By Fortnite. Why? I don't know. Maybe there is a reason that the game is gaining popularity so fast. Maybe it is more than a shooting game. But I have a feeling Minecraft's death isn't going to be natural...
Don't know about that - IIRC i read somewhere someone said similar thing when Roblox came out, but looking at the Google trends of both & you'll see Minecraft is still more popular than Roblox
Although you'll see they are getting closer to each other but IMHO the Spikes we see may be down to the Minecraft update during December & Roblox Xmas Event - so when Aqua Update comes out, we may see an increase in interest

Fair point... The update aquatic will be one of if not the biggest update to ever come to Minecraft.

Rather than looking at Google Trends, let's look at official sales and player count data:
The last official figure we heard was 122 million copies sold as of February 2017, meaning an average of 2 million copies of Minecraft sold every month. This compares to 1.7 million per month the prior year. Far from Minecraft’s success waning, there's actually a growth in the rate of sales.
This data says that Minecraft is still becoming more popular. Much more so - the number of active players has nearly doubled in only 1 1/2 years:
Mojang also announced today that Minecraft currently has 55 million monthly active players, an increase of 37.5 percent from the 40 million that Microsoft reported back in June.
Other games may show extreme spikes in popularity but none of them have lasted for anywhere near as long as Minecraft; remember Pokemon Go? Well...
Also, an interesting fact about people who play Minecraft - they tend to play many more different games than the average gamer, so people like myself or YouTubers who only play Minecraft are the exception, not the norm:
Minecraft gamers in the US are very active gamers. They played an average of 22 franchises in the previous 6 months, double the number of franchises played by the average American gamer.
Also, from the link above (a bit old but very likely still accurate given the latest sales/player count ratio):
In an interview, Mojang Chief Executive Carl Manneh, noted “Usually with games, you would start to expect a decline after the first year since launch. That’s never really happened for us.” Fresh Newzoo data shows that 36% of Minecraft gamers have been playing for more than 12 months.
You're assuming that people stop playing games when a better game of a different genre comes out. This isn't entirely true.
First off, not every person is a fan of the FPS genre of games, either because of an overprotective mom or a personal gameplay taste. Minecraft has a slower, less action packed form of gameplay that may require quick thinking occasionally, but not constantly. This is good for people who don't have the reflexes to shoot before they can be shot, but can enjoy building things with their own creativity and ideas.
Second off, even if Fortnite was another sandbox game, (I mean, it might be. I dunno, I don't really check game news that often...) Minecraft has a large advantage over all other sandbox games: It's the name brand. Minecraft compared to other sandbox games is like comparing Legos to cheap knockoff building blocks. You don't know if that sandbox game on the app store is going to be a quality game, but you know Minecraft is a quality game because it's the game everyone is trying to copy.
Third, people still play old games. You can find the old Dreamcast Sonic games, the HD Remastered Age of Empires games and more on Steam. Some people like me don't have powerful computers, but we can run Minecraft even if we only have 2 GB of RAM and a Core 2 Duo.
I got Terraria a long time ago while I still played Minecraft. Did buying the game stop me from playing Minecraft? No, actually. In fact, I don't play Terraria that often. (Partially because of my crappy computer, partially because the game doesn't have that much replay value once you've seen all the bosses IMO.)
So, no. I don't think Minecraft will be murdered by Fortnite, any more than it was murdered by Undertale, Terraria, or Portal.

Doesn't matter how big the update is if 80% of people play 1.8 still </3
Don't claim something you can't back up. You don't know "if 80% of people still play 1.8" Period.
Only claim something, if you can back your words. I won't be saying, that majority of Minecraft players would be playing newest version(s), but it's even more stupid to claim, that 80% of people are still playing 1.8.
As for Minecraft getting murdered by Fortnite, newsflash: It isn't. They are 2 totally different games, and even though both hava their building side, they still are completely different games.

In fact, the majority of players aren't even playing on the Java Edition, which has been a minority of all sales ever since 2012, and is the only edition to have the 1.9 combat (it is pretty obvious that is what is implied by a refusal to update past 1.8):
Yeah, a third of all servers are on the latest version - 1.12.2 - and over half are on 1.12.x - so much for "80% are still on 1.8.x" - and for singleplayer the percentage is likely much higher (there are many reasons why servers may be behind, like mods and plugins). Just one out of thousands of listed servers is on 1.6.x, so the fact that I still play in that version, and not only because of mods (which that one server most likely is) makes me truly unique. Likewise, most of the 1.7.10 servers are almost certainly modded given the (declining) popularity of mods for that version.
Also, the fact that Java has become such a minority of sales leads to the fact that many people specifically refer to this version when they say that Minecraft is dying but I do not see any indications that it is; it is still selling at more or less the same rate it has since the official release, if not earlier with close to 28 million copies sold so far (which again, a lot have been sold since 1.9 and anybody who bought the game since then never experienced the "old combat"). Part of the increase in the rate of overall sales is due to the game coming out on so many different platforms, and mobile games are simply the most popular these days.

I'm getting tired of these "Minecraft is dying" threads. They have become redundant, every comment keeps an endless circle going. The OP thinks Minecraft is dying because its old but has no evidence for it. People comment on why he's wrong. Then MasterCaver makes a superb post with great evidence showing that Minecraft is not dying, but only growing. I applaud you for continuously taking the time to reply to these threads with such determination.
It's gotten to a point now we could make a separate forum just with these "Minecraft is dying" threads if we wanted to. The suggestions forum has a rule in which any thread that is similar to another active thread is locked, as it's redundant. I think the same rule should apply here.

Right? I've inhabited the Team Fortress 2 forums for a while, and you have the same "TF2 is dying!!" threads with 0 substantial evidence and ten pages of commenters going "no it's not!!". I'd really appreciate if a rule were put in place to discourage such sensational threads unless they have actual evidence and a non-clickbait title.

This video bring up a good point on how the game is dying:
And that's, YET AGAIN, only opinion of one rather pathetic (small) YouTuber. The game is dead only after it doesn't get new content. And newsflash, the game is still getting new content.
And yet again, Microsoft is not adding, or removing anything from/to Minecraft, Mojang does, thus making "Microsoft killed Minecraft after buying it" total rubbish.
And there haven't been any update, that have "confused" me either.
The game is not dying, even though it isn't growing either.
In particular, the increase in active players suggests that many people are returning to the game - which Mojang has linked to new updates (specifically, Pocket Edition):
Mojang also announced today that Minecraft currently has 55 million monthly active players, an increase of 37.5 percent from the 40 million that Microsoft reported back in June. It’s possible that the recent release of version 1.0 of Minecraft’s Windows 10 Edition and Pocket Edition — the former is essentially a port of the latter — helped raise the number of monthly active users. Mojang released the Ender Update for those versions in mid-December, officially bringing them out of beta.
Regardless of other statistics, the number of active players is one of the most important indicators of the health of a game, and considering that Minecraft has pretty much reached full market penetration and become a household name any increase is impressive, much less the figures shown above.
Even with no new updates I can see Minecraft lasting for a very long time due to its nature (after all, I've basically been playing the same version for 5 years; I started in 1.5.1 and have never updated past 1.6.4 and do not use many of the features added in 1.6, which was widely derided as a useless update due to the fact it didn't add much; I do use my own mods even in "vanilla", where most of my gameplay is, but they are minor changes. Even TMCW is mainly more of a fun side project than adding features I want).
This is going to be a rant so prepare yourself this is going to be long. I watched a lot of great games die so If Minecraft goes dead there is going to be a lot of witnesses. I can only hope that EA games kills Minecraft so everyone can all realize how big a trash gaming company it is.
If you want to see a game that received the death nail go search for Command and Conquer 4 and look at some of its reviews. If you see anybody that has a good review for it, I'll let you know that they are lying to you, C&C4 its not even worth trying to play, its pure trash and so bad I regret buying it to this very day. I'll never get that twenty dollars back I could have spent that money way better.
I dont know but this might be just me but It's hard to even perceive minecraft ever dying, I mean its just so damn good unless the devs do something dumb like not add sharks to the game but even then we would still forgive them, but seriously the devs should add sharks to the game. I know your reading this devs give us the sharks NOW.
Now I always give microsoft a hard time when it comes to gaming I don't even have an Xbox never wanted one and I always thought the only reason microsoft ever enter the gaming industry was to indoctrinate kids. Turns out I was right. Now Age of Empires 2 was a great game.
I love Nintendo japan they have a lot of great and awesome game but most of them you cant play because nintendo north america is ran by a bunch of morons that have no clue to what the loyal fans want and the only thing that is keeping nintendo north america alive is pokomon and to be fair they are unholy unfair to us pokemon players. I still haven't got that damn email for the free legendary pokemon give away Nintendo North America promised and probably never will. I hate Nintendo North America with a Passion, to the point it makes me want to write hate mail to them but I'm better then that I got better things to do like play minecraft so I'll leave that to the other players.
Now I saved the best for last, Blizzard, they took a humongous number 2 on one of the biggest franchises gaming has to offer which is Starcraft. I don't even want to talk about it because its so bad. And its because of this fact here that it is so bad that I started playing minecraft. I was making games for Starcraft ok but because Blizzard neglected us Arcade players the game went to down to drain all because blizz was more concerned with the E-sports side of starcraft. It pissed so many of us off that by the time final 3rd expansion Lotv came out they deiced to do kill Terran off as if it wasn't already unplayable for us regulars players after all once you mastered playing Terran you got to go to the doctor because you thought practicing playing Terran for 12 hours a day was a good idea that you developed carpal tunnel syndrome in both your wrist and that boys and girls is how you kill a game and create an epidemic of losing a dedicated player base.
This video bring up a good point on how the game is dying:
Okay, let me analyze the video:
First, the guy talks about his nostalgia on how he likes to watch YouTubers play hunger games and now they're quitting. Which is, normal? What, you can't expect a YouTuber to play Minecraft continuously as their main content. It's normal that people got bored of the game eventually. And even if 1 or 2 or even 100 YouTubers supposedly quit Minecraft. There will still be more content creators. And hey, surprise surprise. YouTubers like Captain Sparklez still makes Minecraft content.
Next, he jump on to the Uuughh, Microsoft ruins Minecraft!!!!1!!1!1!!!! Bandwgon which is, not surprising. It would be near impossible to find rant video about how minecraft is dying without the mention of Microsoft and Notch leaving. He talks about how the game has "culture" in it, which i think is just based on nostalgia and has nothing to do with Microsoft purchase the company.
"Then they begin to release pointless update hat just adds more complexity into the game hidden as another feature to explore that made the game mundane"
> 1.8 added the first ever underground water dungeon with functional sponges
> 1.9 literally improve the combat system and expanding the barren end dimension, and we can all agree how Elytra is not a mundane feature.
> 1.10 is barren, but it's one update. And while it is barren, it improves structure block which creates big impact in mapmaking.
> 1.11 allow flight using elytra, and added what is known to be Minecraft version of Backpack
> 1.12 is VERY RICH of feature that i won't bother add any detail.
"But Microsoft did just that (implying the previous point)"
Right, cause microsoft want to buy Mojang so that their suggestion of the game will be implemented
"And i agree with that (Microsoft) is reducing the quality of the game and pushing people from playing the game"
No citation whatsoever.
"Minecraft could've just used more blocks and more things that made sense that could've just been modded in to the game. Instead they implemented feature which confuse new player"
Like what? The video doesn't provide new example. You want new blocks, 1.12 literally added 48 new blocks into the game. What does the video mean by confusing new player?
"Even though the game has been significantly worse for nearly a year or two"
No reasoning, no backup, no evidence, just a statement.A vague statement.
"The second thing that killed Minecraft was the pedophile standard (basically YouTuber scandal where the Youtuber was "exposed" to date underage kids"
Okay, this point is beyond ridiculous. Okay, so what? Someone exploits the game to do bad things. that doesn't mean every YouTuber is suddenly a pedophile. And, surprisingly if this scandal is that big. Why did i not know about this?
Next, he rambles about the Popularity of Minecraft among Youtubers and Twitch and how they're not in the top anymore which has nothing to do with how the game is "dying". Correlation is not caussation.
"Things that should've been added in like new realistic biome, new materials and ores, and many other things not added in"
Did he even check updates for Minecraft. Besides, we don't need realistic biome and new ores at the moment.
"Popular let's player have quit minecraft bla bla bla"
Has nothing to do with the game dying
"Minecraft would never reach that level of success again"
Considering that the sales keep growing, okay?
"Even Notch is somehow begin to redevelop the game again"
Ooooh, another Notch circlejerk even though ironically before he sold the company to Microsoft he's not the one who develops the game.
"Console edition gets less and less updates that are fall behind the java edition are instead getting stupid map packs, 4 mini games, and stupid costumes"
Microtransaction is optional
The one who design the skin are different team
The console edition still gets update
"Microsoft constantly monetizing the game more and more instead of instead of making the game better is killing the game"
>Implying that Microsoft takes place on the game development
"And we all can't save the game from it's demise"
Minecrat community is still active
The game is still sell well
The game isn't even died yet.
The guy who makes the video doesn't provide an actual evidence and his source is probably from some kid who hates 1.9 update and write their rant in some sort of blog post or forum.
I dont know but this might be just me but It's hard to even perceive minecraft ever dying, I mean its just so damn good unless the devs do something dumb like not add sharks to the game but even then we would still forgive them, but seriously the devs should add sharks to the game. I think the devs not adding sharks in the game is actually a good choice, and i'm saying this not because of the animal cruelty bullcrap.
Fist, Shark is a rather pale choice of hostile ocean mob. If they decide to make the shark hostile, what would it drop? Maybe shark fin and Shark teeth. And what could we make from Shark Fin? Shark Fin Soup. Why should we eat Shark Fin Soup if hunting animal and fishing is way easier. And Shark teeth is probably just another mid-tier weapon which can easily be outmatched with Iron Sword. If the Shark is neutral, then they would repeat the same mistake as adding polar bear, right? So, instead of Mojang thinking about an actual use for shark that is worthwhile, they can instead add other alternative animals, even fictional creature. And let's be real here, act of killing sharks in Minecraft will create scandals in the game and hurt their reputation.

This isn't a discussion about sharks, or Minecraft adding sharks to the game. Please limit this discussion to the topic of the thread.
This must be claim/thread/video number four-hundred and seventeen thousand, nine-hundred and sixty-two about Minecraft dying or being dead. That might be a slight exaggeration, but only slightly. That's how beyond ridiculously overstated that claim is despite being about as far opposite to that as you can possibly get! This game became not just a hugely popular game, but one of THE most popular games EVER that had (and still has, arguably if less than before) a HUGE cultural phenomenon in it's wake.
I only started watching that video, but that video in particular sounds to me like someone who found the game as a child/teenager and moved on many, many years later (edit: after finishing the video, they actually admit this!). Yes, like any game that even gets developed beyond release (which outside MMOs or other multi-player games that rely entirely on that to stay alive at all, isn't many), it ends up changing. I personally believe Minecraft should have done some things it didn't, and not have done some things it did, and my passion for the game is less than before, but... that's nowhere near the same as meaning it's dying, which is unfortunately the conclusion some people go for when they reach that point. I believe these claims are generally people trying to bring closure to something that they either moved on from, or don't like as much anymore, and may not even realize this is why they are setting out on a "the game is dying/dead" argument.
By Fortnite. Why? I don't know. Maybe there is a reason that the game is gaining popularity so fast. Maybe it is more than a shooting game. But I have a feeling Minecraft's death isn't going to be natural...

Fortnite is a FPS game. Sure, MC has PvP elements, but there's little enough overlap that I can safely say they aren't in the same genre.

I'd really appreciate if a rule were put in place to discourage such sensational threads unless they have actual evidence and a non-clickbait title.

Who says I say its dying? This is just a theory.
How exactly is it not growing?
June 2016: 107 million sales, 40 million active players
February 2017: 122 million sales, 55 million active players
December 2017/January 2018: 144 million sales, 74 million active players
In particular, the increase in active players suggests that many people are returning to the game - which Mojang has linked to new updates (specifically, Pocket Edition):
TheMasterCaver's First World - possibly the most caved-out world in Minecraft history - includes world download.
TheMasterCaver's World - my own version of Minecraft largely based on my views of how the game should have evolved since 1.6.4.
Why do I still play in 1.6.4?

Listen, as someone who has been playing this game since June, 2009 I can say it's not dying in anyway.
I felt the same about Garry's Mod, but when you play a game from 2005 - 2016 non stop, you tend to get burned out.
It's called; you are losing interest.
