A) A two-floor, rectangular house (generally 7x9 or 9x11) with an attic and a basement. Each floor is 5 blocks tall, including the floor for the above floor; that's 4 blocks of air per floor.
B.) Similar to above, but with the house forming one giant room and an extensive basement below. It's generally what I make when I feel like building with stone and wood, as I dislike extensive use of stone blocks in above-ground houses unless they are particularly large.

Did something happen to you in your childhood to give you this unreasonable fear of rutabaga?
You can see how I built my current base; it is all one floor with a main building and glass enclosed areas for a tree farm and a village:
My other worlds used the same basic layout of rooms, but in my previous world it had three floors (less room for a base) and in my first main world it was one floor with a basement for storage (built more hap-hazardly as it was the first world I made and was also built around a natural village/lake).

How I build my house depends on the specific game, and the biome it's in. For example, in a game where I was building in a desert, I built a home partially buried in a sand dune, and skylights for daylight. Another game I built a sprawling ranch house in the plains, with fenced fields and corralled animals around it. And right now, I have a game where I'm playing the tree spirit challange, so obviously my house is inside my tree. I do like to have about three blocks of air between floors, and nearly always make homes at least two floors tall. Usually taller, though some floors may be underground. I also like to have some kind of windows, and always a watersource somewhere.
Edited to add, sometimes I use stairs for roofs, sometimes I use half blocks for a shallower angle of the roof. Sometimes I make a flat roof, or have a house that's mostly underground. Depends on the house.
I normally build my house in a fairly flat area, and build it out of wooden planks with logs in the corner. Definitely has to have stairs as my roof. Normally 1 floor but occasionally 2 floors, and I love decorating the outside of my house more than the inside. Another Habit I have with my houses is to fit as many windows in the walls and to look nice.
That is my perfect house.

I usually like to build on ground and have just make a build similar to a real life house and when that's done with I like to create a town around it and have all the necessities (farm, etc). I don't like going over 3 floors because for me it just starts to look a bit weird. Although, other than that I LOVE building tree houses and having homes on a cliff or on the side of a mountain.
I like to have stairs or slab tiered roofing but also have a lookout area to climb up to and look for baddies/snipe.
Usually end up with 3 levels eventually, a basement for fire or tinkering, main floor with kitchen/dining and storage and upper living quarters with bathroom. This is the basic build for most of my houses, although they all change visually depending on materials available and where they are located and how I am feeling. Sometimes use slabs for roofs inside if not doubling floors (having one roof material and another material for next level above it)
How do you guys like to light your houses? I use glowstone, but it is hard to find in survival. I don't care for torches because it looks unprofessional and doesn't light as well (my personal opinion).

I use glowstone as well, and don't really have a problem finding enough (I get it as a byproduct while mining Nether quartz for XP, mining any easily accessible glowstone veins (by hand, so only get 3/4 back), and have several stacks left over once I'm done enchanting and building). I do use some torches for decoration though; otherwise I only (heh) use torches after the beginning to light up caves and mines.
I have a castle, with lava mote in case of visitors. Below that I have a massive complex of rooms that house stuff, including a sorter that will hold over a million things. Not quite full, but working on it.
However building a normal residence I would use stairs, 4 to 5 blocks high, 3 floors, a bacement etc.

Why do I still play in 1.6.4?

Don't be afraid to report vague, wishlisty, or redundant (Maybe all three) suggestions. Leave a post saying what's wrong.

Problems is you can't just build one!
