As a Mac user, I can't say I'm optimistic about the future. Though I doubt the Mac version will become fully discontinued (In the sense that the launcher is auto-updated to stop working on Mac), I can definitely see Micro$$$oft discontinuing updates for Mac.
I'm also a bit worried about the future of resource packs, especially considering I always use them.
At this point I'd honestly be completely okay with it if M$ completely stopped updating on everything except for XBone. That way, Minecraft could live on through mods, resource packs, and the like.
No one should be optimistic about minecraft's future.
Microsoft just invested 2.5 billion dollars, that is a lot of money. They are going to want to recoup that, believe it or not. Which means future game design decisions and decisions in general are going to be motivated by money.
Thankfully there's tonnes of alternatives to minecraft, although the children will be left behind because of their loyalty to minecraft (brand loyalty is good guys). At least any of us with half a brain knows the world isn't ending.
On another note, wonder if the buyout of bukkit was at all related to Notch's plan to sell.
As a former die hard Microsoft supporter I think that Microsoft has to know that if they mess this up, try to dominate control to one console and not give support that they will be alienating an already ticked off consumer base that they are trying to get back. I know that I have just about had my fill of Microsoft and I'm not alone it wouldn't be the first time a major computer company has shot themselves in the foot. Want to see the Windows 8 release debacle on steroids just mess with Minecraft. My two cents.
Why is there all of a sudden a bunch of Newbies posting here?
I smell something suspicious...
Might have something to do with the topic of the thread, it's a pretty major event for minecraft. I can't speak for everyone but I don't use twitter or anything like that so this is the best place to go to discuss it. Personally I wish we could all organize and shift our focus to another open source minecraft clone. But I'm not a modder so I don't know which one the community would prefer.

The problem with that is twofold. First of all, brand loyalty. (golden goose syndrome) Second... none of them are really good enough at this point to really get behind. They all have the same problems Minecraft has been plagued by this whole time... .just a bunch of amateurs and no real pro's with any real experience in game design. Sure, a couple of them have some really great ideas and one of them is "ooh shiny"... but being realistic here... they are all promising features they have no idea how to implement and don't have the teams behind them to pull it off. Not to mention that none of them (other than the faithful C++ rewrite) have the charm or that something special that has made Minecraft the hit that it is.
The best scenario we can hope for at this point is Microsoft puts some real pro's in charge of development and starts working on polishing this mess of coding disaster until it ceases to be a shiny turd... then and only then, moving forward with development that is planned by people who know how to make games properly.
Considering the fact that Microsoft's whole motive was to buy Minecraft for economical purposes, if they want the game to bring them profit, they'll have to do something good if they want to keep some of us as regular users. The more crappy content they try to "fill" the game up with, the more diluted the gameplay is gonna be. If MS messes up, things will be bad for them, and besides, people are raging over this to begin with.
Microsoft doesn't spend money they can't afford to write off as a recoverable loss. let that soak in for a second.
Ok...moving on... They didn't buy Minecraft to make money off of Minecraft itself. They bought a franchise. The money they make will come from future titles within the Minecraft universe. Minecraft 2, Minecraft Story Adventure titles...etc. It's not about this game specifically. All we can hope for is them giving us a stable rewrite with a proper modding api before they move on entirely to said new games in the franchise.
I hope there will never be a Minecraft 2, because that would mean the end of the Java version of Minecraft, and modding would go with it.
But there's one thing they should do, they should crack down on all those who hide their mods behidn adf.ly links and should forbid the usage of such shady ad linking sites.
Congratulations, you're against supporting the main forge dev, who subsides entirely on the profits of those links. Modding would go with that.
You managed to decompile and continue without me giving source code? O_O Bro, you are a god. Of course do whatever the [REDACTED] you want!!!! Good luck on it

I also feel that this is Awkwardly similar to the Production of DOOM and DOOM 2.
-Both made by amateurs
-Both innovative.
-Games that look like it are shunned for being clones.( For Doom: System Shock, and For Minecraft: Blockscape, many others).
-Microsoft considers to buy both games at one time.
-Ported for many Operating Systems and Consoles.
-Started a new revolution in Computer Rendering (Voxels).
-Both have pixelated 16 bit graphics (Doom may have 32-bit).

because getting paid pocket change for making you wait five seconds before downloading something we put hours/months/years of our free time into is too much to ask of you. don't like it, don't click our links. don't wanna support our work, don't use our mods. we don't need your ungrateful pennies.
To make it short, Minecraft will still be on PlayStation, Mac, Linux, iOS, Android, and Raspberry PI and Minecraft for the PC will still have mod support and will still be using Java. Even though Microsoft owns Mojang now, Mojang is still the developer for Minecraft and Minecraft won't have a change in developers.
you are assuming they (Mojang) retain full creative control. you are also assuming Microsoft will not replace/change the dev team at Mojang (which they need to do).

Odds are they won't. They know Minecraft is a cash cow as it is, and if they mess it up they may lose the fanbase.
Their best bet is to stay the course, and throw resources at Mojang, but not take people away. I would't be surprised if they add members to the team, but not replace them.
How about hire more for the development and KEEP the current staff? I mean their cash flow is gonna be the same still but if more at on the project then imagine how fast things will come out.. And with that being said Microsoft would make alot more money and faster with more people on the project

This is probably what is going to happen.
They will keep the current staff and add more members to take some of the pressure off of them. This may make for quicker updates, and having them be more stable. It may also mean they will be able to actually get out the mod API and optimize the game to make things like Optifine not necessary.

all good things come to an end..hoping for the best expecting the worse. Mincecraft will change. The quality will diminish. Mac and PS4 user's may get an inferior product in the future, giving special treatment obviously to windows and xbox when it comes to exclusives and extra content. Microsoft can do anything they want and I wouldn't be surprised if they cut out all mods, packs, maps, saves, anything community related, etc..it's going to be very limited.
Sure I'd love to be positive but it's Microsoft we're talking about here.
so far they are keeping ALL current support guys, yay
