Microsoft and EA alone couldn't be capable of making good games. Least EA did make some good games back in the 8-Bit/16-Bit days but since then they've gone ridiculous. Microsoft? Only able to make Flight Simulator and those demo games you've seen when they're on Windows 95/98 discs? lol. There's a difference being that you have the capabilities within yourself to make something good. To acquiring others with those capabilities to make something you're incapable of and taking the credit for. Don't give EA/Microsoft too much credits because you think that every game released by them are good. They're only good via acquisitions of other people from other studios to do things they're incapable of pulling out by themselves anymore.
Credit the leftover staff from previous studios instead. Like I'll know anything from 1.8 and on made to Minecraft, I'll credit the ACTUAL team who are still with Minecraft from Mojang. Not Microsoft themselves.
I've been developing software and operating systems for 30 years. Any programming language has issues. It's all dependent on the skill level of the programmer.
That's not quite true... C# is free thru Visual Studio. C++ is very bad at garbage collection and is very easy to write poor code. Java has issues also.
Theoretically yes, but C++ requires a team full of geniuses to avoid endless memory and stability issues. And most teams are made up of mediocre developers. I've never seen a C++ project go smoothly. They always brag about the language but are always the long pole in the tent. With a decent QA team, even mediocre developers can turn out a mostly bug-free Java product. Unfortunately, Mojang seems to lack both of those and would be far more out of their depth on a C++ product (or even C#, since that's not their core competency).
And on the cost of C#, you still have to pay for Visual Studio, don't you? Or has that changed?
Just imagine how much modpacks would cost, let alone making a modpack..

You know who is going to kill the modding community? The modders. I now count 3 big mods that have quit just based on the Microsoft deal alone. Nothing stated about what will happen. Just speculation and the hypothetical fear that "something" will change to kill Minecraft.
The deal Notch made with Microsoft isn't sad. This community's response is.
If you are talking about Bukkit, it had nothing to do with the MS buyout. They forgot they were owned by Mojang and thought that they could do whatever they wanted. They also thought that they own their own code...they do not. Since Mojang owned them, Mojang also owned all the code they wrote for the CraftBukkit as well.
Dinnerbone also promised that he will personally update CraftBukkit to support 1.8, and will likely maintain it until an offical API is released.
I know Java is not a favorite programming language of MS, but you think they'll stay with it until they decide which code to go with?
Is there different programming language out there that would be good substitute for Java?
They won't recode the existing game. They'll release a Minecraft 2 or something, that will likely be DirectX based (C++ or C#, most likely). But that also means replacing all of the existing programmers (who won't be able to make the transition in the time frame they now need).
Maybe things won't be that bad; I just saw on Twitter that you can now select which player model you want to use, and indeed, in my profile there is an option to select a model:
And on the cost of C#, you still have to pay for Visual Studio, don't you? Or has that changed?
Visual C# Express is free and highly capable. It's missing a lot of the power toys from higher VS editions but I'd still take it over any version of Eclipse.

totally agree. Let's get our fear and responses under control and give this a fair chance. How sad would it be if minecraft dying became a self-fulfilled promise just because players thought it would
And earlier about modding community: the current EULA we signed for downloading 1.8 allows plug-in-mods--explicitly stated as being free to make and distribute, what Mojang cracked down on was mods that distribute pieces (or all) of the complete game. This is illegal as it is piracy and that's all they were trying to clarify. Whatever happens in the future I doubt microsoft can renege on this agreement because it was in writing when we players signed it. Just carefully read any future contracts you sign if you download anything microsoft puts out. As it stands now, if you own a registered version of 1.8 you are free to mod it to your heart's content.
For all those who pirated: well sucks to be you. I'm pretty sure things are about to get a lot tougher with microsoft and I doubt their contract will be as lenient if you finally decide to buy the game...should've bought it from Mojang when you had the chance.
Space Expedition to EPIC 204:Go on a Space-Age Adventure to visit and explore EPIC 204, a wacky world of dense asteroids and full of alien life! Experience Custom Seasons, Weather, Over 50 new creatures, Beautiful Biomes, Alien Ruins, Dungeons, and new space age tech crafting recipes!
well, modders can't sell their modpacks, but actually the Mojang EULA states that if you mod minecraft, your mod can be legally taken by them without compensating you. So yes, they actually could legally take a good mod and resell it with no consequences. Microsoft may do just that there is so much free mod material out there. I doubt they'll copy/paste but they'll probably use portions of existing mods for dlc.

I'm sad. I don't think its going to be good for the Minecraft community in general. Maybe the average player won't notice.
I've been playing for short time, I'm no way near knowledgeable of the game. I do know though, i liked the fact it was owned by a big money making corporation. Its only matter time till they try to mine Mincraft of what they want from it. People. Future young consumers for their products, to hook them into MS's services.
Seattle Times wrote up something interesting about the purchase.
It mentions use of Microsoft Cload services to help speedup and basically turn younger players to science. Which later I'm fine with, but how is MS's Cload services going to improve things? Don't they have host of problems of their own?
Now that Microsoft has bought Mojang i think Microsoft will find a way to make more money out of it.
Things like special paid updates n
What do you think? Will you support this?
If they make you pay for a certain update, you still have the choice of not updating. Remember, you have access to any version of Minecraft, whether it is Mojang's or Microsoft's.
Maybe things won't be that bad; I just saw on Twitter that you can now select which player model you want to use, and indeed, in my profile there is an option to select a model
Yes, this has been added since the buyout.
This may have been added since the buy-out, but it was announced at the same time as the 1.8 update, IIRC. Also... I really doubt Microsoft is going to start changing the game this week. The deal won't even be fully finalized for months to come...
Microsoft and EA alone couldn't be capable of making good games. Least EA did make some good games back in the 8-Bit/16-Bit days but since then they've gone ridiculous. Microsoft? I have to take issue with this. Microsoft, on its own, made one of my favourite games of all time (albeit I admit it's a very obscure one these days) -- a space sim called Allegiance. Okay, so this was a decade and a half ago, but if you're going back to 8-bit/16-bit days, I say it's fair game. It was (still is, really) a genuinely innovative game. And, notably, when it failed to be commercially successful (it was quite different from most other games at the time, and very difficult to get good at), Microsoft released the source code under a shared license. Not quite open-source, but still pretty neat. Thanks to this, there's still a small community of the game's fans modding and updating the code to this day. Microsoft isn't all bad...

This is not true or correct, in any way, shape or form.
Anyone writing code has copyright over that code, and Mojang/MS can not use anyone else's code without permission.
Its seems that most people have very little faith in what Microsoft will do with Minecraft, however, is no one seeing the value in the community and current product?
Yes, Microsoft is in the business of making money, no doubt about it. However, they purchased a successful product with a built in community and critics. They could be reading these forums and hearing everyone say "DON'T DO ANYTHING STUPID! DON'T ADD CARS! DON'T MAKE A STORYLINE ect." so why would they? Yes they will need to improve, create new things and attract more buyers, but that doesn't automatically mean they are going to destroy a community of people that already exist.
I could be wrong, but everything at this point is speculation and anger. With the Minecraft video game also comes the rights to the Minecraft NAME meaning that Microsoft can get royalties and profits from other sectors only related to the franchise. Maybe a Minecraft popsicle, or keyboard or some other commodity. Does stuff like that REALLY matter?
The only thing that I will not accept from Microsoft is a subscription or paying for regular updates/expansions. That is a personal choice because I am not interested into buying further into Minecraft for things like that. One thing that drew me into Minecraft was the one time fee and unlimited possibility. The biggest thing about this is we don't know till something changes. Until then, just enjoy what you already have been.
Let's face it. DLC, add-ons, in app purchases, advertising in app .... its the business model of today with most of the more popular titles on the market. It would be foolish on Microsoft's part to not implement the same ideas, in some form, into Minecraft. They will want to generate profits at every corner possible. And it's certainly not going to happen with the current business model. In which the user purchases Minecraft PC and gets any/all future updates/mods for free. Eventually your "new" sales dry up. Time to find a new way to make more money off this monster!
The xBox version already employs this model. Texture packs, skins, avatar items ... all for a fee. With minimal freebies here and there. What does that mean for the future of MC?? Get your wallets out.
Mojang I think was mostly in it for the love of the game and community. Microsoft ... loves money.
totally agree. Let's get our fear and responses under control and give this a fair chance. How sad would it be if minecraft dying became a self-fulfilled promise just because players thought it would

Actually, you read the EULA wrong; they CLEARLY distinguish between mods to the game and plug-ins:
Any tools you write for the Game from scratch belong to you. . Modifications to the Game ("Mods") (including pre-run Mods and in-memory Mods) and plugins for the Game also belong to you and you can do whatever you want with them, as long as you don‘t sell them for money / try to make money from them. We have the final say on what constitutes a tool/mod/plugin and what doesn‘t.
Read that again - they clearly mention mods AND plugins.
Same here - mods OR plugins; the "do not distribute" means "do not distribute working copies of the game"; last I heard, any mod required that you install it into the game for it to work - they can't run by themselves:
f you've bought the Game, you may play around with it and modify it. We'd appreciate it if you didn't use this for griefing, though, and remember not to distribute the changed versions of our software. Basically, mods (or plugins, or tools) are cool (you can distribute those), hacked versions of the Game client or server are not (you can't distribute those).
Also of note, they even distinguish between mods made by directly editing the base classes (like my own mods, "pre-run mods") and mods that are injected at runtime (like Forge mods, "in-memory mods") and don't say anything about whether the former in particular are illegal (of course, even Forge mods rely on Forge to modify the game so they can work).
Also, I wonder what they even mean by "plugins" anyway, seeing that the "plugin API" hasn't been released yet...
