Basically it depends on what kind of TNT it is. Sometimes map makers put down just normal TNT, which you can mine up and take just like in the temples in vanilla minecraft.
Other times map makers put in a special kind of TNT called "Primed TNT", which basically means that it's already primed. As in someone already used a flint and steel or lit it somehow, and it just needs to be updated to explode. And when you punch that primed TNT, it updates and blows up. So just to be safe put some water down when mining TNT...especially in CTM maps. Water should help the terrain not get fully destroyed.
Or you know, hit it and run.

You can easily negate the damage a trapped chest will do, and loot the chest and the trap parts.
All a trap chest does is red out a redstone signal when it is opened. And that redstone signal usually is set to trigger some sort of trap. You can see a chest is a trapped chest if it has a little red area around it's front, like this (one on the right is the trapped chest):
So when you see a chest with the red area, you know it's a trapped chest. So what you should do next is dig around it and find the redstone wiring. As long as you don't open the chest, nothing will go wrong...at least unless there is Primed TNT behind it which will blow up if you hit it. But once you dig around it and destroy the redstone wiring/TNT/whatever else there may be, you can then open the chest and loot it. Because even if you open it and the chest sends a redstone signal...nothing will happen because the signal doesn't have anywhere to go now.
EDIT: As far as water goes, TNT won't hurt blocks that are in water. So you can also just place water over the chest and trigger it. That should make it so the chest doesn't blow up. But it's a bit risky blowing the trap on purpose.

How do I disarm traps and pick up TNT on the Vechs Super Hostile map on the Realms server?
In desert temples in Vanilla MC I just mine it but when I try that it arms and I have to back away before it blows up.
Just testing.
can't
Oh,
thanks!
Just testing.
You can...sometimes.

How about a trapped chest?
Is that just a trap to kill/damage the unwary or is there some way to get at the contents?
Water won't protect the chest unless it's between it and the TNT, will it?
Just testing.

There's no redstone to cut, just the trapped chest directly on the TNT.
But the water trick works. Thanks.
There's plenty of time to get out of range as long as you're ready for it.
