Well I guess every server I like is shutting down since I only play minigame PTW servers with anymore. Bye shotbow bye hipixel bye hive.

The viewpoints in this thread have been very interesting to read. We have many users who purchase servers for personal use, as well as some who use our service for their communities. I think parts of the EULA are still open to interpretation (i.e. vague), and it would help if Mojang could make some further clarifications.
This is like a second SOPA, I think Mojang's lawyers are forcing them to do it just cause realms came out. We need more support or else it'd be just like if SOPA was passed. I encourage people to find more supporters by shuffling through the Steam you probably have and getting some buddies to help. We need to show Mojang we care enough and hundreds of serves will be saved. Its not something we can shrug off. many people make their livelihoods of of server hosting. Not only are servers affected but our most important modders rely on donors to support themselves too! Please spread the word. More people means more servers saved! We also can't forget that a lot of our most important youtubers advertise merchandise for minecraft that aren't produced by Mojang. That means they lose their support too. If we let this go, all dedicated minecraftians are put at risk! Please help put a stop to this by grabbing more supporters.
I would say that I am deeply sorry that you can't just sit back and turn a videogame you did not develop, or its assets, into your livelihood by scamming kids out of their parents' money, but I hold no shred of empathy for those kind of people.
I completely agree.
Some people are whining that all servers are going to die out, but that's not true. The only servers that are going to suffer because of this are the ones who try to turn their server into a pay-to-win, despite them not owning the content that they're selling under the guise of "donations". I've been running a relatively small but decent server for over 2 years now and I've never once asked for "donations" for any reason. I run my own server using my own money because I genuinely enjoy it. Hopefully more servers will be run for similar reasons.
I still find it insane that anyone can backup Mojang on this.
From the start of Minecraft -- it's success is based on those who created content, be it youtube videos, maps, mods, or other content for the game.
I myself found minecraft through youtube videos, youtube videos that can no longer exist under the new EULA, (As you're making money off MINECRAFT gameplay footage).
Mojang is taking everything that has made this community into what it is today, and making it against the rules.
Sharing maps with an adf.ly link? Nope
Mod Makers getting a bit of income in return for their hours of work creating custom content? Nope
Servers being able to pay bills? (Get real, very few people will donate for nothing) Nope
Websites that provide seeds, and all that stuff with an ad on the site? Nope
Youtubers, Streamers, and other content producers that make money off ad revenue? Nope
This new EULA is essentially RUINING everything that this community has been founded on.
What some ppl here fail to realize is that Minecraft would never have made it out of the basement if not for community created content.
Before bukkit existed Minecraft was some game that only a select few ppl played, and begged their friends to play to no avail. Hmod showed up and gave ppl the abillity to customize the game to their liking, and all of a sudden it got a tiny bit more popular. Then as Hmod died a horrible death Bukkit shows up to save the day, and lo and behold. All of a sudden the game is a smash hit that everyone is buying, playing, and recommending to their friends.
How many ppl do you know that play MC play single player vanilla? How much of Mojangs content do you exclusivity use without the addition of user created content?
Mojang is only successful because the community made them successful. Without bukkit, spigot, forge, tekkit, ftb, etc, etc. There would be very few players playing today.

I ANNOUNCE THIS PETITION SIGNED!
This is in no way a second SOPA. There hasn't even been a EULA change for a long time. Every game ever does not allow the consumer ( i.e. ourselves ) to make money off of the game directly. I am willing to bet the majority of minecrafters play their own realms or their own servers with only their friends. I logged into one online server and saw that it allowed you to buy items and left instantly. Yes Mojang is out to make money on their own game. This is perfectly ok. They made it and whether we like it or not that they don't update as fast as we like that doesn't ever give us the right to make money off of it even if someone makes a mod that makes the game more fun. Now a modder should be able to have a website where their mod is hosted and you would be able to donate to that person to help keep their website running. This is the best way for modders to indulge their hobby and possibly make money off of it. It should never be your full time job unless you work for the company who made the game.
Livestreaming and youtube are their own ball of legal and grey areas to making money. I encourage live streamers it helps promote the game but many streamers say that you should never try to make it your living just do it for fun and if you manage to be able make a living off of it then go for it full time. Consumers are the biggest factor in something succeeding and I am sure Minecraft won't be going away anytime soon whether Mojang enforces this part of their EULA or not.
From the start of Minecraft -- it's success is based on those who created content, be it youtube videos, maps, mods, or other content for the game.
Yes and no. In my opinion those videos and maps and mods wouldn't be there without minecraft, and before those videos and maps there had to be some exposure to those people.
I do agree, though, that youtubers and mappers and modders and texturers (everyone) usually are a good general reason that minecraft is as big as it is.
It should also be noted that you can't really have a popular game like Minecraft without a community. It should be obvious that not many games would exist without their communities, not just Minecraft.
I myself found minecraft through youtube videos, youtube videos that can no longer exist under the new EULA, (As you're making money off MINECRAFT gameplay footage).
I, too, found myself with minecraft upon a video way back in 2011.
The difference with videos than mods and servers is that it is handled elsewhere. I know today that someone, don't remember if it was a mojanster or a forum moderator, but it was someone you expect to know and be correct, said that videos are handled in some other document (or of the sort) and youtubers aren't really affected by the "new" EULA. They can continue monetizing their videos, assuming it meets whatever the current terms require them to, at least.
Mojang is taking everything that has made this community into what it is today, and making it against the rules.
Servers aren't against the rules, resource packs aren't against the rules, mods aren't against the rules, maps aren't against the rules, the forums aren't against the rules, single player isn't against the rules, sharing your redstone creations isn't against the rules.
My point is they are taking away one thing, one thing. It may be the base of how a majority of minecraft servers keep themselves on their feet, but that one thing was already out in the first place, no one decided to act upon it though.
Nope
Mod makers and servers can still accept donations. While they cannot provide anything in return (as that would be considered a purchase) they can accept donations, as unlikely as it is.
I assume that mojang won't sue a website for providing seeds just because they have ads on their site. If mojang would like to go that far, they can. This is pretty much what was already happening, the only difference is mojang noticed, but still didn't act.
And, as I previously stated, youtubers (I assume this should also apply to streamers) have different terms and will most likely not be affected.
This new EULA is essentially RUINING everything that this community has been founded on.
No it is not. You are blowing this completely out of proportion. Yes, servers might go away, but that's up to mojang to decide if they want to do that. Even then, a few servers may be allowed to stay. I know that Hypixel's is going to stay strong and keep it's store, and who knows, Mojang might not even do anything to servers who are doing what they already do. It's up to mojang.

Ahh, summer break, the time of the year where I do nothing.
Good to know you just pulled that right out of the air.
There was nothing there except opinion. Of the 50 people I know that play minecraft maybe 10 have even tried an online server. That said there was no % values or claim to be correct data or anything else. My whole post and you attack my opinion as if I stated it as a fact. Cool.
From the start of Minecraft -- it's success is based on those who created content, be it youtube videos, maps, mods, or other content for the game.
None of which is affected by this change.
I myself found minecraft through youtube videos, youtube videos that can no longer exist under the new EULA, (As you're making money off MINECRAFT gameplay footage).
This is inaccurate. Making money off of Minecraft is not the same as making money off of derivative works. Mojang has already given explicit permission to allow individuals to make videos and art based on the game and receive ad revenue from it. This ONLY affects servers. and ONLY affects servers who are trying to sell in-game items.
Sharing maps with an adf.ly link? Nope
Mod Makers getting a bit of income in return for their hours of work creating custom content? Nope

This is all false FUD you are either spreading purposely to cloud the issue or through your own ignorance.
Good to know you just pulled that right out of the air.
I fall under that category, personally. I play SSP and run a private server on my machine for me and my friend. Never touched public servers, probably never will.
There will be no new mods, cause who wants to spend
hundreds of hours coding and doing other stuff just for fun...?
To my knowledge, thats what most modders do already. Mod for the fun of it! They can still make their mods and (hopefully, don't quote me on this, I'm not a lawyer) still let people download it though an adf.ly (or the alternative that should usually be given). Mod makers cannot sell their mods, that's all the EULA says they can't do.
Guys. I have found a loophole. They said you couldn't make profit. They never said that you couldn't sell things for what they're worth! But stuff on servers will cost like, $0.01 though.

I wonder why Sonic isn't really as popular as it was in the early 2000's. Maybe it was and Sonic 06 that ruined the series' reputation. Well, it one of the most WORST games I've ever played.
