I hope this whole paid server thing doesn't get abused too much. Knowing people however, when the option is available, I'll just hope that my favorite servers don't become extremely expensive. I dislike MMOs for the monthly subscription thing and other reasons.

If Mojang just made a clear and direct statement a little over a week ago or so we wouldn't need to talk about this still. They need to be direct and get it over with. Instead for the past week/two weeks they've been giving mixed messages and having to go back and clear it up. This is horrible.
What part of this don't you understand? They couldn't have made their intentions any easier to understand here. Pretty soon it will be translated into legal-speak and implemented in a new EULA.
Understanding this isn't the problem. The problem is that you just don't like it.
It's really great of Mojang to come forward and clear these things up for those who didn't understand it. They still remain the coolest video game developer to ever exist.
If you are going to view Mojang in a negative light based on unsupported speculation, then that is your problem.
My speculation is supported by causality logic. Realms comes out. Realms makes pretty much 0 dollars. Mojang says, "Hey, no more servers!" This is pretty much what they are doing, at least that is my perception of reality. Minecraft Servers, no matter how good, aren't good enough to survive purely off pre-teen and adolescent good will.
Also, people keep saying it isn't a donation. Haven't you heard of a "donation incentive? I've donated $16 to a server I like. Was it for the stuff? It really isn't for Mojang to say, as motives are too nebulous to be directly defined in a EULA.
Yes, because kitpvp will always be better over a non-p2w pvp server.... *sarcasm*
Better than a non-existing server.
Personally I think this is a REALLY good thing!! Thank you Mojang! I really like the idea of equality on all servers! I was seriously getting upset and sick of the pay-to-win aspect on servers, especially KitPvP. Seriously, it's really annoying that there are donators with god kits running around, destroying everyone but each other on all servers. So glad it's about to change! Can't wait, so excited!! Thank you once again Mojang.
How is this good? Now servers like Mineplex or The Nexus will probably charge you in order to just go on. Kits will be free, but you'll still have to pay to play the mini-games in the first place. It was better before because you didn't have to pay.

Exactly! But hey, You have to admit that spending money on this GAME is kinda pointless...I don't have any room to talk tho because I have donated before, but to a server with youtubers on it (as in the Nexus).
and if servers go pay to enter, a good few of us wont be using any of them. not becasue we dont WANT to pay. but becasue we have NO WAY TO.
i can only play certain subscribe mmo's becasue i can go into a GAME store and buy a timecard.
i can only buy games on steam, becasue i can go to GAME and buy some steampoints directly from them.
same goes for xbox and psn and nintendo e-shop.
i have cash. that is it. no credit, no debit, no paypal....nothing but little pieces of paper that are blessed by the treasury.
i know that i am not the only one. we do exist. we have only one way to pay for anything. and thats the the hard currency of our country.
i hope that one day, you too will find yourself in such a situation, and think back to now. and then know how it feels.
I have been in that situation. Most people are as kids, if at no other time. I managed when I needed to.
Chances are you know someone with a credit card, Paypal or some other means of paying. Hand them the cash you want to put towards the server and ask them to help make the actual payment. There's also prepaid debit cards and such you can get at the grocery store or gas station or just about anywhere. And worst case, ask the server owner if they have an address you could send the money to. Get a piece of paper, fold it around the cash, put it in the envelope and mail it. That's what everyone used to do in the past.
good for you, because your favorite PvP server might not be there much longer.
Then I'll throw money at it or offer my own resources to help out.
Not everyone has money to throw around but the majority of players could probably scrounge up a dollar or two to donate. If people aren't willing to pay a small subscription fee or simply give a donation but were willing to pay 2 or 3 figures for perks and kits, guess what? They don't really care about the server and never did, they just like having power and showing off. Any server that affords them that advantage would have been fine.

most of the big boys will still be there, becasue of How often am I allowed to charge players to access my server?
You can charge players as regularly as you like. You can even charge for timed access if you think it’s the best way to monetise your server.
this means the greedy ones will simply charge access by the hour. or maybe the minute?
play most of your time on a minigames server? the games last what, aprox 5-10 mins?
will you be happy paying $10 per minigame instead of donating or buying minigame kits?
and most people dont even see the difference between a creative server, a survival build server or the small nice ones out there like buisnesscraft?
if you are playing on a buisness server, your kits dont contain swords and armour. becasue you are not killing mobs or other players. you are trying to make a business.
and build servers that are in creative? they will go becasue of griefers. who will suddenly be able to do everything the regular and donator players can do.
Mojang didn't say there couldn't be a rank system that didn't use hard currency.
Mojang didn't ban a whitelist.
Mojang didn't ban a trust/time based rank system that didn't use hard currency.

It's good for a lot of reasons:
Pay-to-play servers will now compete on both price and quality.
This is a good thing. It will drive both the price down and quality up.
Servers can now accurately plan based on the number of subscriptions.
If you have loads of new players, then you simply upgrade your hosting plan to more slots. If you have less players, then you downgrade. They don't have to plan based on the percentage of players that will actually "donate".
No more having to create increasingly convoluted incentives to get players to donate.
Either you have enough paying players or you don't.
Here is where your 'logic' breaks down. Realms is actually doing quite well. When realms launched in NA, Mojang was surprised by the success of it to the point where they were worried that they were going to have trouble keeping up with the demand.

Tis far better to be a witty fool than a foolish wit.
players buying kits is what kept servers being competitive. Someone donates for some moderate armor you can just as easily you, you spend a few hours grinding for it.

A server that charges $10 per mini-game better be seriously amazing. Running a server is expensive, but not so expensive that good quality server can't get by with $1/mo. access fees.
That being said, I could see 2 types of servers emerging from this:
The first type, which charges roughly $1/mo. just to cover their running costs. They use free bukkit plugins and have a free enjin website. It's a decent server by most standards (ie. You could set it up yourself, maybe. It would take work, and you wouldn't have the experienced, trained staff or the player base, but you could do it)
The second type, which charges much more. Maybe they charge $5-10/mo., but they have custom plugins, and their server is run on a bungee cord network, complete with every style of gameplay you could want (ie. Unless you're a computer professional with Java experience, this is NOT something you could set up yourself).
Technically their doing what the police of the internet are telling them to, since I believe your required by law to have some type of EULA in your game
You know realm's wouldn't be to bad if you could hold more than 20 player's on the list and more than 10 player's on the realm's at one time. And more option's for customizing your realm's.
If a large group of people keep making a ton of false reports then maybe this BS will be removed.
It's not going to be removed, they will technically be violating the law if they do, besides that's not really good logic. People tend to falsely flag videos on youtube and flagging is still around, what makes EULA violation reports different?
1: I'm pretty sure it already is
2: Since its a Sony/Microsoft game, they get revenue to because it was sold on their console, so I don't see what your trying to say

Not so much angry as annoyed. Mojang, like I said are trying to be the internet police, trying to force realms on more and more people.
