So I have my pens that are stuffed with animals. Typically I go and feed a stack of hay to each group, and then I drop in and kill about half the adults for their goods. Only problem now is that the swords do sweep attacks hitting everything next to the target, and I'm losing the baby animals as well. It's especially bad with chickens because chickens don't take much to kill.
There has to be some kind of solution, this is really frustrating.
To do a sweep attack, you must sneak or stand still, so maybe try jumping before hitting the animals. I think this should work.

We're not pawns of some scripted fate. I believe we're more. Much more... There's something between us all. Something that keeps us together... Like...invisible ties, connecting us.

That's more of a work-around than anything. Seeing this question posed, I now realize I'm going to have to re-design our Moo Temple (our community server has a desert temple converted into a cow farm; complete with auto-wheat farming below).
Our bouncing breeder generates baby cows into 1x2x1.8 harvest pens to each side (and down) of the breeder adults. We typically run 4 litters at a time, and just 'shave' the adults from the harvest pens after each litter is bred. Sweeping would be a problem for us, and jumping before each kill just doesn't make sense. I wouldn't mind using an axe or even a shovel, but you can't put Fire Aspect on those.... I prefer cooked steak vs. raw beef.

Yeah, I know it's just a work-around, as you say, but unless Mojang changes the mechanic, it's the best solution. By the way, you can put fire aspect on axes with enchanted books if I remember correctly, but you'd need to enchant a few of them before you finally got a fire aspect book. :/

Axes would probably be better to kill animals now. A critical with a stone axe or higher instantly kills most, if not all animals.
I actually just tried it out and wooden axes insta-kill any animal with a critical hit (They have as much damage as a diamond sword but are slower)

Could just use an axe, pickaxe, shovel, or even a hoe.
Or funnel babies into another room using 1 block wide holes. There are many simple Cow farms that do this.
But you have to right click to sweep attack, right?

Just walking normally (no sprinting or jumping) also triggers the sweep attack.
I could see this effect being a problem in the End as well, what's its range?
Just testing.
Hmm... this is interesting, never really though of this.
I guess for me I would probably have a chest right by my animal farm with an axe, and same with going to the end.
But who knows I might just always use an axe as a weapon once I get a diamond axe and a sharpness V book.
