What are they trying to do? Destroy there own game? If Mojang gets ride of the donator perks and things like that almost all of the major servers out there will plummet and die. You may think that your making it a funner more fair place for everyone which may be true but now all the good servers will have no efficient way of making money. And making people have pay to join might be a way of fixing that but that's not making every one equal by making it fun for everyone, that's just making it were all the non donators are gone.
Before: donators have fun winning and non donators have fun trying to win and even winning too.
After: donators have fun winning but less fun because of less players and non donators are wiped off the server.
If you do this all of us players who like playing servers for free will stop likeing Minecraft because we cant do anything, and then only people who record or people that are willing to empty there wallets will play Minecraft. Even then the people who record will make less money because people only watch them if they like the game.
One of the most important things for a business to know is that if you want money you got to make it without money in mind. Minecraft looks like its starting to forget this. Proof of this is also with Bungie. They made halo for fun and put fun things in it like easter eggs and what do you know its tied up at number one game. and then right when they left halo we find that halo 4 was disappointing to all the halo fans. Why? because it was no longer made for fun but for money.
Umm one quit thing to add is that if they succesfuly make this law minecraft will be nothing ythey will lose all the respect and players and minecraft will probatly have no one playing on it anymore so pretty much take donations away = good bye Minecraft
Woah woah woah, a representative of mojang calling others 'retard' ? Now this gives me a real reason to promote to others not to listen to mojang if that is how one of their employees has to act
Man, everyone's gonna take a huge hit from this. I don't like pay-to-win, but it's better than pay-to-play. At least in pay-to-win servers, I can still lose for free.
This is stupid. The EULA license for any game is stupid. If someone starts a free-to-play server, it shouldn't matter. Paying for things like ranks, etc. is stupid. I might not fully understand what this is, but I did quite a bit of research on it.
After doing some more research on the topic, I'd like to point something out.
Mojang aren't adding this to the EULA, it's always been there, this whole announcement thing is simply because they're re-wording it to make it more clear. They're not shooting themselves in the foot, if anything they did that when they first wrote the EULA.

See I know that Mojang is mostly going after the big servers (Shotbow, Mineplex, ect) with this one, and I'm okay with them killing out the monetizing servers, but here's my problem and I don't think anyones looked at it from this angle yet:
How are the Serverhosts going to be affected?
Think about it, if massive servers that take a lot of space (and ergo make a lot of money) for serverhosts like Creeperhost for example go down in the aftermath of this, they will still need to make enough money to pay for all that space and other expenses that businesses generally make. The question will be, where are they going to get it? Not enough small servers will pop up to take over, because people will be too frightened by the Big Bad Mojang Legal Division to make a server.
The Answer: The small servers
This change is going to cause small servers who may not be breaking the EULA agreement to have their monthly bills skyrocket just so businesses like CH can keep their budget inline. Mojang is going to put a lot of servers out of business that aren't affected by this change, or force other servers to break the EULA in order to pay the massive overhead.
So yeah, I think this is just a big case of "Good idea, bad execution"
Personally I don't agree with the way they (Mojang) are handling this but it is time to prune servers such as gotpvp.com from the minecraft community! They have a pay-2-win scheme an example is that if you want access to the /back command on the server you would have to play for a donor rank, it doesn't just stop on that factions server they have but its pay-2-win for all of their serves they run.
I've been playing minecraft for years. Ive played it singleplayer and multiplayer, and Ive loved it all the way through, but if this update changes what it is supposed to change, this will be the worst update Mojang has ever conceived. I see what everyone is saying about Mojang's ability to regulate the server's, but all in all this is a terrible update. Most big-name servers wont be able to stand up without their current system through this without drawing a lot of criticism from users, or from Mojang themselves. I know Mojang has the right to control servers who use their client, but they are doing a terrible job of it. Running a server, especially a high-user server takes money, creativity, and time... lots and lots of time; and time is money. 99% of macro servers use features where you pay for a certain part of the server, and this is brilliant, you can play and have fun, but you can fund the server if you want and gain an advantage, or perks at the same time. Hypixel's server is a great example. I play on that server and am a free user. I have considered donating to get perks, but decided against it because I don't think I have the money to spend, but if it wasn't for the perks, i wouldn't even consider it at all. Hypixel has no way to support such huge growth they have had in their development of minigames, maps, lobbies, or just the money it costs to run a server from only donations, ads, or cosmetic payments. If Hypixel complies with this update, then they will probably suspend their development, slow it down to a point of almost non existence, or, at worst, shrink or disband their server. The same thing will happen to the Hive server and many others. Mojang has a valid point when they say that they don't want servers over-charging users. They don't want it to be "pay to win," but I don't think this is really a problem. There are over 100,000 servers out there; people do not have a problem finding one that they can play fairly on for free. If they join one that they cant play fairly on for free, they can and do leave, and it becomes basically a paid server because all who remain are paid users. Most large servers you can play fairly on free-to-play: this is a very tiny problem. By eliminating a small problem, they will create an even-bigger one. Well, this is my rant of they day.

This is such a terrible EULA. Mojang might as well delete this! This makes both the player and host, as well as server hosting companies suffer. The player will now be forced to pay-to-play without being able to try out a server [even for a limited time], hosts won't get any money because not many people will "pay" to keep their server running without getting rewards, and the hosting companies won't be getting very many servers as they were before. Donating wouldn't even be considered if it weren't for the rewards. And in just about every server you can play fine without paying, it's just it's a lot faster to just pay (just like in things like iPhone apps). This is a terrible update.
I said it was one reason, not the only reason. Customer support getting clogged is a symptom, but in the end, what's happening on a larger scale is, the game is gaining the reputation of a "pay to win" phone game. Most parents don't keep up with this stuff, and if that is their first impression of the game, the game suffers for it.
I get what your saying and it makes me mad because if the kids are spending too much the parents need to put some limits and stuff to keep them from buying so much not blame the game and now i'm worried about servers i like to play on close.

So you prefer more restrictive EULA? One that says you can't charge for anything at all? That makes total sense.

What EULA did you read? The updated one I read in no way prevents free trials.
No one with any imagination will have any trouble coming up with ways to entice paying customers without breaking the EULA.
My favorite Idea so far is a pair of servers, one that is 100% free, and one that 100% paying customers (with and optional free 1 week trial). The free server has all the same _permanent_ content, but the map on the free server is reset (or copied over from the pay-to-play server) once a month. This means that free players get a server to play on, but all new construction and such on the free server only lasts for a month.
There are also lots of people that plan to just switch to the donation model with periodic fun raising events. All players participate in the events, but only donating members get a vote on what the next event will be. Since every can participate, this should be completely compatible with the EULA.

I still have one question about this... Can players buy stuff with in-game currency as long as players can ear it through the game(ie. selling diamonds/completing tasks)?

Also, in my opinion, if your going to take away most ways players donate then they should take away pay-to-host websites and make them all free because when they take away the reasons most players donate server income will lower causing them to no longer be able to pay their hosting bill and eventually either go into debt or stop running the server... Even the hypixel server is eventually going to die which end almost every player's love for minecraft ending the game... PERMENATELY!!!!!!

having /back is hardly pay to win.
