I have a friend, kanedoesmc, who plays Minecraft. Well, he plays almost exclusively modded Minecraft. He almost never tries servers, maps, or vanilla.
We were talking about our collective adventures and misadventures, and I asked him, "Why do you always play with mods?" Came his reply, "Minecraft gets boring after a while. You run out of fun things to do. If you want to keep playing, you need to build redstone crap. You know how well I do that."
I think Minecraft never gets boring. I download maps, play servers, and when I finally dominate my survival world, I start another.
Is my homie right? Should I perform an exorcism? Should I back away slowly?
Vanilla Minecraft will eventually become very repetitve, and not everyone likes that. Those people either move on and find another game to play, or they download mods or adventure maps to enhance their experience.
I'm not one of those people by the way. I have been playing Vanilla Singleplayer survival for almost three years now, only occasionally stepping away from it to play on a survival server with friends.
Your friend is right. He thinks the game got boring, and that's probably true for him. Doesn't mean the game will ultimately objectively become boring though. Everyone plays the game differently after all, and everyne has different preferences. No reason to back away.
Basically this.
Personally for me, I find vanilla very boring and quick. When playing this sort of game, I need a form of progression to keep me going, I need something to work towards, a goal. In Skyrim your goal is to complete all the quests and get the best gear, Cities: Skylines to try and build a functioning city with as high-a population as possible, Minecraft? In my mind, it has no preset goals, you make the goals, and my own goal for that is to just progress, make things more efficient, get better gear, make a stable and safe base. Let's examine how easy that is in my opinion.
Vanilla Minecraft to me is personally a race to get diamond, same with modded Minecraft. Once you get diamond, then what? Get more ores? Expand the base? Defeat the Ender Dragon? Those can only carry you so far, then you'll run out of things to do, or you'll get bored along the way. Modded Minecraft offers lots more, I can build an automated smelting setup, build an automatic item sorting system that sorts my items into their corresponding chests, link both of these systems together so I dump ores in a chest and they get smelted then get sent back to their proper chests, I can complete Thaumcraft, I can get a quarry going, I can make gear that takes longer to get but has more incentive to get than vanilla, I can complete Botania, Blood Magic, I can build a base that's functional but also looks good due to mods like Chisel or Microparts. The list virtually doesn't end, even if I get diamonds, get an automatic smelting setup, I always have something else to do, something else to work towards. Vanilla? Once you get diamond there's basically nothing to work towards, there's no next tier to try and get, there's an illusion of a goal that is the Ender Dragon, that's it. The only real push to continue is getting more resources, and building a new base, but for what?
Modded Minecraft pushes forward that inevitable moment when I say "Well, that was fun." and delete the world and start a new one, it gives me more to do. Though, this is my opinion and experiences, so your's may differ.

I don't think he's talking about Minecraft in general, I think he's talking about the survival aspect of the game, which can get pretty boring after 1 year. I've been playing for 3 years, so I almost never try Survival anymore. However, I will play Survival when 1.9 comes out.
The thing is what others had said, that vanilla minecraft, does get boring after a while, with mods you enhance the vanilla and you get something much better.
The thing is with major updates vanilla minecraft "comes to life" again and people try all the new content,As user RobertFans said,it relays on creativity. That's why minecraft has 2(3gamemodes) The survival and creative.Survival, not the best one for making MAJOR things, but to make a nice house and really just to survive. While the creative mode is just to make massive creations, mechanism etc.
You shouldn't back away from minecraft vanilla, unless you want to.
Modded basically ads new things that probably won't be added.
Wait... Broc Monk? Here? I think you're in the wrong section, Broccoli! *Selfie*
That aside, I don't just play survival. With servers, maps, and, one of my obsessions, I'm ashamed to say, using awesome texture packs, I wouldn't think it possible to become bored of vanilla. I play Mineplex! They always have something new! I play the maps of 5upertrinity, McMakistein, PhoenixSC, SethBling, qmagnet, Team Wooloo, CDFDman, rsmalec, Jigarbov, and Cubehamster and samasaurus!
If you've played Diversity 2, Skyblock, The Heist, The Dropper, Simburbia, We are the Rangers, Unbreakable, or even Herobrine's Mansion, you would be crazy to be bored. I honestly played Herobrine's Mansion 3 times!
People should be able to play a game however they like as long as it isn't illegal or harmful to others; if I want to play on a version that is over 2 years out of date I should be able to (and actually do) - the same applies to using mods, or only playing one way (Survival, singleplayer, servers, etc). Of course, it is annoying when they complain about the game but don't try doing anything about it, such as trying out something new or even taking a break from it for awhile.
Indeed, that makes vanilla so awesome. Give players just one hopper and the most eleborate farms and clocks are builded. Give players just one slime block and huge robots are ruling the earth, firing explosive missiles, walking through giant real working doors. Give players just one armor stand and they make the most advanced out of the world command contraptions with them, like camera's that takes blocky pictures of what they see in front.
Even vanilla teleporters are already build, using thrown enderpearls as core mechanic, and also huge, insane contraptions that even affect the world generation, without the use of command blocks.
In my opinion, that is the great strength of vanilla. The best mods are then the mods who gives you endless possibilities with just a few simple mechanics or blocks.
Unfortunately, not everybody understands redstone, e.g., my friend. I mean, I do, and redstone is pretty fun to mess with, but he doesn't look at redstone and say, "I understand this."
I play a mix of vanilla and modded minecraft so I have a variety of friends who likes vanilla-only and modded-only minecraft. I think it depends on a person's playstyle! I too was obsessed with vanilla only servers for years. It is probably because I was an alpha player and need that nostalgic old school fix in my life. I usually find myself playing on and off when I do this even with friends to play with. The thing is I always come back after a while, to make a new world like you do! Of course now I'm opening up to modded servers and I love it! I still enjoy playing on vanilla servers though because I want to hang around with my friends.

Some people just prefer more dynamic content then what Minecraft has to offer. Mods can offer a lot of dynamic content.

TheMasterCaver's First World - possibly the most caved-out world in Minecraft history - includes world download.
TheMasterCaver's World - my own version of Minecraft largely based on my views of how the game should have evolved since 1.6.4.
Why do I still play in 1.6.4?
Minecraft does not have enough blocks/items/things to keep you occupied for very long. Everyone likes that feel of "Idk wth is around this corner"
