Still, you gotta remember that you have 5 or 6 chances to take him out before he can hit you again. And, if you are a pro who recognizes Thatt if he runs and runs he might be able to hit you often enough, yoy might decide to run instead, and then turn and take him out.
Hopefully though, you have armor. Armor is the biggest deciding factor a lot of the times.
And if he does mamange to take you out, you also have to remember that he could have done the same thing in 1.8 using a wooden sword, and probably faster than the guy in 1.9 with the axe.

Haha yeah I guess we really shouldn't bring stuff like armor into this situation.
Of course, I still think that a diamond sword player would win. But that is if you are considering that niehter of them miss, and you have perfect reaction time.
How about this: Tomorrow (Its late here), I will test with my friend the two weapons, switching out between us both, and see who wins most often? I actually really want to find the results of this now, because its a really interesting question. He is the bettwer PvPer, so I imagine I will be the one starting with the axe, and then we will switch up. He can probably video the whole thing as well, along wih different strategies and such, to see what gets the best reslts! If you can, you try and do this too, and we will see what happens!
Oooh I'm actually kinda excited about this experiemtn, cause I'm sure I can branch into lots of different types of strategies and desisgns, to see what works against what!

I like how it changes PvP but not how it affects PvE ( I don't think it is is bad, I just don't like it.). The nerf to armor and sharpness was needed but went too far, in my opinion. Can't wait til it comes to console since my computer is a potato with a keyboard.
The new combat was a bit iffy for me at first and it took a while to get used to. But after I did, I love it. The new combat is way more fun and interesting. After I played 1.9 for a while, I played a little on 1.8 and found the old combat boring and dull. There is nothing more satisfying than using swipe attack and slashing away at a horde of zombies. The shields finally nerfed creepers and rapid-fire skeletons, you can step near them to kill them without being ripped to smithereens now. Vanilla survival is finally interesting for me again.
It can feel like long time waiting to attack in the moment where your instinct is to spamclick. However, you eventually get into the rhythm, it starts to feel pretty much instant.

I am currently lurking more than I am posting. I haven't gone anywhere.
are you serious guys ? why do you like fast pvp man its very fast its unreal man this is not cool i like 1.9 combat because of reality you are hitting him like in real life an in real life axes is better than swords 1.8 is unreal fast combat fast kill slow combat is real that is my opinion 1.9 is better because they maked a combat real not fast block hit block hit man wtf
and yeah one thing in real life you can kill one human with one hit with axe the same as sword . i think they would have sword damages (4,5,6,7 etc) not like (7.8.9.9.10 etc) that would be more normal
OK, so me and my friend fought it out for a bit, He with the sword and me with the axe (because I'm the noob when it comes to actual PvP, compared to him ), and I didn't manage to kill him once in a straight fight. (Well, technically, but thats because he was AFK, and he didn't get back to the computer in time to defend himself)
When we switched up, however, so he, the pro, had the axe, and I had the sword, I only won about 2/3's of the time. So a lot of the fight depends on how good you are at strafing and aiming and timing and such, because he got me a couple times while I didn't manage to hit him and I panicked and death.
I did not have a chance to see how a Noob vs Noob fight would go though, or a Pro vs Pro fight, cause I only have one friend who was able to get on :/ So I'm not sure how those would turn out.

It's awful and out of place in a block building game, just slightly different.
I play and have played numerous PVE and PVP games and Minecraft continues to have the worst combat experience of any.
I'd rather play Diablo's spamclick staggerfest than anything Notch/Mojang could put out for MC. Then there's that modders already did it better in TCon and other mods, this update is a ripoff like most of them, and now mods have to do more to make it playable for the 30% that don't actually enjoy vanilla.
Combat being good or bad is generally about how it feels to the player, people thought that FO4 had better gunplay than FONV.
1.9 has added hit sounds and a hit slash particle, that is the ONLY improvement in my eyes.
SO in theory it COULD happen, but the odds are way out there plus you must take in account of hills, fall damage, and other terrain as it effects battle

What about the boats? lily pads no longer break them.
Yeah! So, its possible, but its not always plausible. probably about the same chance that someone would kill you with a wooden sword in 1.8.
Me and my friend actually are gonna try and make a whole big video on random 1.8-1.9 changes and random little details, just to be a clarification, so I'll share that here when we get done

It really changes some people's style now. You can't really spam click anymore and it's hard to get the crit timing exact. I mean, it's pretty cool but it'll be pretty good if they changed it back. The combat before the update is more traditional and I like it like that.

The beautiful things in the world can not be seen by the eye, but have to be felt by the heart.
To me the combat is very boring, instead of killing something fast u have to hit it once, run away wait for ur sword to "recharge" then attack again and do it over again. There will be no dealing with large groups of enemies anymore even with the swipe attack. And it ruins PVP. every fight will be so slow.
*cough, cough* axe charge attack for crowds *cough, cough*
and also, this will not make pvp SLOW, it will make it intense, back when i literally couldnt win pvp because the dude i was fighting was CLICKING faster than me pissed me off. I personally believe that before now, it didnt even matter what weapon or armor u had unless it was like wood sword vs iron or stone sword vs diamond, the fact that it actually takes skill to pvp nowadays is fantastic and i wouldnt change it for anything.
i like how you proved one of my main points in that this update was made to cater people who were bad at fighting in minecraft 1.8. 1.9 made pvp EASIER you dont need to have the skill of fast clicking or quick switching anymore.if u couldnt click fast then you shouldve practiced. 1.9 pvp is both easy and luck based in 1.9. I fought a friend in 1.8 pvp and i almost never lost, then in 1.9 it was about 50/50. the more skilled player doesnt win. in ANY competition it should always be the more skilled player that comes out on top not somthing based on luck. anyone can do 1.9 pvp which is why people like it but it isnt more of a challenge like those people are claiming it is quite the contrary in reality.
The reason I don't like the combat system is because I feel like it takes too much away from the main aspect of minecraft, which is building and mining. I feel like whenever I try to commit to doing something other than mob fighting, I get swarmed. Before, I would be building and take a hit from a zombie or a skelly, not a problem just swing at them a couple times and its done. Now I feel like I have to take a whole break from building just to take a skelly out. Same thing with mining, it's just too painstaking to constantly be ducking around and trying to hit "strategically" when my whole purpose was to just get some ores. Lighting up areas with torches does help but it doesn't fix it.
Also, another thing that just ticks me off is that almost all mob grinders have stopped working. What took 20-30 seconds to clear 50 cows now takes well over 2 minutes.
well see the shield dude really has no point other than hes the reason why the other noob with the axe could come form behind the distracted pro
I suppose that makes sense....
