The rod would be interesting and I nice nod to norse mythos. How exactly would the rainbow bridge look? Is it more like a rainbow stair?
probably a 3 wide bridge made of alternating colors of a semi-transparent block.
So I see three options for implementing the Rod of the Bifrist:
1. The rod comes in dungeons, easiest to implement but makes getting to the Frist completely luck.
i went into more detail when i first suggested this, i suggested it dropping from a frost giant that spawns in a special cave/den/dungeon in an ice biome. although perhaps some kind of tracker would be good to implement. perhaps making it so that snow golums will move towards it when they're in an ice biome?
2. If we wanted a mob to access to the Frist, I think adding a whole new one just to get their is a bit too much. How about Ice Trolls (or Yetis, I prefer that name) that rarely spawn in the Overworld cold biomes? When defeated the Overworld Trolls drop the rod.
that could be interesting, but if this thing is going to be as hard as i think it is, the player needs a warning, we don't want some new player in iron armor stumbling across a troll, going to the biome completely by accident, and then getting dominated by the first hostile mob they see. that's why partly why i suggested a boss, it's not something you'd just stumble on, and making it difficult would be a good warning.
3. Or we could move the ice castles to the Overworld and have the Baron serve as a miniboss guarding the entrance. I imagine the baron looking somewhat like the ice king from adventure time, with the villager model.
ok, as the creator of the ice castle, i stand firm that it should spawn in the frist. But i'm all for an adventure time reference.
Side note, in Norse Mythology, Midgaurd(earth) was created from the flesh of Ymir, the first and largest of the frost Giants, so we make it so that instead of dying, the Jotun could turn to stone, and could then be resurrected, possibly with materials from either the end or frist. while making it rezzurectable with items not from the frist i admit is a bit odd, i feel it would do well to A. make the rod renewable, and B. allow players who didn't get there first to go to the frist.

A lot of people are making them today (just look at the last page lol). A glitch running around the forum, I think.
I agree that the 2nd option is the most seamless, Ice Castles can stay in the Frist. I didn't think about how dungeon loot would be limited on survival worlds, good point Zaffre.
Should rename the Ice Troll "Jotun"? The name has been growing on me.

Even though he dimension isn't progression based, it's INCREDABLY difficult, that's why we need a proper boss or miniboss guarding acsess. it serves as a warning, with the frost trolls, those would be, what? 3x stronger than a zombie? not saying much.
Should rename the Ice Troll "Jotun"? The name has been growing on me.nah, based on the model and texture, these are much more troll like then giant like. to my knowledge, the Jotun where giant huminoids, and i mean GIANT. i don't think calling the trolls "jotun" would do them justice. and i already suggested a role for Jotun, which no one acknowledged...

I saw your Jotun suggestion, should of replied but there was so much going on then. While I understand in norse mythology the Jotun were giants, I don't think giants translate well into the game. They seem too large, especially if they are going to be in hordes. Their sheer power would overshadow the Sorrowinds and Frores.
I know that trolls aren't really equals to how jotuns are in the legends, but if we aren't going to have giants (we will see what everyone else says) we could at least make a subdued version of them through the trolls.
there power is kinda the point, they're ment to be a "raid boss", as in there's no way in Helheim that a player is Soloing it, if you want to take 'em on, you need an army of Automatons, hired tundrans, and tamed glacipods/frores.

Larger land mobs like that simply wouldn't work in Minecraft as it is right now, at least not if they use the normal methods of walking. Plus, it would either be fast enough that it outruns the player, slow enough that's it's just an easy boss, or it would need some sort of ranged attack, which I suppose could be pretty simple to add. Actually, thinking about it, it could only spawn in really flat areas, and automatically go up 1-2 block ledges, perhaps break blocks otherwise.
The Jotun in the overworld or the jotun in the frist? in the overworld, the jotun would spawn in a special cave, while in the frist they would spawn in villages, and there would be ALOT of them

Sure, they might need a few tweaks, but giant mobs definitely work.
I went ahead and edited the Fristum texture. The left is the new, bluer version and the right is the old one. Which one is better?
Genius how big is the Jotun? Sorry if you said this before, I couldn't find the original idea. I fear the Jotun would be too similar to the Frost Trolls, we'd have to choose which ones we want to keep. Even if the Jotun are bigger they still fit the mold of big hulking monster that attacks you.

umm, i was thinking about 10-15 blocks high, with proportions relative to the player. but if you read my original suggestion (page 20 btw) you'll see that they're nothing like trolls, they spawn in villages, raise Mammoths as hogs (out dated) some use uprooted trees as clubs, some throw giant snowballs, and some keep glacipods/frores as wardogs/therapods.

I know that they spawn in villages and have unique behaviors, but they are still a bigger than the player mob. Maybe I'm the only person who has a problem with this but imo they both take up the space of "big creature with high health and damage".
10-15 blocks is really tall, especially if there's going to be multiple ones at the same time. 6 blocks might work. The villages must be huge to accommodate that size. And Jotuns keeping Frores as pets is kind of interesting but also diminishes the Frore's impact. Maybe a single Jotun could be a summonable boss, but even then we already have the boss slot taken up by the Engineer.

That's the trolls role? i thought they where strong cave dwellers that could stun.

Like Genius_Idiot said, that's the only giant mob and it doesn't work. That's why they were never actually added, they've finicky, have awful hitboxes, and don't really work from a gameplay perspective.

I think that the Jotuns should be wandering ice giants instead of village types- we already have the tiny Tundran hamlets/trade airships and (repopulated post-Engineer) abandoned villages, as well as the Gear itself, to lend a little civilization to the environment. People would be confused if they saw giant villages when they already saw normal-sized ones, and frankly the Jotun doesn't bring as much to the table of those two in terms of features and content, IMO.
The Jotun boss itself could mix elements from other Norse mythology. Perhaps it could summon Frores or something like that. Even if such a thing would also be difficult, I think that the Engineer and its machines would be hostile to it as well, so you could lead it to a Gear or at least some hostile Automatons or Juggernauts to try and bait them into fighting.

I don't know if we need a second boss though. Having half the game's bosses in an optional dimension feels counter intuitive. Would the Engineer be fought first or second? And how exactly can be get the Giant AI working? Genius said it would be comparable to the Ender Dragon in mass, but the Ender Dragon isn't a biped or 12 blocks tall.
The Gear serves as the anti-Frist, a land stricken of natural beauty. Sure the Frist is dangerous but its a balanced ecosystem. The Gear is what happens when someone tries to help themselves and in the process ruins the world from which they came. By destroying the Engineer the player saves the entire dimension from suffering a similar fate.
^Thats how you incorporate a political message Mojang. Not refusing to add things, but fitting the message around the gameplay.
Anyway I fear a boss from nature might contradict with that theme, the hostile mobs of the Frist might attack you but it's only because they need food to survive. A circle of life.
this is a late/post-game dimension right? so it makes to have tons of content. in addition, i feel like we shouldn't limit our dimension on the other dimension's short comings. the ether and end are relatively bland, and really need a face lift IMO, so we should just make this dimension as cool as possible, preferably without making the overworld irrelevant.

I don't think we need to worry about a "political message"; it's Mojang's game, so if they want to put in a political message, that's their business, and should be decided by them. It would be bad for their business if they incorporated any deeply political theme in the game, as the playerbase is very diverse and many people would get likely frustrated.
Side Note: I'm not talking about the specific theme presented here, but rather political themes in general. Don't take this as an insult to whatever political message was trying to be conveyed with the Gear.
Aside from that, though, you make a good point with there not needing to be a second boss or a giant mob like that, so I agree that we should stick with one boss.

We're not at all limiting the dimension by the other dimension's lack of content. Fishg was just making a point that half the bosses in the entire game shouldn't necessarily be in a single dimension, especially if that dimension is optional and completely separate from the normal game progression.
Oh, and this isn't really a late-game dimension; it's designed to be optional so that the player can choose when he or she wants to go the the dimension, as long as they don't have terrible gear (like leather armor and stone tools).
EDIT: Fishg, could I get the 16x16 texture of the fristum? Thanks!
