly it boils down to:-
- If it is very obvious that the player is using hacks - Xray, Kill-aura, Fly etc then it's a permban no matter what & no begging to be allowed to come back will be accepted.. even the usual 'but it was my brother who used my account that did it', or 'I didn't know I had hacks on' don't cut it
- If its obtaining a player trust & then griefing that players claim (we have claim protection plugin) - Then it's a tempban of 1wk for first offence, then 2wks for 2nd offence & then 1mth then Permban
We generally consider 1st offence as a 'Player didn't know/didn't read rules', 2nd offence as 'Player forgot', 3rd offence as 'Maybe player forgot (again)' & 4th offence is 'That player must know by now & they're trying it on'
Sometime we also 'accumulate' offences (depending on the moderator who's dealing with a player), so if a player steals from a Pvp then griefs a claim in one play session then we'd consider it as 2 offences & give them a 2wk ban straight away - especially if they are warned after the first offence by a mamber of staff
- If its stealing from another player (either from claim/PvP or whatever) - The thief is approached & ask to return items/warned it's against our rules UNLESS other player accept 'winner takes all'.. if not then Items are taken from thief inventory & then banned the same way as if griefing.
Sometimes players don't claim fully & tend to have chests just outside their claim & some other player may find it & takes stuff from it
- We would usually ask the thieving player to return the stuff if it is obvious that the chest was meant to be part of the other players claim & the playe just forgot to expand their claim.
If the thief does return the stuff then they just get a 'slap on the hand' & no ban is applied.
If they don't within a time limit - then the usual theiving ban rules apply
Erm - What ?? Maybe posted in wrong forum.. also that link could be considered Spam/Advertising

If you suspect something is spam, just report it and don't reply to it. Leaving a quoted reply just leaves a spam link that others can still click on after the spam has been dealt with.
The servers I've been on have perm-banned hackers immediately. The rules about no cheating were spelled out when joining the servers and yet there's still always some that feel they need to cheat.
At the server i've played to most time vinalla minecraft without mods it was quite fair and easy
if you've been caught the first time it was 3 days ban, second time 2 weeks and third time permanent ban
also they have not stacked the ban-times if it were different complains
For example if a user was caught cheating and got 3 days and 2 weeks later he had griefed others it was 3 days again as it was another case
also everything was forgiven after 3 months so if you'd have used xray and caught got 3 days and you'd get caught 6 months later doing the same you'll get 3 days again instead of 2 weeks
I kinda liked it as it was really fair and misstakes will be forgiven
For serious cases like X-ray, permaban for sure. There are some clientside tweaks that I wouldn't consider hacks though.
Purely cosmetic mods like shaders or Fancy Block Particles are fine. Some more useful mods like Inventory Tweaks or a minimap are fine for survival/creative servers, but not for PvP. These should be cleared with staff.

You guys I really appreciate the conversation. I have asked quite a few folks and there are two sides. Perm ban the first time. We all know the rules and typically the consequences. Or the two or three chances people make mistakes type. Really appreciate all your help.
Hacking, especially xraying, is completely unacceptable. Most servers I've played on this is a permanent ban, no-strikes and you're out scenario. There is no one who doesn't know this isn't alright. It doesn't even need to be in the rules.

I agree that there are really some obvious things you should not have to tell people. No hacking X-Ray Duping Greifing Stealing really are kind of obvious things you should not have to tell people.

This is true a fair punishment if everyone knows what to expect. This is true good point.

Well if i were a hacker, and all i had to risk from hacking was a temporary ban, i wouldnt be scared of hacking a few times

Definitely isnt a mistake after the first time
Yah there were a few cases where some just played nicely but got caught using xray would have been really sad if they'd have been permbanned
