LOL you really think that will keep any big server up let alone the giant 20,000 player servers? I once asked a owner of a non pay to win server who had 500 people daily (who by the way was honest and good to everybody) how many donations he usually got and he said 1 to 3 every few weeks and never over 20 bucks. Name 3 server over 1000 players that isn't pay to win. You can't. The big servers won't last more than 2 months. And the super huge mega servers? What's the saying? The bigger you are the harder you fall...
Look at Path of Exile, an MMORPG game that is NOT pay to win, they only sell visual features and I haven't ever heard them having problems with money to keep the servers up. If Minecraft servers do it right, provide a variety of cool visual enhancements for people for fair prices, people will buy them - who can't resist buying some shiny effects around their character?
Promoting donations and purchases in the right way is important, some knowledge of psychology and marketing help too. I think that's where the owner of mentioned non-p2w server fell short, I don't know the exact situation but a minigame server I used to be an admin on long time ago had about a fifth of those people, and it got about $540 per month.
I admit there was one, minor gameplay perk - two extra classes in one of the minigames, although those classes weren't made to give players an advantage, just additional variety to the game. Over a dozen other perks you could purchase were purely visual and we made sure they didn't affect the gameplay of minigames in any way.
People who bought the visual perks (+ the admins, who had all visual perks automatically) had fun with them in the lobby, which was basically free advertising - one of the reasons so many people bought these visual things, and the server was able to pay for itself. As I said, it's all about psychology and marketing - do it right, you survive ;).
Its not the new system that's a problem. Its the fact that Hypixel got let off and that's where most people are buying things anyway.. And if other servers get let off then when I finish my server I expect the same..
As far as I know, Hypixel is now adapting their purchasing system to not break the EULA.
I would agree that what Mojang is doing is not a good decision on their part. Free-to-play servers are one of the best parts about Minecraft, and the best way for owners to maintain them is with different types of passes. I firmly believe that the server owners are helping Mojang, not the other way around simply because multiplayer servers give new players a new reason to play the game. If the servers can't pay for themselves and go down, Mojang will lose a lot of potential customers.
But does Mojang have a right to do this? Absolutely! It's their game, their rules, and their money. The only part that the owner created was the Minecraft world, which probably doesn't really belong to them anyway.
Anyway, would YOU want people to make undeserved money off of your game that you put a lot of work into? I think not. Surprise, they're not the only people with this rule; thousands of other video games have this rule but their servers still allow donations, and when they say not to make money off their things, it means not to redistribute their files through the use of, say, AdFly links. Mods and servers would still be donatable to because Mojang didn't directly make them.
Even if it is the way you depict it to be, don't think of it as a bad thing: less and less servers will be forcing users to pay monthly fees to use certain blocks, items and entities.
I agree. Servers should not be allowed to make money.
Here's an EXTREMELY SIMPLE SOLUTION: Don't play on servers that offer p2w style "donations" or offer $1000 kits! The lack of activity alone on a server will surely cause it to crumble... It's truly not that hard to realize.
I agree. Servers should not be allowed to make money.
It's illegal to make profit from a server unless you carry a business license and have express written permission from Mojang. Other than that, donations are perfectly acceptable because that means that 100% of that money is going straight back into the server and NOT the owners pocket.
Other than that, I agree that people who have not gone through the legal process in their country as well as with Mojang, should not be allowed to make profit.
My server uses 150% of it's donation money. (Yes that 50% extra is my own pocket money going into it.) and that will never change unless I realistically require profit. An example of such requirement would be if I were a youtuber that was extremely popular that would require me to pay for dedicated developers for plugins or such expenses as the much higher cost per month than a typical 50 slot server.
This thread needs to be locked and deleted, it's spreading misinformation.
1. The EULA does NOT say that you cannot make money.
2. You're probably thinking of REALMS- you cannot use REALMS to make money.
3. The way the EULA was originally written, if enforced, would prohibit you from making any money (legally) even on a regular server. So they changed it slightly, to specifically ALLOW you to (legally) make money.. and set out what is and is not an acceptable method to charge players.
If you're hosting and managing a Minecraft server for any other reason to ultimately have fun, you didn't have very good intentions in the first place.
I for one as a server owner, have to agree with the rest of the people on this thread. If there is no donations, there is no server. The money for the bills has to come out of somewhere, and those bills are all what come together to make the server what it is, donations are not forced, they are completely and totally optional. The truth about the EULA is that, Mojang is not trying to force their hosting onto us, because their hosting is only meant to be used by a small group of players. Just because people think that Minecraft should be free for everyone, the greatest reason that people are unable to make a server is: money. You have to pay for server hosting, website hosting, webstore hosting, and web ads. Then later on there are all of the HR costs such as Developers, Builders, Artists, Advertisers, and all the other people that help your community come together. Passing this EULA will not kill Minecraft server completely, it will simply stop server owners from updating past 1.7.9. I also think, that if they pass this EULA, it will be broken over the next few months by such a vast amount of people that the shear number of cases will either cause them to change it again, ignore the cases there are, or to maybe release a final warning and then take the cases to court (which would take decades to get through all of the cases). So I petition against Mojang changing their EULA, and I hope they come to their senses and realize how this will affect their gaming community, and how much this will ruin their game. This EULA will completely change the community, and I for one want to see what would happen if they do change because someone out their will know how to get past the EULA's power.
First of all 90% of all the people i know who play minecraft play on servers. If there are no servers they wont want to play. They play all these weird server for all there minigames. Why would you want to take servers away. Heck they draw in hundreds of people to your game all because some little kids want have fun on a free to play server. See what i mean is donating is optional not forced. They choose if they want to donate or not. If you want start taking % of all servers profit then do so dont kill them out right. We understand if you want more money from your game. Its your game you made, you advertised, you managed but think of servers as another advertisement. All i hear from people who play minecraft is "What server you play on". What i am trying to say is there is no point for most of these people playing to play survival. You built this game off of multiplayer and everyone loves it that way. Why change it now all because some kids are spending money on server behind parents backs. Now Secondly think about buy crafts pov. They live off of servers then they all vanish Poof Gone Presto. People who are making a living off of this are going to go in det all because 3 years later you want to enforce the eula And you wonder why you getting so much hate. Thousands and Thousands of server have built up over the last 3 years to be crushed in weeks.
Let's just get a few things straight, shall we? I often see people mix two things - the content of the EULA, and enforcing it.
The EULA exists for a reason, it's there to create some rules for people. Enforcing these rules is extremely important, otherwise people will do whatever they want and the company will look silly. Mojang has full right in enforcing the EULA, it is a legal document you automatically agreed to when you bought the game. And there's nobody who can dictate Mojang to stop enforcing the EULA, and no amount of petitions or people who signed them. That's like telling a policeman to ignore the law.
Then there is the content. In the past, it used to say that making any money with the game was against the EULA, and therefore illegal. Then the YouTube monetization exception was added. And now a server exception was added too, which means that servers can now make money legally.
Now, if you want Mojang to change the EULA back, you're basically saying that they should revert the exception and make gaining money on servers illegal again. It's not Mojang who want to destroy servers, it's the users who tell Mojang to change the EULA back. I hope you are happy with yourself.
So, let's summarize it. You want Mojang to stop enforcing the EULA? Not gonna happen. You want Mojang to change the EULA? You will make it worse. The "servers can sell gameplay features" part was never in the EULA, and it is never going to be there, because that's what Mojang is fighting against, and they explained why they're doing so several times. They have a valid reason, they're not just doing it for fun!
Be glad that there are legal ways for servers to make money and stop acting like a little child who wants a toy. BUT I WANT THE TOY NOW!!! Stop, you look silly.
Basically to anyone who hasn't clued in yet Mojang isn't enforcing this, and they have no plans to enforce it.
Grum was threatening people over twitter for god knows what reason but it's been said by both him and Notch that it was just his opinion, not the opinion of Mojang.
The EULA has been like this for awhile, it's true, people are worried because Grum started threatening people with lawyers. Grum has no ability to send lawyers to you, and he won't. Mojang is not going to spend money enforcing, heck even Notch said this:
So really this thread doesn't need to exist anymore. It was fine when we thought this might change Minecraft forever but it should be clear to everybody now this has no impact on any of the big or small Minecraft servers.

They clarified and reinforced the original EULA. I hope it stays the way it is now.

This Eula will put down about 95% percent of servers , Im sure you don't want a majority of the servers to shut down.
Since when did 95% of servers rely on pay-to-win "donations" to stay afloat? I know the server I help manage survives on the owner's own pocket and genuine care for the server and wanting others to enjoy it.

Maybe, but until at least one big minecraft server violating the EULA gets shut down what I said is the truth.
Entitlement 101 everybody.
No, as that's covered by fair use. They can still receive ad revenue off of Minecraft videos.
