I just found this thread and read through all the posts. Really interesting. I really like the frost dimension idea and picture a pretty flat icy tundra like place.
The frozen steam punk like city idea also seems kinda interesting but I am ify about the floating islands.

Now, take that picture and imagine it in Minecraft, with a few giant cliffs in the distance, and the faint outline of a steampunk tower dungeon on the horizon.
I'll see if I can get a concept terrain done this weekend. (I'll use the custom world presets.)
is it to late to suggest ideas for a dimension? I really don't want to read through 6 pages. may aswell throw the Idea out there
So inspired by the upcoming ARK: survival Evolved DLC "Aberration" what if we went with a "shattered" dimension? my idea is a world comprised of floating "orbs" that would float around randomly, yet act like any other piece of terrain (so you could build, breed animals, walk, ect on them) you would also be able to walk around them (think that old gravity mod, the one that allowed you to walk on walls and ceilings. Infact, if you need an example, if any of you have seen the movie "dragon hunters", think a world like we see in that movie, only darker, and with less dragons.
if we further wanted to improve on this, there could be different kinds of these "planetoids" ones comprised completely of lava or water, ones that are semi-sentient and go out of there way to absorb other planetoids, ones that are actually villager huts and are linked together with... something, and maybe even ones that can teleport to carious locations
sense this is a community suggestion, i'll let you give some input, but other ideas I came up with are
-some kind of shield that protects from planetary impacts
-being able to build "artificial Planetoids" AKA space stations and the means to move with them
-various biomes with different properties (for example, the quantum asteroid field from GotG vol. 2, or something in the vein of it) -abominations of mobs that roam the planetoids
so, what do you think?

I don't know how enjoyable this would be, though. That's the problem.
The goal with the suggestion isn't just to make something interesting and unique, but to also allow for a fun (and possibly challenging) new experience in the game. Though this idea (planetoids) is pretty cool-sounding, I don't think it would all that fun.
well, I was just trying to give the bare-bones idea. Planetoids would vary in size, shape, and material (for example, you may be able to find a large orb made entirely out of iron ore, or a small orb of diamond ore), Artificial planetoids (for lack of a better term, sense this isn't supposed to be space) could be designed from the ground up. theoretically you could create a replica of the death star, millennium falcon, U.S.S enterprise, ect. and I think it could be a really surreal experience to explore.

alright, so after a bit of tinkering in modded, I managed to use RFTools to create a rough mock-up of the shattered dimension *now let's see if I can get it to work*
alright so imagine that, but with a bit more variation in orbs, a few structures, and with forest and such actually growing on the orbs. actually hold on, i'm going to mock that up to

The shattered dimension sounds interesting, but I don't think it fits with the dimensions so far. They're about exploring new and vastly different worlds. This sounds more like a utility dimension for creating cool new things. It might make more sense as a world type or experimental mod.
While we're on the topic of dimensions, I just got an idea (very minor spoilers for Thor Ragnorak):
So how about a colorful, "garbage" dimension like Sakaar. It could grab some ideas for steampunk but still stand on it's own.

Exploration would be very prevalent in the shattered dimension, there would be structures, mobs, biomes, ect. Also, because the world's a bunch of Planetoids, exploration would take place in a 3 dimensional space, as opposed to the 2 dimensional exploration that just takes place on varying levels

How long are we going to wait until we end the poll and start brainstorming ideas for the selected dimension? By the way, at the moment there are more people who have voted for the Frost dimension than the Space dimension and the Shattered dimension combined.
I would also like to point out that the frost dimension was suggested on page 2, while the shattered dimension was suggested on page 6, though I suppose the space dimension was also was suggested early on, but still

I think it's only fair to give the shattered dimension some time, it's already mustered at least one vote besides genius_idiot, so it is gaining traction. That being said the poll has to eventually close, I think two days from now would be a good deadline.

We are like a week over our set day for picking the dimension, so can we agree that this will be the last time we move the deadline?
Well I'm, and by the looks of it most of us, Are Dolts, just because we settle on an idea doesn't mean that we have to toss the other ideas out the window, we put them on the shelf to come back to later! so, I say we refine the idea of a frost dimension to it's absolute limit and go from there.
Alright, i'd say there are 3 important things we should look at with a frost dimension
-Name
-Inpiration
-mechanics
alright, to cover the first to, I think we should base the dimension off of Jotunheim, the Norse home of the frost giants, and there are a few reasons for this, for starters, it would reference the Swedish origins of Minecraft, as back in the day Sweden was inhabited heavily by Vikings. Secondly it would make it fit even better as a counterpart to the nether which could be interpreted as Muspellheim, Norse world of fire. and thirdly, Norse mythology is just awesome, I think that the best way to describe it would be the "frat party" of Mythology, I mean, one on the most important goddeses, if not the most important, has a flying chariot pulled by house cats.
anyways, back on topic, assuming we do go with Jotunheim, I think I have a good idea of how to get there. My idea is that in an ice biome, with a MUCH greater chance in an ice spike biome, you can find a jotun or ice giant. it will be a mini-boss with 100 hp, and once you kill it it will drop a "rod of the Bifrost" if any of you have played with the mod Botania this may be familiar to you, basically, when you use the rod of the bifrost, it creates a bridge of transparent rainbow blocks in the direction that you're looking, and let's just say it has an arc for the sake of looks. but anyways, if you takethis rod of the bifrost and cast it towards the sky, it would keep going until it hit the build limit, at which point it would create a loading zone which would take you to a bifrost rainbow in Jotunheim
TL;DR fight a giant, get a wand that can make a rainbow, shoot one half of the rainbow into the sky, the other half brings you to the frost dimension

We should use Viking mythology for inspiration, but I don't think we should completely make it the frost Viking world. We can take ideas from Viking mythology, other sources, and our own original thoughts.
Fighting a giant for a rainbow bridge to the dimension would be cool and unique. Though it probably shouldn't be named "bifrost".
Very interesting. I think we should take design ideas from all sorts of things, as it would give the dimension a unique feel. For example, we could implement a therapod-style mob (yes, I really want that dinosaur) in, but other things don't have to be too related. As long as everything fits one overall theme, we can make the different features as unique as we want.
Regarding the giant/rainbow thing, I think we should definitely come up with a unique entrance to the dimension. If we are to use this method or a similar one, I think the giant should be found in very tall ice mountains. This would make for an adventurous setting of the dimension entrance. What would the giant look like, though? Obviously it shouldn't look like the normal giant, as it is just an enlarged zombie. Another possible entrance to the dimension could involve running down a frozen cave system (found in some frost-style biome) to a gateway of some sort. If we wanted to incorporate some space elements into the entrance of the dimension we could do that as well. How, I'm not sure, but this could definitely be interesting. I do definitely think that we should keep this dimension outside of the normal progression system, though, as having it come straight after the Nether of straight after the End would be boring and feel sort of forced. As mentioned before, an "optional" kind of dimension would add to the sandbox feel of the game, too.
I have an interesting concept to bring to the potential dungeons of this dimension. We've discussed making them steampunk-themed, and I'm all on board with that. What if we had the dangers in the dungeon be a mixture of mobs and traps? It would make it both unique and more interesting than other dungeons that are already in the game. For example, there could be some sort of evil mechanic that causes dispensers (or other machines) to fire projectiles at you.
One last thing: When making the dungeons, we should consider how we're going to make them "evil." I think there should be some sort of indication that the things in the dungeon are the bad guys, and not the player, as otherwise it's basically just the player intruding on their building, which is pretty mean of Steve to do.

But I do agree that calling it Jotunheim is a bit on the nose, just "frost dimension" seems lazy and i'm not good with names
