I see Minecraft as its own world with its own quirks. It really isn't set in any time period, and is very broad, but if it had to be one, I'd maybe say post-apocalyptic or similar. If I had to come up with a theory on how the player's life in the world came to be, it'd be something like this:
Basically, Steve lives on an advanced planet of some sort. Soon, some catastrophic event occurs which destroyed his world. Or maybe he was exiled or something. Either way, he ended up in the world of Minecraft with next to nothing. He had only a basic knowledge of electronics, but practice improved that as Steve learned to create Pistons and such. Steve slowly finds his way in the world - an average joe having to create everything from nothing as his ancestors did, but with basic knowledge from his homeworld which accelerated his learning.

I think Minecraft takes place in it's own time, since you have things like blacksmiths and swords, but advanced things like command blocks, wiring, and electric (redstone) appliances. Just my opinion
To better understand the most basic needs in minecraft, I figure why not get some guesstimates and ideas on what year/age/era minecraft
most closely represents. And the biggest piece to me is why Steve (or other counterparts) does not know how to make a wheel.

A post-Apocalyptic steam-punk like universe where wheels were never invented.
so would it be safe to say Steve's objective is to restore humanity? whilst digging for that ever so rare diamond vein thats is lol.

Steve invented the wheel, it's on the minecart.
Began playing during Alpha 1.2.6.

Awesome I love it! techniquly i would think redstone would be more advanced than electricity as it utilizes its own power source
to function. Also seems that while Steve does place wheels on a minecart but isn't actually capable of crafting a wheel alone is
a bit odd. perhaps this futuristic race had used slime blocks to mobilize their transports coupled with redstone. The basic wheel
left forgotten

Yeah, post-apocalyptic probably, just look at all the ruins.

I think the era we are in will be for awhile before its called a name but maybe the "Era Of Technological Videos Game"......Really I don't know XD
I'm looking at the years between 2050 and 2080ish. As this would/may be a more appropriate timeframe for a post-apocolyptic world
