Or everyone can stop assuming things, no one knows what's going to happen, so everyone assumes the worst.
Everyone keeps coming up with how big companies buys small ones they kill game series' or they stop making good games...Minecraft isn't a series, they aren't making more games.
Funny how you say everyone can stop assuming things, just to jump to conclusions on the next sentence.
If minecraft dies, I personally blame it's own community for running it's self off. My experience is going to change because the community is acting like it is. Grow up, if something bad happens complain, until then why bother.
Yeah, grow up, don't be touched by anything, don't complain about what you think is wrong, don't express your concern, don't you dare to have an opinion!!!
You know some people, like me, think that minecraft being bought by microsoft is already a very bad thing on its own, microsoft's reputation isn't exactly that of the most consumer friendly company (Windows 8, GFWL, the initial release plans for the Xbox One... I could ramble about how unfriendly to the consumer microsoft is for an hour but that isn't the point, I don't think I need to get deeper into that...).
Vanilla minecraft players hopefully don't have too much to worry about, this might even be good for them!, but I definitely don't see this situation being any good for the modding community.
What guarantees us that they won't, say, make "Minecraft 2.0" a windows (8) exclusive ? alienating mac & linux players (and even their own players from older windows versions alike), or that they won't make player skins a commodity or some other for of monetization like paid DLC, or that they won't just stop modding support in the future... needless to say I DO NOT TRUST microsoft AT ALL, they are not a consumer friendly company and some modders have already left minecraft as soon they heard the news.
Don't get me wrong, mojang's approach towards modding wasn't always fantastic either, often pushing updates that broke almost everything while adding very little in terms of functionality to the game, promising to create an official API for modding that they have been delaying for years, but that seems like nothing in comparison to the possible prospect of things right now. I hope what I say is wrong and everything to continue just as it is, but I am not optimistic.
All of this useless speculation is just that, useless speculation. If you're 100% convinced that Microsoft will make Minecraft suck, then ANYTHING they do will make it suck as far as you're concerned. I'm just glad it wasn't bought out by an asian company like sega that would operate it under the premise of "Quality for asia, bad export for everyone else.". You know why I mention Sega? Because Microsoft cannot POSSIBLY ruin minecraft anywhere nearly as bad as Sega ruined the PSO series. In fact, the last game in that series to ever see the US was FUBARed so badly that Microsoft's Xbox360 version was the only one that actually worked consistently.
So yeah, wait and see what happens...and be REALLY thankful that the company that bought out Mojang wasn't japanese.

Even though I don't believe all the doom and gloom.
The one thing that would make more sense is that how long will it take Microsoft to dump curse? Not withstanding any sort of contract for the whole we will host your forums, mods, etc.. Pretty sure Minecraft is curses biggest asset. And losing that might be a few nervous Curse people right now.

Almost makes you wonder how long this been in the works, and if this is the real reasons MineCon was delayed this year to next.

They probably won't do the model of cross fertilization from the community. They' wouldn't have bought it had they not already had ideas for what they want to do with it, and besides that isn't their usual model. Bad (projected) news: they'll probably try to milk it for maximum money, finding ways to sell expansion packs and such. Good (imaginary) news: they probably won't put it on Steam or take back what we've already got. So, 1.8 was the culmination. Wonder if Mojang knew this was coming and that's why they took so much care with this last update.
I completely understand why he did it. No problem there. As far as who he sold it to, I couldn't disagree with any one decision more.
Microsoft has a long and proud history of leeching it's customers, particularly in the gaming division. I would be more worried about what changes it would undergo but honestly the developers screwed it up pretty thoroughly already. The addition of hunger marked the beginning of a long line of mistakes with few successes. What was once a pure mining game is now full of superfluous aesthetics and functions.
It is so disappointing that Markus is also actively avoiding making any mainstream games. Minecraft proved that he is able to execute a clever yet simple idea. I blame the community for driving away such an innovative mind.
I'm going to have to disagree on the "just sitting back" part. The Minecraft Community is huge and honestly quite powerful at this point. I think that a few dozen million people have quite a voice, and if we all use that voice we can MAYBE, just maybe, shock Microsoft into realizing that if they mess this up, they are going to be making one of the biggest business mistakes in history.

This... scares me. On the Mojang websites, updates and news always sounded like a real, friendly, community oriented person was writing it. This just sounds like a robot with a creepy, "I'm going to eat your children" smile. Other than that though, This is kind of good news. I don't see MAC or Linux in that list though, or modders.
Nothing good is going to come of this. Microsoft has one more shot to fix Windows before it's a non-entity. If it crashes, now it takes Minecraft with it. I give them 50% odds. They're not good at customers.
If they survive, Minecraft is an indie game, released and sold with the promise that it would be released into the public domain. We've been betrayed by Notch and are getting ready to be screwed by Microsoft. A monster mega-corporation can't handle a game tailored to the wants and desires of customers. They think they determine what we want. It's over.
I do not think this is the end of Mojang or Minecraft, Microsoft buying this in my opinion could be a great thing. So long as they make smart decisions (which I think they will),
Microsoft has the team and the resources to fix bugs, supply Bukkit with a larger team to get things going, faster updates, etc.
I don't believe Microsoft will take down Mods, Videos, or anything else community ran honestly.
Moving on to the future of platforms Minecraft is currently on. Microsoft does not plan to remove platforms from Minecraft, so your Playstation is fine. Microsoft will however likely add a "Platinum" Minecraft available to Microsoft products, I doubt it will include many unfair features or anything over the top. So no worries, Microsoft may just have some minor special features for their products, which in my opinion, is fair and fine.
Microsoft isn't stupid, they know Minecraft is big due to their community. And I doubt they'll release tons of DLCs to drain money from us. The future of Minecraft will likely stay practically the same as it is now, with a few improvements.

Minecraft was an indie game. Indie means independent of any corporation or other large groups funded by big business. It became a huge business, plus partnering with mojang, inevitably loosing its indie status.
As for Notch's promise we can only hope that it was included in the paperwork somewhere. Honestly I feel that if Markus was wanting to follow through on his word he would have released it now. This was the time for him to do so. Although if he did it would mean the eventual shutdown of the account interface and a whole host of problems for servers.
The amount of times he's attacked and moaned about microsoft and their ideas and business style.. then he sells out to them of all companies.
HYPOCRITE!!
Practically every small company talked trash about big companies before they went big. It's no surprise Notch did as well. Plus he's gotten to know Microsoft over the years making deals with them, things change. They've become a good partner for Mojang, so they fit the company quite well.

The timing of this is my biggest concern. The question is, what will this mean for Sponge (which was suppose to be the new bukkit)? Who would want to go through the effort of re-writing Bukkit, if Minecraft 1 is now done? It's a shame we couldn't have gotten a final 1.8 craftbukkit release before it got DCMAed. I'd be fine with just sticking to that version (assuming MS will even continue to support logins for it).
If they had to sell it to a big developer, I could have lived with Valve. They support Linux and OpenGL games. Microsoft will kill this game if server operators have to buy a copy of windows, just to host it. Notch was already rich. I can understand saying yes if approached, given the amounts involved, but actively courting Microsoft (so soon after complaining about FBs creepiness) is just a textbook example of selling out. As much as I was upset over the FB acquisition, the Occulus Rift didn't need to be used and wouldn't have hurt the game, whereas Microsoft has a long history of turning everything they touch into garbage.
I've posted this else where, but not sure it has been addressed, for those of us who brought the game in pre-alpha/alhpa there was a 'promise' I guess you could say, that future add-ons and expansions would be free to those customers.
"We will also change the license to remove the line that promises all future versions of the game for free. Please note that this change only affects people who buy the game after December 20, so if you got the game for during alpha, you will still get all future updates for free, despite this change. A promise is a promise. "
this was taken from the purchase page.
"Here's what you get: You never have to pay again! You get all future versions of the game, including all expansions and addons. You help fund the development of Minecraft Custom skins in multiplayer Once you've bought the game, it's yours. No DRM, you can do whatever you want with it. Survival mode!
Planned expansions: Zombie Siege Build your defenses during the day, fend off the incoming masses during night. Capture the Flag Defend your base and flag against the enemy team while trying to steal their flag. Various custom level mods Want to import a doom map? How about playing in a random dungeon? And more! "
it is incredibly vague and isn't truly defined, but I am only curious as I did buy it with this in mind. Would Microsoft still honor this if they create any additional add ons/expansions.
Guys, is 2.5 Billion Dollars, lets put it in perspective, is a 25 with 8 zeros on the back in pure US dollar cash, . You think a long lasting world tier company like Microsoft is gonna up a project with this much investment?
Lets look at this logically, they cannot add a subscription fee to this considering the agreement we have signed when we bought this game, so they can't really make any features that we have RIGHT now subscription based, however this doesn't' mean they can't add new features and making it monthly based. They announced that their main plan is to port Minecraft to more ports and base their sales off there, which seems fines considering the neglect Mojang have on other ports (although they should be neglected :P)
A change in coding from Java would actually improve the game, performance and the coding of Java is a pain in the ass and we can't expect a HUGE quality improvement if Microsoft were to work on this. While it might a bit shaky during the transition, it would prove extremely beneficial to the modding community in the long term. Also for those who say that Microsoft never supported open modding on games, i tend to disagree considering the support they provided when they acquired Halo.

Whoa, I totally forgot about that being said... That'll be something that we'll need to address Microsoft with.

Microsoft has a long history of dumping tons of money into things and them up. How many people do you know, using a Microsoft phone? They only survive because of the lucrative corporate contracts for Windows and Office.
As for increasing ports AND moving away from Java, those two things contradict each other. Java is the reason we have Linux and iOS versions. You can compile once and run almost anywhere. Any move to C++ will tie the engine to DirectX, which will drastically reduce the number of platforms it will run on. And Java is hardly a PITA to code in. It's simplicity and all the free development tools are the reason we have so many different mods out there. The ability to decompile it, is the entire reason we have Bukkit.

I'm fairly certain that the intent here is not to keep on releasing free updates forever, but to come out with a Minecraft 2 (which won't have any such promises attached).
Playing devil's advocate here, this doesn't seem that bad.
1. No platforms except for maybe Linux will lose support.
2. Jeb will stay, and with Microsoft's funding, all the stuff like the Mod API (lol) might actually get made.
3. Mods aren't going anywhere. Microsoft would face a the likes of which has never been seen on the internet if they get rid of mods. Also, Microsoft might be working with modders and/or paying them for their mods to be added to the game. Probably not, but it's a possibility.
4. Microsoft already confirmed that Minecraft will continue to be updated, and updates will be free. No DLC crap.
5. Updates will be more frequent and better in quality now that Microsoft is funding it.

Timeless Modding is kinda dead but idk what to put here now
As long as Jeb is still the lead developer, I think he will keep those folks at Microsoft in line.
All this deal pretty much means is the "Mojang" logo will be replaced with a "Microsoft" logo, and we will get a faster, smoother game with more consistent updates.
What you people don't realize is, the folks at Mojang didn't get fired or anything. They have joined forces with Microsoft, so they have access to more powerful tools. (Say goodbye to Java, finally). Jeb, Dinnerbone, Grum and the crew are still going to be developing Minecraft. Very little is going to change.
