I like combat in 1.9, but there haven't been any large changes to the core combat system for four years until now. I can understand why some people dislike the update.
Why can't anyone besides you understand why some don't like the update and hate it? everytime someone says that they don't like the changes because they have used the old system for years, they always get told "DERP GET USED TO THE CHANGES NOOB". I don't like it. I like to spend time on massive builds in survival mode, not fighting mobs constantly.

No, it wasn't. If the combat system had never been made, no one would be complaining about it being too easy. Now, it has been implemented, and the small portion of the community who doesn't like it is getting ignored because every time someone suggests a way to fix it, it just gets flammed by the hardcore "MLG PROEEESSSS!!!!" who never want it gone, even though it is not needed for everyone.

You don't need to be a "MLG PROEEE" to wait 0.6 seconds to attack again.
Personally I quite enjoy the new combat system, preferring the slower combat. In Skyrim, I liked mods that emphasized slower paces in 1v1 and especially more thoughts in 3+v1 combat, and this update seems to do something similar.
Really, this update is all about playstyles. You can still spamclick, though not as effective as before. You can be a calculating swordsman, a brash axe-wielder, or a long-range archer. Dual-wielding allows for new combat playstyles, shields allow for more tank-y playstyles, and will null an archer, being an effective counter to archers. An axe is a good counter to a shield-bearer, sometimes disabling the shield for a bit, albeit with a longer attack speed penalty. Archery puts you at a safer position at a distance, but you can kiss your frags goodbye if your foe has a shield.
There are times a slower combat system can be frustrating, yes. This update is far from perfect but it certainly, in my eyes, is an improvement.
All in all, it still boils down to your preferred playstyle, or combination of playstyles.
I haven't played PvP in the new update, nor any update since about 1.6.4 (I don't have reliable internet, usually having to either play at my school or library, both of which are poor options for fast-paced PvP). I do look forward to trying my hand at the new system, but for now I'll be practicing on the mobs in my SP worlds.
Not sure where I saw it but there are lines that can be put in a command block that disable the whole "cooldown" for using weapons, so that might be a start
Good or bad? I can't say for sure, because as stated previously, that's up to personal preference. However, I can say that it's not my cup of tea. I also find myself struggling to adjust because of how much it differs from what's been in Minecraft since 2009. I like almost everything else about 1.9.x, but the new combat mechanics are what stop me from playing it. If only if there was a mod that put 1.8.9's combat mechanics back in 1.9.x...
1.9 combat is HORRIBLE,it does not add skill it adds tedium, its not harder its slower. and why punish people for spam clicking? i spam the button in EVERY video game to make sure i attack at the perfect times. dark souls? yes, world of tanks? yes, none of those games punish you for it why does minecraft get off doing it? they literally turned 1.9 into a QTE and QTE are never skillful

Every game that has a reload has this exact mechanic. Having to wait a bit before attacking while also avoiding enemies is a fundamental part of many games. It increases the difficulty by making it so that you have to be careful when swinging or shooting. It's not there to annoy you. That's just a side effect.

Being able to spam click wil just make the game boring. Spam is not a skill, its just something you do when you don't know what you are doing.
By nerfing the spam clicking, it becomes harder. By making the game harder, it becomes less boring to play. Do you know why? Because it force you as the player, to think about what you are doing.
And if you think the fighting is boring, then play on peacefull or something.
The games don't punish you for spam clicking, but the games give you rewards for timeing.
If spam clicking works, its not you, it's the luck. -David

Try that after you accidentally aggravate the pigmen in the nether (they are impossible to fight, but a shield buys you some time to get back to the portal)

I've done this. On Hard. It's not that difficult to fend them off. You just have to be smart.

yea? and how many games punish you for hitting hte button too early?

All of them, since if you hit too early and miss you are forced to reload and can be killed during that time. Minecraft's "hit too early" is in a slightly different action than most, but it's the same concept. If you are too eager that you fail, you're going to be punished for it, and that's your fault.

Playing normal in all honesty is a waste. Play either easy or hard since most mobs can easily kill ya in normal (basically main difference between normal and hard is spiders who have effects and zombies with armor more often)
Sure it might be slow but want to know what's slower?
God apple and regen potion fights in pre 1.9
1.9 combat Is very strategic and generally more fun than getting carpal tunnel from spam clicking and dying from kill aura cheats.
it saddens me how I can't find a PVP server without a whiny owner who can't accept change and implement the new system.
This isn't the Owner. Most of the hardcore players who play on their servers hate 1.9, so they are not going to implement something that will drive away the core of their player-base. Also, I believe there are some servers that have 1.9 pvp mechanics in them, you just have to look.

I think 1.9 combat is a bit more difficult, but in a good way. It keeps you going in the game.
there is a difficulty called peaceful mode.
I like the new PvP System. The attack cooldown was a really needed update!
I know that, but I still liked fighting mobs pre-1.9. I like to fight mobs, but this cooldown makes it frustrating.

Anyway, that's my two-cents worth.
I play on servers that include 1.9 combat mechanics. Good without a doubt.

Help the Villagers to get jobs!
How to beat mobs at night:
1. Learn how the mobs behave
2. Use both hands
3. Have at least Iron Armor better
4. Do at least use Iron Sword or better
5. Hide in the bushes to suprise them
6. The mobs don't know whats behind them
