I just simply had a question. For instance, if I wanted a nether portal to be at the nether fortress (since my original spawn portal is about 500 blocks away) how would I go about doing that? Just to clarify, I want to build a nether portal in the nether fortress, but also have the portal it links to at my home base. I just dont know how I would go about doing that. Im aware of the whole 8/1 thing, but im not sure if this helps my case. I was thinking if I built a portal at the nether fortress and lit it, it would obviously bring me back to the overworld; however, I believe that the new overworld portal is randomly generated, and it has a great possibility of being far from my home base. Any help and assistance with this will be greatly appreciated!!
Maybe in the nether you could try getting rid of the portal taking you back. Then build a new one. I don't know if it would work, but you could give it a try!
Yes, it works. However, when i created multiple portals in the nether, my theory was correct about how the newly generated overworld portal spawns in a new location. Its very inconsistent though and i still dont completely understand it

It isn't really all that hard, if you build a portal in the Nether 500 blocks from the portal that connects to your home base in the Overworld the new Overworld portal it creates when you use it will be approximately 4000 blocks from your home base (because of the 1:8 thing).
You can get it to connect to a portal 128 blocks closer to home (3872 blocks away) but no closer.
You can build a portal in the Overworld that is 1024 blocks closer to home (2976 blocks away) and get it to connect to the portal in the fortress but it won't work in the other direction. So it's not really worth messing around with. Better to build a minecart track under the bedrock ceiling the 500 blocks to the fortress.

When you enter a portal the game translates the coordinates, divides X and Z by 8 if you are going from the Overworld to the Nether, multiplies by 8 when going back to the Overworld.
Then it starts at the recalculated destination coordinates and looks 128 blocks N/S/E and W to see if it can find any lit portals, if it does it takes you to the closest (except that it won't take you above the bedrock ceiling in the Nether), if it doesn't it makes a new portal as close to the destination coordinates as it can.
This means that a portal in the Overworld can be 1024 (128X8) blocks away from the recalculated coordinates of a Nether portal and still get you there. But a portal in the Nether can only be 16 (128/8) blocks away from the recalculated coordinates of an Overworld portal to take you there.

Just testing.
