Tried to convince almost everyone I know in RL to play, even bought my girl the game - no success. No one likes it (but - of course - no one really took time to get into the game). Kinda sad, but what can I do....?
I'm right there with you, but everyone I know sees Minecraft as "That game my kids play on their X-Boxes." They just FAIL at seeing it as something an adult can play with, have fun with, be creative with, and do amazing things with. I've NEVER been able to convince any of my friends to join me in playing either.

I got banned from a server for being too old, the owner of the server said he was 14 and it was creep for me to play a kids game and banned me from their hub server.
Now I play on a server I hide my age and text like a kid, I have been looked for 25 and up server have not found any so far.

Bit in Bold is what worries me. No-one should have to change the way they behave - young or old to "Fit in". For one we already know it's not a "Kid's game" it appeals to all ages. Secondly he sounds like one of the immature teenagers. Your better off away from a server run by an insecure teenager.
Case in point, the server I currently play on. In a former town I was in (And on a previous server in the early days) I was good friends with two members, they just happened to be teenagers. Age was irreverent as we just got on. Once difference I guess is I only play pc, I don't have an x-box, never plan on getting one, so I don't have to listen to the stereotypical screaming over an x-box. (As defined by games like COD) Not saying all teenagers are like that of course, but you do get a small percentage, no matter how much people deny it, that do fit the stereotype.
I also guess I'm used to teenagers (13+ yrs) as I've run my own message board on another subject for the past [almost] 12 years.
Like Minecraft forums or interested in my world? Try My message board, it's better moderated because I run it directly and have run Internet message boards for 21+ years! Better software and I have much more control to keep the content more up to date. Free to join, 13 years+.
The thing about playing with adults is also that you do not need to think your words 3 times before talking, I mean I sometimes swear ( in italian ) hard or make adult jokes ( like mestrual or political jokes ), but when there are kids around one have always to check his own words bit by bit.
Once I was playing with some kids on my server, no swearing or adult jokes, my voice sound adult so at some point I hear in the background ( of teamspeak ) the mother of one of the kids playing with me screaming "who the hell are you talking too?" and then disconnect, never see that player again.
I have my own server and it's been griefed before, it's some what regulated, not by whitelist atm due to the UUID change thing, but I usually issue the URL. noone really ever goes on it except myself which is sad, but it's quite boring I guess. it's an all age server but never had much problem before the griefer.
32 year old checking in. Process consultant in the industry. Travel all over the world. I play minecraft all the time. Great way to kill some time in the airport or to relax after a long day of work.
Biggest problem I run into is most of my age group tends to run very vanilla servers. I love modding and playing on modded servers. I don't mind kids but we tend to play a very different game and so I just don't have as much in common with them.

I don't believe that age is just a number. It's an identifier that represents, in most cases, what a persons life experiences could be. The vast majority of people would probably giggle at someone slipping and falling into the snow. Generally, your average ten to twelve year old will not have much experience with paying a mortgage. That being said, I love all four of my children, three of which are teens. But, at times, they seem to lack some of the social graces that are needed to fit into an adult conversation. There are exceptions when it comes to the way teens play the game, but just the sheer number of teens that play Minecraft will probably mean that the bigger percentage of trolling and greifing will come from that side of the camp. So, "older" players may tend to avoid those possibilities and stick with their own crowd. Just a thought.
I'm 17, almost 18, but I guess it's close enough. It's not that everyone is younger that ruins the fun, but more like people acting immature in general. (which applies to kids a lot) I kind of got what yogurt was saying. Age is how many experiences you gain and maturity is how you act from those previously collected experiences. Some people may respond quick with maturity, some kind of and some don't even respond with it at all.
Same here, it seems like a large portion of kids playing Minecraft are immature. I know that I've always been a bit more mature then other people my age, which I'm really happy about. I guess I responded quickly.

You should really read these books if you're a fan of, well, reading.
I turned 60 (sixty) this year. Have played computer games since I could afford one (my first one was a commodore c64 in the early 1980s). Tried a Wii some times but never got into it. I have played MC since Alpha (Oct 2010). When I first tried MC, it was just like " that's just what I was looking for all my computer-gaming-life" (had a similar feeling when I tried "Civilization I" for the first time, but it was different with MC).
I still have one of my early (Alpha) worlds, even converted it to Anvil-Format, but have not used it for a looong time.
I think most players would call me a builder. But I almost never play creative mode. Part of my building style alway is to secure my buildings from hostile creatures. And a block of diamonds shoud not be just a click away. When I build something out of Lapis blocks, I have mined them.
Early on I tend to play on Easy. Later on I usually switch to Normal. I never tried to really develop my worlds on Hard from start. I try to survive without dying. Saying that, I mean I do not play like Direwolf20 in his LPs, dying a couple of times starving just like I do not care. But I have died in each of my worlds at least once (mostly of stupid reasons like hardware problems/software bugs, but sometimes out of to early engagement with to many endermen or just not recognizing a creeper closing in from behind).
All my World's names are = the world's seed.
Currently I am playing on 3 worlds:
1. A world named "1.9pre3" which I started when Beta 1.9pre3 was released. The biggest problem were alle the world generation changes being made since then. And I am playing with 1.6.4 right now. It is my biggest world with a lot of chunk edges. Some of the chunk generating edges I could handle in some way that they do not look "unnatural" anymore, but many still look kind of ugly. But: It also has some nice buildings in it: The St.Louis GatewayArch and a lot more.
2. A relatively new one created with 1.7 seed 4031384495743822299 found by pdx7 (link to forum entry). I hope it will not get chunk edges with 1.8. Among other things I am building a Cheops size pyramid there.
3. A world named DW20_TECH_MC164 based on the FTB mod pack by/for Direwolf20. I removed all the "magic" stuff from this modpack because I had a really bad experience with Thaumcraft on a world I put a lot work in. In that world Thaumcraft destroyed all I created by spreading "Taint" even thow I never actually created "bad Flux". Even thow I like most of the concepts created with Thaumcraft, I will not again risk months of building to an outbreak of "taint".
I never played on a server with other players but I think I'd like to try that.
So If anybody running a whitelisted server is willing to invite me, I may give it a try. BTW: I'm German.
49 here. Supposedly Minecraft is mostly for 10-14 year olds, but if my son, his friends, and my nieces and nephews are any indication, they're not playing the same Minecraft I do. They play short-term worlds, basically creative; sometimes building things and sometimes various PvP challenges. I play long-term survival games, often hardcore, with plans evolving over months and they have a total of zero interest in that kind of thing. Closest to my mindset is my 10yo niece who's something of a roleplayer and invited us over for a barbeque in her new (Minecraft) house on our last visit.
I can certainly see why most people, viewing some tweens doing a cannon fire contest, would think of Minecraft as a kiddie game when it actually allows a wide variety of styles. IMO the skills many adult styles of Minecrafting demand are far more adult than those demanded by most "adult" games like the bloody FPS shooters. Planning, aesthetics, long-term cooperative work, story development, world development - these are very adult activities. The ease of griefing serves to hide adult play - you wouldn't really want to play Minecraft adult-style without a very tight whitelist, and that means not too much public exposure.
Creating significant mods for Minecraft is also a big part of my enjoyment and that's something else only a very exceptional 12 yo is going to do. It's a specialty activity with adults too, but less so. And although the mostly-adult modder community is not all that large numerically, it's got a big influence on the game.

I wager that I'm more mature than many people that are older than me. I honestly have no idea what creates the stereotype of 10-15 year olds being immature. I play heavily modded Minecraft primarilly, but occasionally play Vanilla.
I enjoy long term projects. I also play Kerbal Space Program, where I maintain the Kerbal Universe 2 mod. In addition, I play Planetside 2, but dislike it's lack of metagame and sophistication.
I do not play on any server that actively discriminates against people under 18, seeing as this discrimination is based on the terrible etiquette of most people in my age group. However, the terrible etiquette of my peers does not mean that some 10-15 year olds are not capable of functioning on a higher or the same level as an adult.
Instead of age requirements, server join requirements should be based on pure maturity, rationality, and the ability of the applicant to demonstrate mature thinking skills. Improper grammar or spelling, use of "txtspeak" or "netspeak", and easily proven immaturity or "copying off of Wikipedia" should be an instantaneous denial.

I'll wager you are too. Mature people can come very young. But they're pretty rare in that age group. I do have to agree that strict age limits aren't a good approach - especially given how easy it is to slum as something other than what you are on the internet, and the fact that nasty griefers and trolls can be found in any age group.

Poor grammar, sentence fragments, and "netspeak" doesn't bother me. It's not about isolating an age group so much as improving my odds against impatient behavior, lack of life experience, and the fact that the vast majority of teens will not be fans of Led Zeppelin. Jokes aside, it's safe to assume that each of us are slightly different in regards to standard behavior as it applies to online gaming. For me, the cut happens around 25 years of age, of course there are going to be exceptions but it takes so long to find them in a Mindcraft setting. Not all teens are "squeekers" and trust me, not all 40 year olds fall under the mature category.
