-Wood Axe does 7 damage... (3 hit kill) (same as diamond sword.) It might not have the same dps or same hit speed as a diamond sword but it does do same per hit. Just think about this for a moment... A wood axe? Imagine you are on survival games you just got yourself a diamond sword and a noob comes up behind you with a wood axe and hits you.. Boom! 2 more hits til death, and you might be thinking in your mind that you'd quickly turn around and hit him with the diamond sword and even it up quickly but in reality that doesn't happen. The noob would hit you and then run away (due to their being cooldown times.) then attack then run... etc until your dead.
I guess I'm a little confused.... what prevents you from: "you'd quickly turn around and hit him with the diamond sword and even it up quickly" doing that? And are we assuming that you have no armor? If you managed to get a Diamond sword, I'm hoping it was more than just dumb luck... you should have some armor, so you don't die in 3 hits.
And you have to remember, while their wooden axe might do 7 hearts in one shot, so does your sword. And since your sword recharges faster, you get to hit more. That places the Damage per Second of their axe at about 5 hearts, which is actually LESS than each hit, and the damage per second for your Diamond sword is 11, which is almost double the base attack damage.
And a Diamond Axe doesn't actually do any more damage than a Stone Axe, so its not like an Axe is always the best choice, simply because of its damage.
-Cool down times... This for some reason what all of the noobs are worshiping for some reason as if they haven't gone on 1.9 themselves. This might sound "Great and realistic" (I thought the same til I tried it.) I'm going to use this analogy cause for some reason alot of nubs don't get this.... 1.9 cooldowns will without a doubt slow down fights... (It's true face it... you know it and I know it.) so due to you knowing that fights are going to be slower in 1.9 I'm going to ask you a question what requires more skill to fight in slowness 10? or Speed 10? (let's pretend the whoever your fighting has chose the same option as you doesn't have a bow.) if you said Speed 10 you are correct. if you said slowness, then you should probably go call a doctor... my point is that you require more skill for the faster you fight. The other problem I have for Cool down times (Stated above) is that when someone attacks you (Depending on the person) they'll run away until their cool down is done and then turn around and attack again this'll go on until your dead.. also because of this fights will pretty much always depend on who gets the first hit.... it's true guys don't reject this. Now if your fighting a noob then you could probably kill them. but chances are most players you fight will be of near equal skill so most of your fights will depend on who gets the first hit. You might be thinking in your mind "That's not true I'll just.." Run-away until you heal?... Exactly.
I would have to say you are right. Fights ARE slower. They do not take more skill.
Do you know why I agree with you that it does not take skill, but I disagree with you, because I think thats a good thing?
The point of the combat update was not to increase the skill needed to fight. The point was to increase the strategy. The goal is not to see who has practiced more, who can aim better, who can click the fastest. The goal was to see who can think on their feet.
Sure, a head on head fight, with no change in the pace, will depend on who gets the first hit.
But why do a head on head fight, when you can shoot them with a couple arrows first, then smash their shield in with your axe, then slice them to bits with your sword? Maybe you do hit them over and over, really fast, not because you want to deal more damage, but because you want to force them into the pit that is behind them?
The goal is to think, and do more than just see who has the better muscle memory.
In fact, you said this yourself. 1.9 does not require more skill, it depends on how you like to PvP! Exactly!
But the way you said it, it sounded like the ways to play were reduced to this or that, instead of having a ton of options of different ways to fight. Which made it sound like a bad thing, even though that was the point.

1.9 combat, is OK, it takes strategy, which I like, BUT it makes combat WAY TO LONG. 1.9 CAN POTENTALLY break large PvP based games such as Hypixel's Megawall and Walls, Mineplex's Bridges, Evolution, and Hunger Games for almost all servers.
PvP in MC is not something that should take long. HOWEVER 1.9 makes a 20 second battle, longer than a minute.
Now lets bash shields shall we, Shields are invincible when they are up until they break. Now, lets say its hunger games, you see a noob with no armor, you have a diamond sword, your like OHH YA LETSA GO! You come to him to kill him, then BAM he puts up a shield, now he can just sit there and annoy you knowing a free kill is right there, but a fudging shield is in the way
A wood axe now does 7 damage, so does a diamond sword, great, so now in HG noobs can come up from behind you while you are still trying to get the noob behind the shield, and just hit you once, then run, hen hit you again, then run, the hit you again, and whoops, your dead.
Now, cool down times, it makes you have to sit and have a super long battle, and I can get adjusted to it, but Microsoft has done it again, look some newer people who A. Doesn't know how to PvP correctly, B. Don't like PvP, C. are just really new and don't know how to defend against a fast clicker are going to agree with this new update, and say that older MC players "cant adjust", or are P2W and don't like having their stuff messed up, no, its due to we loving what we already had, 1.9 combat will NEVER in my personal opinion be "better, or more strategic" than 1.7. So yeah, I'm not the biggest fan of 1.9 combat, but look at it this way, if 1.9 had never came out, we would not even have this debate, and it would be even more noobs ranting about how bad 1.7 combat is to them.

Really, I keep seeing people use this example, like they just randomly happened to find a diamond sword in the middle of nowhere.
And they never seem to consider using shields or armor for themselves!
And you know, since axes have a chance to disable shields for a moment, especially while sprinting, why don't you take one of those and use it on the shield guy from earlier?
....
OK and yes, it does take longer. I guess this part is literally just an opinion thing, because while you don't like that, I appreciate the chance to register a battle while its happening, instead of fighting as fast as possible.

1 minute isn't that long, some melee and explosion damage (and all magic) will get through shields, axes have a special crushing blow that temporarily disables shields, Microsoft isn't actually in charge of what gets added to Minecraft, and I though all axes did 9 damage now (and are way slower than swords). Fine. There are more ways for noobs to troll pros, but I don't see any problem with that.
I honestly think that the new combat in 1.9 is better because instead of the erratic and formless spam clicking, it's actual timed attacks which is a lot more calm and you don't need a wood pecker for your mouse. Besides, people should have been attacking like this for years because players and mobs have a .5 second invincibility time when attacked. I know that people say that it takes so much extra time to kill a mob but guess what. THE COOL DOWN TIME OF A SWORD IS LITERALLY A TENTH OF A SECOND LONGER THAN THE INVINCIBILITY TIME!!!!! So combat may FEEL longer but it's really no that different.
There are a few kinks with the current combat I think need to be addressed:
-Players with different feels to the game don't want to click.....Wait.... Click.... so slowly, or players that are patient feel they need to be awarded a stronger hit. I feel more weapons like different weighted swords would accommodate this just nicely
I totally agree with that. 1.9 had a PERFECT chance to add new weapons such as war hammers or battle axes (instead of buffing regular axes) and just made them attack slower.
You do realize that Shields only reduce damage, right? So yes, it takes quite a bit longer to kill them, but every attack still does 2.5 hearts. So instead of taking 3 hits to kill them, it takes 8 or 9 hits.

Yep, a Wooden axe does 7 damage.

Every time they hit you, you can hit them at least once or twice! Its not that hard to get in a hit or two while they run back and forth.
Now this is a grammar mistake on my part, I was implying that while the noob was running, were in purse, swing your sword at him attempt to kill him, but since you can only hit once for full damage, MOST LIKELY his cooldown will be shorter than yours as he hit first (so did Han)
Now last check (I don't really play 1 atm) when I tested it against some friends, it absorbed all damage, so I'm not sure what was going on there according to you.
For one, I still take damage from Zombies and Spiders when I have my shield up. Its not nearly as much, but I do take some.
And there is this, from the Minecraft Wiki: "Shields are used for blocking incoming attacks. Using one causes the player to slow to a sneaking pace, and blockable attacks coming from in front of the player will deal 33% damage for melee attacks and no damage for projectiles."
Now this is a grammar mistake on my part, I was implying that while the noob was running, were in pursuit, swing your sword at him attempt to kill him, but since you can only hit once for full damage, MOST LIKELY his cooldown will be shorter than yours as he hit first (so did Han)
I guess I'm a little confused on why you can only hit him once.
The cooldown for a diamond sword is 0.6 seconds. The cooldown for a wooden axe is 1.25 seconds.
Hopefully, you will have turned around and started attacking again before he can hit you again. Then, you only have to hit him twice more to take him out, correct? He has to do the same, but this is assuming he both times his next hit perfectly, and manages to hit you. Remember, even if he misses, the cooldown still resets. So, you have 3.75 seconds to take him out, if he doesn't miss and he times it perfectly.
Since the cooldown for a Diamond sword is 0.6 seconds, you have the opportunity to hit him 6(and .25) times. Lets assume it took you that .25 of a second to turn around.
Since all you need to do is hit him 3 times, you should have that in the bag!
This is also assuming you are both devoid of armor.
But, since you have a diamond sword, I REALLY hope you put some thought into making yourself some armor. Since he is a "Noob" wielding only a wooden sword, I don't expect him to have any armor.
Since you CAN find just two diamonds, I'm going to be generous and only give you iron armor, with no enchants, instead of diamond armor enchanted with protection.
A full set of iron armor provides 15 points of armor, which reduces each of his attacks to 3.78 damage, instead of 7... He has to hit you 6 times to kill you. This gives you 12 attempts to hit him, when you only need 3.
I could add a lot more variables to this as well, such as the diamond armor, and protection, and flint and steel, and lava buckets, and sharpness on your sword, and, of course, your own shield.
It just makes me a little bit frustrated when people throw two random characters into a situation, and say "Obviously the guy with this or that would win, and that's wrong", totally disregarding the fact that this situation is really unlikely to happen. I suppose, if you were in a survival games, and you happened to find a Diamond sword, it is a little more plausible to encounter that kind of situation.
But if there are diamond swords just sitting around in loot chests, how unlucky would someone have to be to get a wooden axe, instead of a stone or iron sword/axe? How many times could they miss the armor that is just lying around?
And into all of this, you also have to throw into it the fact that sometimes, people do miss, and others do dodge. If he really is a newbie, you can hopefully dodge his next attacks, while rarely missing yours, so you actually take less damage. The truth is, they would probably have a better chance to kill you if they had a wooden sword, than a wooden axe.
And if you were the better player, you could dodge some of his attacks, while attacking him, and maybe beat him. Of course, you still have to dodge twice as many attacks as he does, so its not the most likely. But it could happen.
Which, since you are the pro with more experience, makes sense.

On the part of the said pro having armor lets look at the situation of, he/she had little to none armor at the time as he/she went strait for the noob behind the shield, so in this case (we really should be minecraft theorists :/) the said pro has A. Some chain gear, B. Some leather boots, or C. No Armor. For the sake of argument lets go with C. no armor. If he has no armor, now he takes 3.5 hearts of damage, so now lets say he purses the noob, well if the pro can hit the noob within the first 3 seconds of the first hit the noob gave the pro, then he may win, now, lets say the pro misses, then the noob hits the pro for another 3.5 hearts, now the noob has the upper hand again. Now in most cases, the pro would A. Stop following, and regen, B, eat a gapple if he has one, or C. keep a distance, but continue following. Now lets say he continues following, and lets say he regens about 2 hearts during this ordeal. Now if the noob times it right and turns back, he gets another hit off, IF the pro doges, then the pro can hit the noob, turning the battle into his favor, if not, the noob still has the upper hand. In this semi-plausible (its so many variables that can happen) scenario the chances are for the noob to win are significantly higher than the pro. HOWEVER like I said, there are so many variables until I wont bother trying to point out them (i.e. lava buckets, other players, noob has armor, pro has armor, flint and steel, fall damage, etc. etc. etc.).
I guess I'm just wondering why the pro has no armor, AND manages to not dodge, while the noob manages to hit every time. :/

I can understand where you are coming from, but there are many variables in the situation, the situation that I gave was the pro had no armor due to going for the noob behind the shield right off the bat, and then another noob comes and hits the pro
I'm really sorry, I'm just not sure what you are talking about. :/ The pro doesn't have any armor because he went after the shield dude? And then the other guy came in from behind and attacked?
I guess I'm going to have to mention here, that a TEAM will usually have an advantage over a single player, simply because they have double the health that the single player has, and he can't attack them both at once.
Going with that, whats to say that the shield teammate, when you are chasing the wooden axe guy, finds another chest and gets his own weapon, and a nice chestplate or something? Then he can attack you from behind as well, and that will mean you lose, unless you find a better tactic.

Thank you for the hint , that will help a lot.
I didn't think I would have a problem with it, but I do.
I just got killed by the same skelly three times.
On Easy.
Even if I am missing some key element of the new combat, this should not happen.
Ever.
There is definitely something wrong with it.
I also hit an enderman a dozen times with a stone sword and still got killed by him, in full iron armor, and holding a shield.
Skeleteon: Use the shield to block arrows until close or just use a bow to shoot it from a distance
Enderman: Are you spam clicking? Try turning on the swing timer in the options so you can see when your swing timer is fully charged.

For one, I still take damage from Zombies and Spiders when I have my shield up. Its not nearly as much, but I do take some.
And there is this, from the Minecraft Wiki:
"Shields are used for blocking incoming attacks. Using one causes the player to slow to a sneaking pace, and blockable attacks coming from in front of the player will deal 33% damage for melee attacks and no damage for projectiles."
