Ok, so I know the title sounds like a joke (it kind of is) or a troll post (it's not) but I am legitimately asking a question. I see a lot of videos on Youtube where the poster is saying "I'm not going to copyright this so use as much as you want". The first time I heard it I was like ok someone who doesn't know how copyright works but recently I've started hearing on roughly a dozen channels. Where in the world did these people get that they could copyright something in a video game? Being someone who knows how copyright works and has dealt with it I laugh a little every time I hear it. The only thing I can think of is that they are talking about Youtube's copyright system so other people don't make a video of the same thing? But even that can't really be copyrighted. But seriously who started the thinking of being able to copyright something in a game?
BTW for any of you who use that line in your videos you can't copyright something you build. You can say you were the first but you can't copyright it. Anything that is in the game is considered protected by the copyrights of the game. Meaning you can't copyright a piece of the game nomatter how cool your dirt house is.

Why not? You can copyright a work of art made in various other mediums like sculpted wood, oil paints, or written words, so why not one made of Minecraft blocks as well?

Minecraft is a game. And falls under the copyrights of games. Content within a game cannot be copyrighted outside of the game. Basically by programming the ability to make something in a game the developers have effectively created anything that can be done in the game. I know it sounds weird but that is how it works. Building a house isn't the same as Red Vs. Blue. RVB and Machinima content falls under a completely different set of laws and copyrights. (not to mention that they are considered parody).
Also last time i checked nobody could copyright a tree? As for painting and writing that falls under artistic copyright and that again has no bearing on anything inside of a game. Your examples are lacking.

That was a joke, by the way.

You think magic isn't real? Consider this: for every person, there is a sentence -- a series of words -- which has the power to destroy them.
