I Hate to see the Minecraft community slowly disappear. What are some major changes and additions you think would give Minecraft new life?
I have been a Minecrafter even before the trading update had been implemented and perhaps have been around since 1.2.5. I hate seeing the game die out like this and I think if we can get the attention of the devs through this post we can revive Minecraft. LONG LIVE MINECRAFT.
The community isn't disappearing, it is just more spread out. The forums are just less active because, in part, the unnecessary merge with Twitch and its forced new account.
well, here's a few things:
1. add more customization to the block/item model formats - something akin to .obj would be VERY welcome
2. add a gamerule or world setting to restore pre-1.9 attacking
3. start implementing more community suggestions
4. actually optimize - remove BlockPos and GlStateManager for starters.
Not ones to be outdone, Mojang and Microsoft have revealed that sales of Minecraft have reached a staggering 144 million across all platforms, with a hugely impressive retention of 74 million active monthly players.
The news comes just weeks after PUBG eclipsed the total PC sales of Minecraft. Despite this, Minecraft’s success still shows no signs of slowing. The last official figure we heard was 122 million copies sold as of February 2017, meaning an average of 2 million copies of Minecraft sold every month. This compares to 1.7 million per month the prior year. Far from Minecraft’s success waning, there's actually a growth in the rate of sales.
As somebody else mentioned, the forums are all but dead (I once calculated the rate of posts/thread creation and found a decline of something like 95% or more since it peaked in 2012-2013) but that is because everybody is going to places like Reddit, which has seen a big boom in subscribers (around a third more since I signed up there late last year due to a lack of activity here; I've been more active over there for months and have recognized/been recognized by many former forum members), as well as far more active users at any one time (right now there are close to 2,000 users on the Minecraft subreddit but a mere 71 on the forums, despite the forums having 8 times the members. Another 1,500 are active at the Feed The Beast (modded Minecraft) subreddit, which has only 52,000 subscribers).
Oddly, enough, the forums still continue to gain quite a lot of members (36,000 so far this year according to the Internet Archive), but it seems like virtually none of them want to interact, defeating the entire point of signing up on a forum (or most of them are fake accounts).
2. add a gamerule or world setting to restore pre-1.9 attacking
No no, he said another golden age. Meaning, one that's not the same as the previous and isn't trying to regress to a previous update people are nostalgic for.
I know TheMasterCaver has already pretty much ended this discussion with the statistics of Minecraft purchases, but I feel like I add my own two cents:
I think a lot of people assume that the game is dying because it's not as commonly talked about as it was in say... 2013. About that time I myself was getting really interested in this game, and it was the big thing on Youtube and on the internet in general. (At the time, for me, I saw some Minecraft-related stuff on Scratch.) This was about the time I learned about indie games like World of Goo and Garry's Mod.
Minecraft was in the spotlight. I would get in social circles and it would come up in conversation. I think this is the kind of popularity that people really talk about when they say the game is "dying."
Nowadays I find that Mario Odyssey, Breath of the Wild, Sonic Forces/Mania and other new games coming up in conversation with the same people. (mostly the first two) When you think about it, this makes sense. If you've ever watched MatPat's video on how Youtube helped to make Minecraft Let's Plays popular by changing their formula for suggesting videos, you know that 2013 is also the time of the formula change. In a way, Minecraft became "new" during this time.
Besides a lot of negative things like some kind of scandal or financial loss, I really don't think there is anything that can really inject Minecraft back into conversation. It's had it's turn in the spotlight, and it's time to let new things become popular. As for its actual sales, the game is growing as TheMasterCaver said, and we don't really need a conversational level of popularity for anything.
If you want to have conversations about Minecraft, you can always enjoy the company of the people on the Minecraft Forum or create a Discord group to talk about the game.

An update I recommend is a shipbuilding update such as adding the ability to make ships, after all, where do shipwrecks come from if there are no ships that sink?

Seriously? Another thread like this? Do you even know how many threads like this has been made? Yea, not going bother with it too. Anyway, the game isn't dying, in fact, its growing and it's not going to stop growing anytime soon.
Well, don't confuse "YT'ers move on to other things over time" and "YT'ers are upset with YT jerking their chain" with "Minecraft is deady-dead-dead-dead", because it isn't.
If you want to discuss a *specific* kind of update you'd like to see, that is a separate issue from "R.I.P. Minecraft." If you'd like Shipbuilding and Vehicles, I would strongly recommend you check out the Spigot server and plugins, or Forge and mods with forge. Vehicles do not appear to be a project Mojang wants to develop at this time, as much as I agree with you and I would love to see them. There are already many internal code issues they are trying to resolve, and making vehicles within Vanilla introduces new problems Mojang wouldn't want to deal with at this time.
Oh, you'd rather stick with Vanilla, but you want ships anyway? Here!
I know these substitutions are not *quite* what you are looking for, but they are options to explore. Better yet, the more people make use of some kind of vehicle among those mentioned, the more Mojang will need to take a look at that for Vanilla.
So I'd advise against hitching, "I want sea ships" to "Minecraft is dying!" They are two separate, unconnected issues. Both can be discussed as separate message threads, but "you can have ships now if you want" and "Minecraft isn't dying" are the very short answers to both.
I think Mojang needs to improve the biomes and structures, and that they are too focused on new mobs. That's why I was so happy about the update aquatic, because it improved the most ugly biome in the game. If they improved all the biomes, and took more risks, Minecraft could be an amazing place.
There is no reason not to try new things, because this is a game that is written in code, and anything can be removed or changed.
I heavily disagree with this. It is my understanding that a lot of the currently active players are just playing minigames, meaning the base game has gotten boring or uninteresting for many people. Many updates have also broken previous contraptions and game balance, so again, there is a lot of work to be done. I’m not saying Minecraft is dying (because it’s not) but it certainly has become less than what it should have become by now.

I don’t get why people are opposed to a gamerule for combat. Both systems are arguably lackluster, so why not let people choose between the two? It’s not like it’s impossible; the YouTuber Antvenom even had a mod made that does exactly this.

My avatar is a texture from a small block game I made in Python. It's not very good and it probably won't work if you install it.
I'm very alone in my Minecraft worlds as I don't have a very good internet connection to run a server. If you're like me, you might be interested in my Posse mod suggestion.
An extremely potential addition would be cubic chunks, that means 3d and underground biomes, giant caves, underground structures and exploration, the capability of add new mobs that only are generated at big depths, as well as new ores.
Floating biomes could be added at very high heights.
This also would benefit nether and end. Specially end, end islands should generate also occupying vertical space, and a very big range of structures could be added.
I know a lot of people want cubic chunks, but coming from a project with cubic chunks (COUGH Minetest COUGH) I find all the vertical space kinda boring and useless. To be fair, Minetest doesn't have any underground biomes, but I still think there really isn't much point to digging downwards forever.
As for the Nether and End being in the Vertical space, that raises some problems with day/night and skyboxes, doesn't it? And lore too...

I've actually tested this myself (in actual Survival worlds) by making the ground up to 128 layers deeper (effectively 3.5 times deeper between lava and sea level) and I much prefer near-vanilla ground depth (my current mod lowers lava level to y=4, giving 7 additional layers or 13% more room), and you can still have extremely large caves - the largest ones in my mod get up to 300 blocks across and more than a million blocks in volume, with around 5,500 torches used to light one up and over 15,000 resources collected over about 16 hours (which are much less than a single cave system in my "triple height terrain" world, though that mod basically just increased the generation of normal caves to match the increase in depth so there was far more area for a given volume with larger caves/ravines being less common, as is also the case in my current mod, where the type of cave shown below generates once every 16384 chunks and took 4 months of intensive caving to find; despite their size there is little evidence of them at the surface):
This is what MCEdit found in a 300x300 block area below sea level:
Despite its size this was the only clear surface evidence of what was underground:
Likewise, you can have underground biomes (if just extensions of the surface deep underground, it is possible to generate a second biome layer and use it below sea level though, or use different decorations):
Mobs can also already spawn according to the depth; bats only spawn below sea level, squid around sea level, and my own mod adds naturally spawning cave spiders and silverfish below sea level and giants above sea level (giants could spawn in larger caves though, I may add a check to see if the cave is large enough for them to move around easily).
Of course, it would be nice if they added features like the ones shown above (my mod has a lot more) - or at least a way to customize the underground (change at least the size/chance of cave systems and other structures; Superflat has even let you do the latter for 6 years); I see 1.7 as a major setback for a game called "Mine"craft (and early on "Cave Game"*).
*If you've ever thought that there were too many caves in the game then you should see what the first version was like:
My avatar is a texture from a small block game I made in Python. It's not very good and it probably won't work if you install it.

How did you make those maps? They look really useful, but all map things I ever found only work for the surface
I used Unmined (an older version which looks better underground and is easier to use IMO) and Minutor; the latter also makes it easy to support mods with custom biome/block packs, even overriding the vanilla ones (many of the biomes in my mod use IDs taken by different biomes in 1.7; likewise, only a few blocks like packed ice use the same IDs and/or variants; all the variants of ore you see are actually the same block ID as vanilla's stone-based ores. Most mappers will ignore unknown data values though, I did not update Minutor to show variants as different colors). You can also use MCEdit as a form of "spectator" mode without having to load the world in 1.8+ (which is not possible with a modded world).
What exactly do you mean by this? Do you want to remove LAN multiplayer? Why? I use LAN to play with siblings and friends that come over to my house so that I don't have to make my own server.
Once that's done remove all the combat and new entities from single player except the minimal amount that was in the original singleplayer!
Nintendo games have combat. Pacman has combat. I'm sure the most popular games involve some form of combat.
It's not leaving, and it's not going away. You can't remove the idea of combat from video gaming anymore than you can remove it from television. Not only that, but Combat is almost half of the current gameplay. It's not going to leave the game without Mojang making a major move.
This is about updates to restore Minecraft to a Golden Age, not a Pacifist Age or an SJW Age. Stop. Just stop. I get it, you served your country and IRL war is a very real evil. But hiding all combat from kids isn't going to fix that in any way, nor does anyone have an obligation to remove combat from video gaming because a minority of people find it "offensive".
If you want a game that doesn't involve combat, there are a plethora of other games that would fit your personal choices:
- Kerbal Space Program. (Unless you are object to rockets...?)
- SimCity
- Minetest (There are swords, sure, but no evil mobs unless you mod them in!)
- Um... Frozen Bubble? (I don't remember the non-open source version's name.)
- ...
- Tetris?
Those single players wanting combat can always play alone as a multi-player.
You seem to be very confused on what exactly multi-player is. Multiplayer means playing with other players. Not necessarily involving combat or anything else. Multiplayer still involves the exact same gameplay.
There was a reason Notch separated the two versions.
IMO we need his guidance back again! With absolute veto power!!!
Swords and mobs have been in the game since Indev, when Notch was still making the game. Heck, they've been in the game since Mojang was still called Mojang Specifications. (Swords were added in January of 2010, Mojang Specification changed their name into Mojang AB in October of 2010. Notch sold the company to Microsoft in 2014.)
Even if Notch wanted to remove the swords from the game, he would have to buy it back from Microsoft, and he would need to be willing to go back and develop Minecraft. He's said before that he does not want to make games that completely change the world, which is why he sold the game.

Why do I still play in 1.6.4?
Welp, I take back what I said... This looks amazing.

Separate single and multi-player once again!
Once that's done remove all the combat and new entities from single player except the minimal amount that was in the original singleplayer!
Those single players wanting combat can always play alone as a multi-player.
There was a reason Notch separated the two versions.
IMO we need his guidance back again! With absolute veto power!!!

- ...
- Tetris?
You seem to be very confused on what exactly multi-player is. Multiplayer means playing with other players. Not necessarily involving combat or anything else. Multiplayer still involves the exact same gameplay.
