Does anyone know why my perfectly good stack-able design pumpkin farm no longer produces fruit on any other layer than the top? Do the pumpkins now need direct access to sunlight?
yes. The design is layers of blocks as follows (I can't send pics, as I am on the work computer):
ring of 10 blocks with a 1x2 hole in the middle. water flows to the bottom inside those 2 blocks, and hoppers collect the drops at the bottom. the 2 center blocks at the ends of the ring hold up the next layer, and also force the pumpkin plants to grow fruit in the middle blocks (yes, dirt)
The four corners have one plant each, and the pumpkins grow on both sides next to the water. there are pistons behind those to push the pumpkins off.
If I remember correctly, it looks likes this:
X=any block / P = piston / T = tilled earth / D = dirt/ S=space / W = water / L = ladder
X=any block / P = piston / T = tilled earth / D = dirt/ S=space / W = water / L = ladder
Business layer:
S X X X X S
X T D D T X
S X WW X L
X T D D T X
S X X X X S
Alternate layer:
X S P P S X
S S S S S S
S X WW X L
S S S S S S
X S P P S X
until further notice since the pistons would be behind the pumpkins, not the dirt.
Looks alright to me, seems there would be plenty of light if the stack is in a well lit area, you could always stick some torches next to the plants to be sure.

I grow all of my pumpkins indoors so sky light is not your problem, have you accidentally broken or moved something important?
Do they have enough light and is the dirt hydrated?
You do have dirt where the pumpkins go don't you?
Screenshots might help.
Just testing.

I'm going to presume you mean:

What version are you in?
Just testing.
I built a 5 layer stack in 1.12.2, so far I've got 4 pumpkins, all on the bottom 2 layers.

Though I don't have any redstone in it which might affect things.

Except that none of the redstone components are likely to block light (not even pistons).
Just testing.
