After playing on a few different servers, I've noticed some people have really efficient strategies and techniques for playing Minecraft. Do you know any? If so, share them! Here are some things I always have to do in Minecraft.
Make farms with just one water block. Water can sustain crops for four blocks out in each direction (including diagonal). So basically, you get a large plot of land with one water block in the center. If you put a half slab above it, that'll prevent you from falling in while you're farming too!
Wooden/stone pressure plates in front of doors. This saves you from having to always close the door behind you. It also works on fence gates too!
Tree saplings can grow right next to each other, but I usually like to place them with one block in between each other. You can make a grid of tree saplings that will grow into trees really fast. And then getting wood is always convenient and easy. This also works great for food too! If you have a bunch of regular trees (the ones that drop apples), as the leaves decay from you chopping trees, apples will fall. More trees equals more apples. Essentially this works as a wood and apple farm. Great for easy food.
What are some of your best tips and tricks?
Also, I'm in search of some fun people to share my server with. If you're interested in trying a new server, and if you enjoy semi-vanilla gameplay, click the banner in my signature for my server IP or read more about my server here: http://davidsights.com/reverie
1) When exploring caves, always explore higher passages first. Mobs like to rain down on you if you don't.
2) Pressure plates are bad in survival, mobs can walk over them and open a door into your house. Buttons are better.
3) Always carry a water bucket with you
4) For Skeletons
a) try to get them to chase you around a corner, hit them when they come around it.
If you have to attack one, charge them
c) Never fight a skeleton with water involved
5) A dirt house is still a house
6) Get a renewable source of food early in your game
7) You can never use too many torches
8) Always take wood with you underground, it's generally the only thing you can't find down there.
This is for Skyblock:
Make sure you sticky tape your finger to that shift key while expanding an island. There's been many a time when people on my island, I've told to build somewhere AND HOLD THE SHIFT KEY, REMEMBER THAT!, they've still fallen off and lost valuable stuff. It seems like that it's only the girls who actually get it. I'm a boy myself, so don't don't go on a rant about something I said. Yeah, also, when expanding your island, put the stuff you just can't afford to lose in your chest, so if you die, you still have those things.
Hopefully, there's some people out there who will read this looking for a way to stop rage quitting in Skyblock.
Always bring wood, cobblestone, and extra pickaxes on mining adventures. You can use wood for making new tools and torches, cobblestone for bridging over lava and such, and extra tools for when you run our and in a tight situation.
But srsly. How about multiple furnaces? Efficiency is VERY important in Minecraft. Oh, and I recommend building your house near your spawn point. Just 'cause.
Safest place to live = the end. Just go far away from the island by building a path that you can destroy later. No one will ever find you! Great for servers where griefing is allowed.
Stay away from deserts and other flat, open places at night. Mobs spawn like crazy there. Also covered forests. Sometimes the canopy is so thick that mobs will not burn and might even be able to spawn there during the day.
If you see a village, immediately run over to it and block off all the occupied houses. Villagers are kind of stupid and will sometimes not be able to find their way home by the time it gets dark. Plus, they can provide you with a lot of nice items and decent-sized houses to stay in.
Planting crops of the same type in a row is proven to make them grow faster. For example, plant wheat, potato, carrot, and so on in alternating rows. If you have a big block of one type of crop, they will grow normally.
Do not switch to peaceful when you're having trouble with mobs. Unless you are near a lava pool with half a heart and you have diamonds, grow up and deal with 'em. You will start enjoying the game less and less if you chicken out the second a skeleton appears.

That's an interesting tip about the crops! I had no idea rows grew faster than blocks of crops. I'm going to have to try that.
If you're living underground, you can still grow trees and crops. They just need enough light, water, and space! I think trees need at least 15 blocks of air above them.
Are mobs coming in your house or want a house only you can enter full of diamonds on a server? Try this with a command block: /testfor @p[r=5,name=<owner>]

That makes a lot of sense. Sometimes their aim just seems so spot on though. It's insane. x_x

My sig got screwed up because of a forum glitch and I'm too lazy to go find the banners to fix it.
So here's a cool server id; Runic-Moon.uk.to
