I wanted to check something that's always bugged me but never really asked about it before til now.
How does spawning of Sheep, Cows, Wolves and such work in Minecraft? Do they spawn only once when a new chunk has been initially generated, or do they gradually populate randomly over time? And if the latter, how often does this occur and does it occur for ALL species? I know squid are pretty common for repop'ing, but whatabout the rest? And would say Wolves or Ocelots do the same in their respective Biomes?
Just something I want clarified by somebody that knows the code better than I
I'm not currently reading the wiki but I know my information is pretty close to correct. Look it up to be 100% sure, but this should be all you need to know.
Passive mobs spawn in on world generation and that is USUALLY the only time they spawn. However, they always have a chance of spawning on GRASS blocks that have a light level of 7 or higher. Their spawn rate is much lower than hostile mobs, and because they can ONLY spawn on grass that is lit it is much much more rare for passive mobs to spawn during play time. In fact, I think passive mobs are only able to spawn like... 1/400th of the time hostile mobs can spawn... I believe Ocelots follow the same rules but can only spawn above sea level in Jungle biomes. I don't know whether or not Wolves follow the same spawn pattern because they are considered neutral mobs instead of passive, but I assume they spawn more like hostile mobs, because Spiders and Zombie Pigmen are also considered Passive and don't ever have trouble spawning. Wolves only spawn in the... Taiga biome? I believe that's the one.
If you're playing something like a Survival Island (which I do usually), light up the whole island and make sure it's covered in grass, then just go caving or mining. You'll get Sheep, Pigs, Chickens, Rabbits or Cows eventually.

They also spawn in new chunks.
