Does anyone else think Mojang is turning into a socialist company that doesn't want anyone else to utilize their game? I think that after Realms kicks off, they'll eventually put in so many regulations, that servers will die off. I wouldn't be surprised if they banned Bukkit and other plug-ins that aren't there own making eventually...
Banned plugins? Then why are they working for the API that is supposed to make the life of modders easier? They know the direction of their game and it so happen it is the opposite for most people who thinks minecraft is theirs. Huge public servers dying off? Maybe. Small private servers dying off? Never.
I'm sure you can do a fun survival even with 10+ with the right mods in it. You don't need 100 people online to have fun because those 100 people, for the most part, are just hiding somewhere in the map and you will encounter players mostly in smaller groups. Heck, I had fun with only me and a friend playing vanilla survival and no one else in it.
It's not a matter of having fun with smaller numbers of people, on minigame servers it becomes boring to play with the same people over and over again. Large servers, like Hypixel who has thousands of slots, allow you to play with many different people, meet new friends, and have a different experience each game. You cannot do that with servers limited to 100 people, end of story.

If the additions you add to your server are balanced enough, I highly doubt Mojang will come after you, honestly.
Companies have to take a hard line when it comes to issues like this in their EULA's, because otherwise the line between what is exploitation and not becomes difficult to draw.
If you do choose to continue selling advantages, just know that you are skating on thin ice. Hopefully they will continue to take things on a case by case basis and only go after the worst offenders.
These change won't come without consequences. Some servers are out of control, I agree. There are some disgusting, money-grubbing servers out there that have been there for the money since the beginning - but this is going to affect every server, and will outright destroy the servers that are NOT just there for the money, and will break large servers, that hundreds of thousands of players - including a lot of you people reading this play on. So yes, cheer now for the death of hypixel, for the destruction of mineplex and the annihilation of shotbow (pun intended) but realize that any minigames you play now won't have more than 50 people on them at a time. Realize that though there may be no more pay-to-wins, that there will be no more of a LOT of other servers too.

Regardless of my opinion on the issue, I have a feeling you are dead on. I think part of this is to protect themselves from the *expletive deleted* server ops out there who are doing the whole "Buy a Diamond Sword of awesomeness for $500US." But they can't really appear to play favorites. While I think what they are doing is good and appropriate, the realist in me also knows that most likely they will be lax in enforcing this on servers that don't cross the line from small benefits for money to Zynga-esque *expletive deleted*hattery.
I don't understand how people disagree with this. They arn't EA, the people running the pay to win servers are.
Does anyone know what EA is? A pay to win company. What do you get in a server if you pay? Win! Diamonds everywhere! Advantages!
Extra awesome characters! If you are not, guess what? Prepare to work your **** off to get it! That is EA. Mojang is like the Anti - EA.
I understand that yes - people need money - but I want to direct everyone's attension to good 'ole Team Fortress 2.
Hats. ♥♥♥♥ing hats everywhere. Cosmetic. They've been doing this for a long time.

Sorry Mojang, but you have gone too far.
This is the biggest hit to server owners and I will be amazed if 10% of the current servers manage to live thought these changes.
You know Mojang? Some people make a lving out of their servers.
Let me tell you, as a co-owner, people won't just donate for nothing but colours to keep the server alive.
My two cents are this: People from the Minecraft Community, vanilla or modded, open your eyes and realize that servers won't live enough for you to play if people do not feel encouraged to donate. Stand up, make polite complains and make sure Mojang listens to us, cause a lot of the gaming industry lives on that preset: Sometimes, with enough help, companies DO listen at their communities.
I'll be giving the news to my server members and staff sadly while I hope against hope that this EULA changes are removed or changed in the near future.
If not, GG Mojang. It was nice knowing ya while you cared about us.
I have given up on repeating myself: Without SOME sort of compensatory practice (in-game items of some sort) donations will drop. Then servers will die. Then people will stop playing. Then...Well RIP Minecraft, probably.

If they just let people have rank perks like kits and stuff, but demanded owners to emphasize more on how they can get support for purchases from them. This wouldn't of been an issue of servers would of just did that.
1) Let's say you have /kit starter available for everyone. When they use it, it has a cooldown before they are able to use it again. Are you able to charge hard currency in order for them to bypass the cooldown time?
2) Pixelmon. Does this make it where if they wish to sell a legendary "Pixelmon" for hard currency on their website, are they allowed to do so as long as the "Pixelmon" has a CHANCE of spawning in the wild on the server?

To go along with this a bit, what's going on with Minecraft here would be like if the US government decided to ban free to play games in America. Of course it's different because Mojang can technically do what they're doing here and the US government probably can't ban pay to win games, but...similar, right? Telling everybody they can't do business a certain way, even though playing free to play games or pay to win servers is completely optional.
Not at all. This is like the US government shutting down Napster. They knew it was illegal, but then all of a sudden, they were shut down because the government started enforcing the law. What happened next? Apple started selling music online, and now there hundreds of great options to legally get you music online.

How do you figure that? Napster was one service. There are thousands of minecraft servers.
If it really is their intent to go after every joe schmoe selling +1 meter jump bonuses for $5/month donations, they will quickly learn that it isn't worth the effort. Their time is much better spent going after people that are actually abusing the system.
They can prevent your server from utilizing the authentication servers.
They'll probably not go after the smaller servers till they become something that matters.
Instead of telling Mojang to screw off, maybe you guys should come up with some solutions to get donations.
Honestly, just charge for a minigames server once a month for like 4.99 if you have a big playerbase, add cosmetics you can buy ingame, pets, etc., and you're set.
They wont... if you read Notch's interview with some reporter that private mailed him, he was just a complete **** and did not even make it seem like he cared for the community... With notch's support gone, we will not have minecraft OR no more fun servers with special things anymore. R.I.P. to the good minecraft days...
Exactly! Notch doesn't care about Minecraft anymore, so instead of leaving it alone he decides to be a jerk and make things WORSE!
That is pay-to-win by the very definition. I'm glad they're going to be shutting servers like that down. I've never seen a pay-to-win server that was worth a damn anyway, and I've strolled across too many for my liking.
Really? First, please read everything I posted, not just that section!
Secondly, it ISN'T pay-to-win! I played for over a year without donating, and won hundreds of times! There is stuff in the game that you can earn (like gems, which you can use to get classes), those classes everyone can get, and you CAN'T buy gems! The only things you can buy is VIP, PRO, LEGENDARY, and a few VIP classes (which some aren't even that good)
I bought VIP solely to support the community of the server, as there isn't much it adds! So if that is somehow pay-to-win (which it isn't, as some free classes are better than some VIP classes), then every server should be shut down by those standards!
Either way, I bet every good server will close now, as that is how they get their income!!!!!!!

I cannot express how happy I am about this! Instead of selling individual parts of the game for obscene amounts of money servers might actually have to start running a fair and balanced way to play, instead of putting down ten bucks and then owning everyone in PvP or whatever. Honestly, this has got to be one of the most amazing things to happen legally with Minecraft since it went up on the consoles. It's actually kind of sad that they had to do this in the first place because why would you pay to get diamond armor when it would be so much simpler and more satisfying to go do it yourself, I just wish they would have done this sooner.

Now you see, I would love to see these questions asked without the horrible bias and answered.
This really is poor journalism (lazy, in particular), and certainly not what I would have expected from Polygon. The loaded questions are simply shameful.

I tried to "un-load" the questions:
What do you think about the blog posts and efforts to explain Mojang's actions?
Some people think that changing this policy so late into Minecraft's life is unfair. Just as many disagree. What do you think about policy changes on a game that has been out for so many years?
What caused you to make this change in policy?
How do you think some servers, which have previously thrived on the old policies, will react? Do you think they'll be alright after the change?
What different advice would you give to new servers as well as old servers to make for a more smooth transition into this new policy?
EDIT
I studied this kind of bias in my AP statistics course, it's called wording bias in which the question either hints at a correct answer or is worded in some way to influence the answer. If I were to say, "What do you think about the scumbags at Nintendo ruining the smash bros series, and making another one just for money?". This question is wording bias because it calls the people at Nintendo scumbags (not true), says that they are ruining the series (not true imo), and that their only motivation is money (I hope not true). The question is worded so that when you hear it you want to agree with it; it's almost as if it's a rhetorical question because it so heavily implies the answer. Every question this guy from Polygon asks has wording bias.
It insinuates people don't understand Mojang's motivation and that the blog posts aren't really helping
It is essentially a statment asking Notch to affirm that the policy changes are unfair.
He uses a non-sequitur fallacy in an attempt to create the premise that the servers are a 'valuable part of the ecosystem' and they 'need' the 'pay-to-win funcionality to survive'. Then he uses bandwagon appeal saying that 'people enjoy them' then a non-sequitur again saying that since people enjoy them, they should be left alone
This question is literally littered with non-sequiturs, ad hominems, false assumptions. I could write a whole paper on how ty and loaded this single question is.
It insinuated that others think servers can't thrive, and by asking for his advice, it also implies that the servers are in need of advice because since the policy change things have gone to hell. Fallacies I use above explained: non-sequitur = an illogical conclusion: The drug on wars has failed therefore we should make all drugs legal Ad-Hominem = name calling: The policy changes made by that Notch are totally out of line Bandwagon appeal = everyone is doing it so why aren't you?: Dude, everyone is voting for Reagan, why aren't you? Then Notch comes along and answers the unloaded questions from above
These are questions I don't mind answering, and if anyone is curious:
What do you think about the blog posts and efforts to explain Mojang's actions?
I was hoping it would calm things down, but it seems to just have made things worse. People less stressed than me tell me this doesn't have to be a bad thing. Hopefully we can reach some better results now that it's being talked about instead of people breaking the rules in silence.
Some people think that changing this policy so late into Minecraft's life is unfair. Just as many disagree. What do you think about policy changes on a game that has been out for so many years?
For the last several years, these have been the rules. People didn't realize or chose to ignore that they were building the businesses around something that breaks the rules. The "new rules" we've added adds new ways for people to be able to run legitimate servers and still make money, for the people who want to not break the rules. Hopefully this includes all big companies.
What caused you to make this change in policy?
First of all, people think we changed the rules to make them worse. We didn't. There were some way more lenient rules back in alpha when I was working alone, but that changed a long time ago into the too restrictive rules we had up until recently. The changes we made were all allowing people to monetize. Just how we think streaming and youtube are important for the community, we think running a server is something important that we want to allow, and the changes only happened because this got discussed.
How do you think some servers, which have previously thrived on the old policies, will react? Do you think they'll be alright after the change?
I feel sorry for the ones to based their business around something we don't want Minecraft to become (ie a game where you pay for gameplay). Unfortunately, these were the rules since before they started their business, and hopefully they will be able to transition into something in line we don't disallow. My gut feeling is that most should be able to survive the changeover.
What different advice would you give to new servers as well as old servers to make for a more smooth transition into this new policy?
This is very difficult to give a general response to, as all servers have different setups. Perhaps "talk to your players". I would appreciate not telling the players that there are new rules, though.
I have posted the notch questionnaire three times in this thread and no one took notice... Then people make speculations based on polygon's bias questions.....
