I used it alot, and I remember back when I was using it, a friend, we were as close as brothers, banned me with no hesitation when he found me XRaying, I then used fly and Xray in 1.7, and stopped when 1.8 ended. I never hurt anyone, I was only benefitting myself, usually people find hackers worse than griefers and killers. I just wondered why? I am actually a Moderator on a server, and stopped using this due to responsibility, but I never knew why.

Because it's cheating. It's not fair if some people use X-Ray or fly hacks and others don't. Unless a server specifically allows hacking, which I haven't heard of.
I find that griefers are worse than "hackers", or the users that use X-Rays, flying cheats, and the like. At least the "hackers" are just enjoying themselves and not annoying anyone else, eh?
But yes, on multiplayer servers that type of stuff is considered cheating. Giving yourself an unfair advantage over others, it's quite frowned upon. Although you stopped that, good for you!
If you use X-Rays and the like on single-player, there's no problem with that. That's rather boring IMO, but if that's how you like to play then no one else should worry about it.
This ties in to a rant I posted a while back in response to someone who wanted opinions on whether doing something in a SSP game was cheating. My position was that it wasn't, because cheating is a violation of the rules that have been agreed upon by two or more competitors, and where there is only one person, the rules are whatever that person wants them to be, so it's impossible to break those rules. This is the perfect counter-example: Players have agreed to a certain set of rules, like "No X-raying" and "no flying". A player breaks that agreement -- flies when it is not permitted, for instance. That is, therefore, cheating. And cheaters are heartily disliked by honest people -- or even dishonest people who aren't actually cheating at the moment, when you come right down to it.
Think about it in another setting: you're having a cookout, and while you don't really think about it that way, the participants agree on some rules: for instance, each person gets two hot dogs, so there will be enough for everyone. Your cousin Bill agrees to only take two hot dogs, but when your back is turned, he grabs five. You catch him when he's stuffing his face. I doubt if anyone (especially the people who have to settle for one hot dog each because Bill took more than his share) are really going to be happy with this guy.
Cheating in a game is the same way: it's grabbing more than your agreed-upon share of resources, whether they're of in-game property (duping), time (flying, speedhacking), or information (X-raying). People really hate cheaters. And well they should.
Because It's Cheating, And Only People With Lack Of Skills And Ratkids Do That.
Also You Can't Say "I Never Hurt Anyone" Because It Isn't True At Least In A Direct Way. For Example, Imagine That You Have Been Looking For Diamonds For Many Days And When You Are Close To Them, Some Average Untalented Cheater Used XRay For Find The Locations Of The Diamonds While You Been Taking A Break. Then He Just Mined Straight Down And Took Them In Just A Couple Of Mins Then Get Out The Hole Using Stone.
He Didn't "Anything Wrong" Or "Hurt Anyone" But Turn All Your Effort, All Your Sacrifice Into Stone And Worse It's That You Didn't Know That It Happened And Continued Mining In Search Of Diamonds But Finding Only Coal.
It's cheating, even if you're only benefiting yourself. would you appreciate if you discovered that Bill Gates never actually did any work, he just had a money machine?
But yes, on multiplayer servers that type of stuff is considered cheating. Giving yourself an unfair advantage over others, it's quite frowned upon. Although you stopped that, good for you!
Well, that's who I was, and stopping it don't make me better.

You seem to dislike Justin Bieber, and I never played with others, only benefitted myself. If you are not technically giving a disadvantage to others, I suppose it isn't bad, it's cheating, but it is not something bad in my opinion. I now have a responsibility, so those days are over.

Xray- for when vanilla minecraft isnt easy enough.
Joking aside- it has a few legitimate uses [notably tracking other Xrayers as admin], but also making sure I don't plough through someone's basement.
Using it to locate ores/materials/caves/bases ect is cheating through and through.

I do not support the type of people who will use hacking as an advantage over griefing, killing, and raiding. I never did that.

People hate on all kinds of hackers because hacking gives you an advantage.
Who wouldn't want to be able to see ores while others can't, fly while other's can't and so on?
Don't get me wrong; griefers and hackers are pretty annoying. When talking about which one is worse, I think that griefers are sliiightly worse. But again, both are pretty annoying to me.
As I said earlier, a normal server, and myself, would consider any type of hack (flying, X-Ray, etc) to be cheating as it provides the user(s) an unfair advantage over others.
Hackers give themselves an unfair advantage when playing the game, which is under no means fair to other players. Especially PvP based hacks that void the skill required to actually win. XRay is pretty horrible because when used in a faction raiding enviroment, it can be used to find and raid other player's bases.

Even going "far out" and x-raying can inadvertently hinder someone who plans to build a house far away from spawn. Not to mention the fact regardless of where you do it you still get a unfair advantage. The reason people dislike hackers is because of not only the rule breaking. But because for someone to work to get such and such amount of diamonds, and then someone goes and gets the same amount of material and work done in more time. The human mind see's this and views it as "I build this amazing castle and got all of these riches - But he x-rayed and did it in half the time with more resources left over and more in stock? Why should I even bother to work like this is someone is just going to cheat and one up me."
And in reality that's why people hate cheaters. Not because of the x-ray but because the mind is programmed in such a way that when something unfair like that happens it makes all of your achievements seem less even if you did them more "Legit" then him. This is why even people with vastly different personalities hate cheaters. Because they make our work seem less in comparison because it is. For example I will be the first to say I am not a nice or particully likeable person and neither are some of my friends, We hated a group that made base close to us and constantly annoyed us. But we left them as they were breaking no rules. And they were mad at us for being annoyed at there annoyingness.
But when our mines started running dry with tunnels dug strait down and no diamond and less iron in sight we started to blame eachother, But when we found out it was the new guy in a hut a bit away we had not noticed due to our squabbles we changed from "Passive aggressive and sometimes just aggressive towards each other" To "Okay I know we kinda hate each other but lets get together and get proof on this new guy" And after we did what I can only explain as a needlessly long lookout followed by several of us recording him going straight to diamond several times. We gave it to staff, They banned the person. And HECK we even got on better after we had something to divert our dislike/hatred against.
