There are some people who mistakenly say branchmining while they actually mean stripmining.
I find it's more often the other way around. They think that since their mine is a long straight tunnel (a "strip" of dug-out stone, I guess), that they incorrectly have a strip-mine. IRL, "branch-mining" isn't even correct; what we call a branch-mine is in proper terminology a drift-mine (the tunnels being called drifts), but that's neither here nor there. No need to further muck up the issue with yet another term.

I must not fear. Fear is the mind-killer. I will face my fear. I will let it pass over me and through me, and when it has gone past I will turn the inner eye to see its path. Where the fear has gone there will be nothing. Only I will remain.
If everybody casually refers to it as stripmining then it's okay to call it stripmining
Is somebody says stripmining then its nearly guaranteed to be something like the picture Scientific_Guy posted
The problem is that not everybody means the same thing.
What Scientific_Guy posted is branchmining and I have seen stripmining claimed to be an alternative to branchmining.

I honestly don't understand how branchmining became stripmining in recent years for the newer generation. I'm assuming it has to do with popular youtubers making the term common by using it while doing branch mining. I'm usually pretty flexible, but when a term that is actually more confusing is starting to replace a perfectly good term I start resisting. Usually I refer people to the wiki when I see the term being used and point out that strip mining is NOT branch mining: http://minecraft.gamepedia.com/Tutorials/Mining
Basically looking for anything and everything while conserving your pick/shovel by not mining out the WHOLE ENTIRE area.
That is more like branch-mining; see all the little branches off the side of a main tunnel?
Now compare that to this, which is what I imagine people mean when they talk about "strip" mining; as you can see, there are long strips mined out, as opposed to short branches, hence the popular name:

See now that I can sort of see as being referred to as strip mining, except that is almost never the case when someone says strip mining on the forums, when you get details you find out all they are doing is branch mining. Besides I still think all you're doing is branch mining, you're only doing one side, because you always start and end on the same side where you enter your mine right? So that is your main tunnel and it doesn't matter how long they are, those are stil branches off that main tunnel. My mining looks similar to yours except I mine out in the other direction also.
I think the misunderstanding comes from the interpretation of 'Strip'. It can either represent a long narrow 'section' of something... the Vegas Strip. or it can be to 'remove in bulk', I.E., stripping out all contents. Once you can accept the duality of the word 'Strip', the whole argument becomes rather moot (imo). Granted, there is no such definition as Minecrafters use the word 'stripmining' in the discussion above. But this isn't a court brief, so I think we can dispense with the hard-line interpretations.

I prefer to adopt labels that don't cause confusion. Why wouldn't one assume the term 'stripmining' mirrors the real world equivalent? Why can't we all just use the long established term 'branch mining' to avoid that?
I know, can't change the world and all that, but I am in no way going to embrace that term.
I often see people talk about "Stripmining" in the forum but it's seldom clear exactly what they mean.
The Wiki mining tutorial agrees with the Real Life meaning, stripping the top layers off, flattening a mountain for instance.

But that doesn't seem to be the way it's used here.
I gather it's most often used for digging a long straight tunnel?
But where's the dividing line between stripminning and branchmining?
My branches are 500-1000 blocks long in either direction, what would you call that?
Just testing.

I tried it with terrible results. I gave my wife my glasses for a second, a creeper showed up and now my wife is pregnant.
Stupid 3D..
And I'll casually call the sky green, and if it catches on you'll start saying the sky is green right?

TheMasterCaver's World - my own version of Minecraft largely based on my views of how the game should have evolved since 1.6.4.
Why do I still play in 1.6.4?

Ok guys what I actually meant was this: (Strip mines in LRH Corner)
I just couldn't find a good strip mining pic.
Hope that clears it up.
