Basically you cant move due to the extreme lag from it. I was told to post it here and ow I have. If you can help in any way I would very much appreciate it and if i can ever repay you let me know.
If it can't be fixed It's alright, I'll start again. I'd RATHER not but oh well!
Sorry if i haven't posted enough info or anything. Just tell me what I did wrong if I did anything wrong. I havent slept in about 2 days so im a little out of it!
Thanks again!
I wasn't able to isolate exactly what the problem was, but I fixed it anyway with my typical approach of 'delete everything'. much of the surrounding terrain was deleted and regenerated, and I did my best to avoid hitting stuff but I accidentally clipped off the corner of that big stone thing. I fixed it as best I could with mcedit.
I don't think I broke anything else, and the world is now much more playable. The surrounding terrain which was deleted will regenerate normally when you go close to it.
Oh wow. First thing I said. Thank you so much man! SOOOOOO MUCH!

In this thread I explain what the problem is, and I also "partially fixed it" BUT that fix only makes the error not happen all the time. The error still happens from time to time, freezing my computer, and restarting my computer completely. Now once the computer restarts, the error no longer comes but I am very sure it must be related to the conversion of the map since I only get the error with this map. I can post a save where the error still appears everytime the world is launched in a server.
I read your thread, and I'm not sure what problems you are still having and which ones are fixed. could you outline it for me? I did read that you replaced level.dat. In general, you should not do that. Your first move should always be to restore the metadata backup (level.dat_old) and see if that works. If that fails, your only hope is that you have a level.dat from an older backup on hand (which you can substitute in)
The null pointer exception is in fact caused by corruption of the level.dat file. If you try to load it in single player, that world would not show up in the list because level.dat is broken (ssp checks whether a world exists by trying to read level.dat)
I haven't downloaded your world yet, but I am concerned that you may not have enough left to fix it.
If you upload the following, I can probably fix it:
-a copy of the world as soon as it stopped working and before you replaced any files
-a backup of the world from any time in the past
Im on my phone right now so when I get to my laptop ill give more details. :smile.gif: I am sorry, I didn't mean to seem like I was the only thing you had to do. Just found
*Sigh* Sorry for the cut off message. I was using the browser on my android and that didn't go so well. Also, what I meant to say was sorry for looking like I was impatient. I was just shocked that such a helpful thread was already not busy with people asking for help.

Okay, to be specific I used to get the null pointer exception nonestop. This is a save of that world.
Insert link here(Save where the problem first appear, recurrent)
It has a recurrent problem when I try to load the world on the server. It keeps getting the problem over and over and over again. No files have been replaced. The world got converted to 1.3 and that is what it gave me. I use mcmap so that is why there is a biome folder there.
To THAT map I did what I said I did in my thread. At first, I loaded the level.dat_old and it still gave me the error. So I decided to try different things until what I did worked. At first, It didn't load the items everyone was carrying when the null exception appeared but everything done to the map was safe. I got the items to appear and used MCedit to changed the spawn since that was also changed every time the world would fail to load. It worked fine for a bit but now from time to time the error comes, restarts the computer of the hoster and I got to changed the spawn with MCedit. We get the error like 2 times per day and its annoying.
Note: Since I am not the hoster of the server, he didn't make a backup prior converting it to 1.3 so that is why the closest save I have to the "broken one" is 10 days before.
This is a save beta 1.2 before the 1.3 update broke it.
Insert link here (Save before the problem happened, 10 days before, beta 1.2)
I have many past saves but this one is the closest to the broken one. This save is Beta 1.2
Now this is the LAST back up I have made. After many null exceptions, and with the most current changes to the map.
What server are you guys using? There are some issues with minecarts that aren't resolved yet (I don't think). Is there a minecart system somewhere doing evil things?
If you don't have a backup of before the issue started, I might not be able to completely fix it. I can probably make it usable, but terrain won't match up properly if you explore new chunks.
I will see what I can do. I will also try to start work on that utility I mentioned thinking about a few pages ago, which will have the ability to automatically prune out corrupted chunks and fix corrupt entities, as well as a few other sanity checks that commonly afflict saves.

We are running a vanilla server so we are using the default one. Currently we have a minecart system that the hosted insisted he wanted to make. Its pretty long actually, that could be the problem?? @_@ Dang it. I have a save that is 10 days back atleast... we lose stuff but I guess nothing can be helped.

You can remove the minecarts, just open the map in single player and find and remove the minecarts. It might be worth a shot if you know where they all are. you could also do it with mcedit and remove entities. make sure you only remove entities from chunks with track. This way is faster, but much more risky. Chests are entities, and if you delete them, the contents of the chest is cleared.
I've been having some problems on my SMP server lately and just wanted to post here to see if they are resolvable.
So basically, the server I'm hosting is on its third save because the previous two both got corrupted when my power went out, shutting down the server abruptly. The first is pre - 1.3, and I did some fiddling so it now appears to also contain a separate 1.3 - style world, apparently generated on a completely different seed. The second one is post - 1.3 and I haven't done any fiddling with it. Both do the same thing when loaded with the server, which is cause it to display some error about not being able to load files or something - I'll post the exact error along with the saves later if you think you can fix it.
Thanks a bundle, and the people who play on my server will thank you too :biggrin.gif:
So the solution is to not use minecarts in multiplayer?? Just wondering.
Pretty much, yeah

I'll take a look at it. Can't promise anything though, but I can probably make save 1 convert properly. I have no clue what's wrong with save 2, but it might be related to the problems of save 1. In any case, you can possibly prevent these problems in the future by performing a metadata backup of your server save. In my experience, saves corrupted by power failure are almost always have damaged metadata (most or all of the chunks are fine), and restoring a metadata backup will usually fix that.
Thanks then Apocalypse. The server seems to be more stable with the fix I gave it. No more error on the hoster's computer. It turned out to be that his computer overheating was also a factor to take. We didn't remove the minecarts and no problems so far. Thanks.
firstworld.zip is the first world I mentioned, the one I fiddled with. I think it has both a newly generated MCregion world and the old pre-1.3 world. secondworld.zip is the unmodified one.
Just to be a bit more specific, when I say "fiddling" I mean I deleted a few of the most recently modified chunks to see if it would work, and instead of loading and converting the map it just generated a new one, so I restored the chunks I deleted (recycle bin ftw)
I hope someone can help me - distracted by my son's yammering, I accidently deleted my saves folder while trying to install some mods. Anyway, I immediately undeleted my saves folder and hopefully recovered enough to rebuild. However, my undelete program (Recuva) seems to have renamed all the data files, and I'm not sure what belongs where and what it should be called. I have a readable level.dat, so I can get the seed etc., but I would really like to recover the data if possible (I've put several months work into this world!).
If anyone thinks they can help me, please let me know and I can provide more details / files.

Yeah, that'd do it too. My laptop overhears something terrible when playing MC. Doesn't usually crash, but slows down to about 10spf. that's spf, not fps.

this sounds serious. Zip everything and upload it, I will have to do damage assessment to figure out whether or not anything is salvagable. Never seen this happen before, so I don't know, but I'll give it a shot.

Have you been making frequent backups?
Yeah - but stupidly, I also had them in my saves folder...dur! I kept meaning to move them to my removable hard drive, but never got around to it. If I can get ZileFile to work...I'll see about an upload.
This is some of what I undeleted. World4_5 is my most recent backup in the old file format. World4 is the 'up to date' save and appears to contain bits of old style files and the new MCR (McRegion) files. I don't know if you can mix and match (the 4_5 level.dat is readable).
Hello, I'm having a problem with one of my save files.
Whenever I enter a certain chunk my character seems to be freezing.
I have tried removing blocks under me, but my character just keeps floating in mid-air.
Dropped items keep floating.
Also, mobs also seem to have this problem too.
I don't know how long this has been around since I never go to that part of the map, but i hope you can help me fix it.
It's a late Infdev save: http://www.mediafire.com/?ink15q3irfc9ec5
