Minecraft will die out, simple as that. Bucket is now gone along with cauldron (mcpc+) next to fall will be Forge. As soon as microsoft is able to start making changes, then you will see things like this:
m$ plans to make back the $2.5 billion within 1 year, i see the game becoming $40+ with a monthly subscription and only m$ hosted servers.
licensing fees for server owners
Could mean the end of us Linux users playing it.
If history has shown us anything from the past, is that when a huge company like MS, EA and such, buy out a company with a great game, those said company kill the games we love. Look at EA and what happen to Dark age of Camelot, and Command and Conquer, While those games may have been killed by EA and not MS, the point is the same.
One, I don't think self-ran servers fit into Microsoft's horrid revenue plan, and two I share the disdain for this like many others here. Also they don't like Java, or people using and editing their base code so much (So Forge, The "New Bukkits" wont last, Optifine, and McPatcher, wont last), I have great amounts of pessimism for this deal, and I am so sorry this is happening. I'm one foot out the door Microsoft, do something to KEEP this community.
As long as no one is surprised the day you boot up minecraft and your mods no longer work. And keep in mind how often Microsoft currently updates their game for free. As people have mentioned, there is 2.5 billion with a b dollars to make back and something will have to give. I believe it to be horrible news for minecraft players. While I guess I'm happy for Notch in that he picks up 2 billion bucks, I can't believe he didn't have enough already and that he would let a corporate entity take his baby. Sad. The only hope is that there were "conditions" to the sale that are as yet undisclosed, but I doubt it. 2 billion buys you the right to do whatever you want with the game and believe that MS will.
..and to see this beloved indie fall into corporate hands is kind of sad. On the other hand, who knows. Maybe Microsoft won't mess it up.
I seriously hope Microsoft won't mess it up, but so far so good since Mojang's still working on it with the same workers and whatnot. Also, whenever I hear the word 'Indie', i think of the Skateboard term for it.

Microsoft will probably move to C#. The Xbox platform is already written in this, so a port to c# would not be very difficult. C# is also supported on all OS (using Mono on Linux). Microsoft doesn't have any applications written in Java, so I don't expect this to continue.
If the New and Improved Microsoft was smart, they would expose a modding API and release a free development kit. The community thrives on mods and the ability to customize the look and feel through resource packs. If they want to keep making $$$$, they won't kill this. What this would allow is a better Minecraft on console and mobile platforms.
I expect them to charge for the new version since they have stated the ROI should be realized by the end of 2015. I expect a different charge for the server version if they release it - possibly they move to cloud services to hook up all versions together. If this happens, it will probably be a small subscription fee.
They will crack down on licensing fees. Any of the images being used for free will now cost a bit to license.
Watch the Twitter verse for the signs. Searge may not be allowed to release MCP for 1.8. The developers may start to mention learning to code a different way, or post some snippet in c#.
Not much should change until January. We'll just have to see what happens in the next few weeks. I expect the meetings are already getting set up.
At least we can keep the everything up to 1.8 and still run it. I don't intend to spend $30 for Minecraft 2.0. I don't see there being that much value in an update to buy it. $10 maybe....
Hopefully the future of Minecraft will be ok. Microsoft desperately wants to be a player in the cloud and this is the way to accomplish it.
I'm all for C# or c+........ More stable MC that can do more. Yes less mods and prob plugins but better quality ones
C# is just a lower quality version of Java. And you'll get a lot less mods, since you have to pay big bucks for the development environment. C++ apps are typically less stable. Minecraft's problems come from a lack of professional developers working at Mojang. They need people with more than just modding backgrounds.
Ok Microsoft. The last time you attempted a good business move it was when you bought Rare for some million. We all see what a shell of its former self Rare became. Don't mess this up 12 years and 2.5 billion later. I hope their goal isn't to destroy the PC and ps4 minecraft, while enhancing the xbox version. We all know Xbox one is in last place vs the wii u and ps4 which is in first. The same EXACT thing they did when buying Rare from Nintendo.
As long as no one is surprised the day you boot up minecraft and your mods no longer work...
This isn't going to happen to me, that's for sure; I seriously doubt they can somehow wipe out my MCP installation, when it isn't even "installed" like other programs (and has backups) and Minecraft doesn't have any form of online activation that I can see other than the launcher itself. Not to mention it doesn't try to log in or access their servers either, especially since I modded it to not try to use online skins (as I play singleplayer that doesn't matter; I also modded it to use my username as the default). Indeed, the game is started from a simple batch file without any launcher at all; actually, you can make your own batch file to bypass the launcher without messing around with MCP; and of course, there are cracked launchers (IMO if you already bought the game using a cracked copy isn't illegal, so long as you don't hack with it or distribute the game files).
In fact, maybe I can post how to mod MCP to use a custom username and custom skin (it will get your skin online, as long as it can do so, but that may eventually no longer work); I don't think that is illegal in any way (as long as MCP itself is still available from their own site, and even then you need the game files from a paid account) and as far as I know you can only play singleplayer, which is legally exempt from any future changes to the EULA, as they even say in the current EULA (see the second paragraph under "general stuff" at the bottom).
Maxis who was bought out by EA, and funded made the SIMS 4 the WORST game ever, literally back stepping everything all the way back to The Sims having less functionality than the first launch title.
EA bought Maxis in 1997, 3 years before the *first* Sims came out. EA - and MS - can and have made some excellent games. EA has recently gone off the deep end with games that are crippled without $$ expansions and DLC. MS, though, has been pretty reasonable with Xbox Minecraft - most of the addons cost money, but the prices are pretty reasonable. I can live with paying a buck for a texture pack.
A disaster is possible, but far from certain.

Geographicraft (formerly Climate Control) - Control climate, ocean, and land sizes; stop chunk walls; put modded biomes into Default worlds, and more!
RTG plus - All the beautiful terrain of RTG, plus varied and beautiful trees and forests.
"C# is just a lower quality version of Java. And you'll get a lot less mods, since you have to pay big bucks for the development environment. C++ apps are typically less stable."
I've been developing software and operating systems for 30 years. Any programming language has issues. It's all dependent on the skill level of the programmer.
That's not quite true... C# is free thru Visual Studio. C++ is very bad at garbage collection and is very easy to write poor code. Java has issues also.
The latest version of Java is quite speedy on all platforms. But to keep that speed when developing graphics intensive apps requires some specialized skills and intimate knowledge of the mechanics of the language. That sort of skill set is hard to find.
This is not a notch downer (more power to him to follow his dreams / ambitions) but the guy created Minecraft and whether he liked the popularity or not he was the creator, owned 70% of mojang and was (by default) the Shepard of this product.
As the acting “Shepard” of Minecraft and its brand “selling out” to Microsoft is deeply disappointing IMHO (again, I’m not attacking Notch, I’m speaking more generally about the product, creator, company and decision.)
Here were some other options instead of selling to Microsoft?
Open source the product or other less restrictive licensing model (there’s plenty to choose from)
Pass the baton to the other founders
Sell the company to someone other than Microsoft (Bungie?)
… probably some other options I’m missing
Why is the “sell out” to Microsoft so disturbing? I would say 50/50 chance they kill it. Not on purpose btw, they’re just that big and bureaucratic; left hand doesn’t have a clue what the right hand is doing. Look no farther than their latest bungle, the “Xbox Entertainment Studios.” But Microsoft exploits are well documented.
This is an utter outrage. I've been here since the absolute beginning of Minecraft, and Notch was always there saying he was never going to sell out. Now everything over the past few months has completely tarnished the "Indie" image, and reputation of the entire community. Way to be a hypocrite Notch.
I don't know if anyone else has mentioned this, but what with the earlier versions of Minecraft having a WRITTEN promise to Open Source the game, perhaps this is a legally actionable thing? IE: Could the Minecraft community SUE Mojang, Microsoft and the founders for reneging on a written promise (Also known as a contract)? Could such a suit nullify the deal and force Notch and the other founders to "give the money back"? Might be worth pursuing. If I was a lawyer, which I am not.
You know who is going to kill the modding community? The modders. I now count 3 big mods that have quit just based on the Microsoft deal alone. Nothing stated about what will happen. Just speculation and the hypothetical fear that "something" will change to kill Minecraft.
The deal Notch made with Microsoft isn't sad. This community's response is.

TheMasterCaver's First World - possibly the most caved-out world in Minecraft history - includes world download.
TheMasterCaver's World - my own version of Minecraft largely based on my views of how the game should have evolved since 1.6.4.
Why do I still play in 1.6.4?
