I am someone that always settles down in a desert. I have a plains biome thirty blocks from my desert home and going into it for a horse makes me feel like I am going into no mans land. What about you? What biomes do you prefer settling in?
I like extreme hills, because the large mountains are great for building mountainside homes. Caves are also very plentiful. I think deserts are the worst, because there's no trees at all, and mining is difficult.
I dunno, I feel that the desert makes for the best hunting grounds at night, because there is no vision obstruction. Preferably, I will settle down in a desert where a taiga or forest is nearby, so I can get plenty of wood without going far from home.
If I want to go hunting, I probably go to the desert as I usually find more mobs roaming about.
This is probably due to not having so many obstacles in the way.
I like to go in extreme hills or plains, often near a lake so it's easier to farm. I also like to make my houses in forests, but that's more for the wood than anything else. I really do like new savannah biome, so I might try to build a house there...
In general, any biome with sizable mountains. Before the 1.7 update, this was usually a mountain biome, but now I think I would prefer a savanna M or a forest hills biome, since they have lots of trees.

Time flies like an arrow, but fruit flies like a banana.
I prefer a plains biome near/at spawn; for example, the seed -123775873255737467 will spawn you in a plains biome in 1.6.x and 1.7.2:
1.6.x; spawn is just to the north (to the upper-left) at the edge of the desert (the village is naturally generated right near spawn):
1.7.2; spawn is just to the east/upper-right (I used MCEdit to copy my base over, although I'm not using 1.7.2 yet for my main world; I'll use the same seed though when I recompile my cave/ravine mod; I did modify the bytecode for 1.7.2 to generate even more caves than the old generation):
Although this is mainly applicable for my main world, since I need a big flat area to put down my base; otherwise, and for secondary bases, any flat spot about 20x20 will do; I'll also build into the side of a hill, but still have a flat area in front for a jungle tree or two (speaking of which, if you have a hard time finding a jungle in 1.7.2, use the seed above and go north around the mountains to the east and then east).

A lot of people, and even the Wiki, say that Extreme Hills has more caves, but unless you are referring to caves in the mountains themselves there is nothing in the code that links cave to biomes, only the world seed and chunk coordinates are used; in fact, if you make a world in large biomes or Amplified cave systems generate exactly the same for the same seed, aside from anything in mountains (the majority of cave systems are deep underground; the algorithm logarithmically distributes them with height, they can generate as high as y=120 but rarely, and you only get coal anyway above y=64).
Also, if you edit the bytecode to bring back the old cave generation (all they did was change a couple numbers, literally; from 40 and 15 to 15 and 7, it is easy to find them in JBE), they generate exactly the same as in 1.6.x but under different biomes.
Anywhere where wood is present, preferably normal forests next to a plains biome. But I also like building mountain side houses in extreme hills biome. Just my opinion.

Call me wierd, but I preferr starting in or near a jungle, particularly if there is a Jungle temple nearby (Free house!), or in swamp biomes or extreme hills. Of course, I generally tend to settle at the edges of said biomes because I like a bit of variety (and trying to clear out enough room for a house in the MIDDLE of a jungle is a bit annoying if there isn't an already existing Jungle temple or other structure there).
In my current SP game, I started out on a Jungle hill biome, but after a bit of quick exploration, found a jungle temple nearby next to a Byzantine lone tower (I have Millenaire, IC2, Portal Guns, Better Enchantment, Twilight Forest & Dungeon pack installed) that was near the edge of the Jungle biome and a Taiga biome, so I decided to make the Jungle Temple into my house (it needs some massive re-decoration, but otherwise is great). Also this pic from one of my friend's Feed The Beast mod server is a perfect illustration of how I like to roll with Jungle Temple bases:
I like swamps because they are relatively flat (easy to clear off large areas for building a base), fairly easy to defend (especially if you can find an island that is neither too big or too small), plenty of wood (what with the swamp oak trees), and you can farm slimes & witches there (although the Witch thing isn't really applicable in 1.7). Also if you're playing with Industrial Craft 2, you're more likely to find Rubber trees in a swamp than anywhere else, and half the time I can find enough productive trees (ones with at least 2 sap holes) that I can get all the sticky resin I need without having to plant any rubber trees of my own.
Extreme hills are nice because of the wide area view, plenty of cliffs for building a Dwarf Hole in the side of, and they are the only place you can find emeralds. I have pics on my Flickr account of a base I built in my 1.5 map with Millennaire and Mo Creatures on the top of an outrider of the extreme hills biome to the south. Nearby was a forest, a desert, small plains and swamp (not to mention the Japanese Village right next to spawn, parts of which can be seen in some screenshots):
I like to either be in a plains biome, where there is lots of flat ground and mob spawns, or a seaside home so I can have an underwater base for my mining and a nice shoreline for sugarcane and farming.

TheMasterCaver's First World - possibly the most caved-out world in Minecraft history - includes world download.
TheMasterCaver's World - my own version of Minecraft largely based on my views of how the game should have evolved since 1.6.4.
Why do I still play in 1.6.4?
