New farming mechanics are needed more than simply more food, although one does follow the other. I'd much prefer one or two completely new methods of cultivation to a dozen foods that can be made with current crafting and farming practices.
I reckon Mutton should be added, as well as calamari. Maybe even horse and ocelot meat. I mean, they're all animals. The player should get at least something decently edible from them.
I think baked items should have a more complicated recipe. For example, wheat would be made into dough. Some dough mixed with water would create bread dough. Cook it in a furnace and voilà! You got youself freshly baked bread. Another example is cake. It should require no milk, more eggs and perhaps even butter. All of that has to be put in a wooden bowl to make cake batter. Put that into the furnace and you've got a baked cake!...and a left over bowl. Maybe the icing should have its own recipe too! Stuff like that should be done to make the advanced food more expensive and therefore kill off some of the painful ease in getting food.
Would be nice to be able to see apples in trees, instead of them randomly dropping.

Unless they have unique effects compared to the other food, there is really no need for more food.
My thoughts in a nutshell. In order for more food to be necessary, IMO it either needs to be unique or we need to make most foods (e.g. the meats, carrots, potatoes) harder to get. Not much of a reason to add food if we've got 400,000 mostly identical food items right now.

Did something happen to you in your childhood to give you this unreasonable fear of rutabaga?
The only addition I really "miss" is making more stuff using eggs. In my moderately large farm the chickens plop those out like there's no tomorrow, and besides the pumpkin pie there is no real go-to food source that is made using eggs.

Baked potatoes are too good, in my opinion.
I feel like strawberries are in order.
I'd probably put in more input, but I'm tired...
But do you really need any of that? I can think of hundreds of food items that can be added, but what's the point? Unless strawberries heal you for more than steak and are just as easy or easier to get no one would even bother (unless people really like strawberries).
The health and hunger system should to be rethought before adding more common foods. The easiest way is to keep it how it is and not add food, exceptions for farming because crops are good for creative reasons and fishing just because it could use it. But they could always actually change the system and make it a bit more complex so that you find better food as you progress and not just the near best thing right when you start a world.
At the moment it is like this:
You start a new map, explore a bit to find a spot for your home and build it. Suddenly you realize that your food bar has only 3 bars left, making you search for food. You are searching for food till you think you have enough, get into your mine and mine a bit. 10 minutes later, you are out of food. Then, after playing on the map for quite some time, building farms etc. you have way too much and you never run out.
What i want to say: In the beginning, you need too much food to be nice, (i actually don´t like wasting 2 MC days of searching for food to get enough to mine some ores) and afterwards, after playing for a while, you get way too much. Your hunger shouldn´t drop that fast in the beginning, but should start to drop faster after some time, meaning you need to get food fast.
Example: A human can survive for a few weeks without eating anything. If he gets something to eat then, he won´t have hunger again that fast. If you eat 3 meals every day, you are used to it, making you hungry all the time. Now adapt to MC. In the beginning you are in, lets say, week 3 without eating anything, which makes the food bar drop way slower. Later on it starts to drop faster. At some point it will just stop dropping faster, but still fast enough to have to eat 3 meals every day.
. I was really hoping this was going to be a different kind of food suggestion, but I was mistaken. While a few new foods like the calamari and mutton would be nice, the two real issues are very different.
. The first one is that yes, food is (almost) always scarce at the beginning and has to have tons of time wasted to get, and then builds up later when you have a huge semi-automatic farm for all crops or something. A slider which makes food run down faster the longer you play without dying sounds good, but could be met by problems when someone logs on after an update with that in it. Say, they have been playing for 50 hours on one world before that. Now, as soon as they join, their hunger will drop faster than it's possible to eat cooked steak. Long-time survivors in hardcore worlds would eventually be forced to use /effect to get level 100+ saturation just to slightly slow the huger drop. So this could have it's own problems.
. The second thing about food which needs addressed is that it cannot be properly NBT edited to give custom effects. For example, you have a custom map and want the person to eat a poisonous potato but get strength for some reason, but they still get poison, BECAUSE YOU CAN'T EDIT THAT PROPERTY OF FOOD. Even Golden apples may have trouble with this, although I've never personally tried to edit them or other things. What needs to be done is to add a section to the food NBT file so effects can be added to the food that occur after they are eaten, not when in your hand.
. I hope you will excuse my rant, but I really want fixes to certain parts of food.
But they could always actually change the system and make it a bit more complex so that you find better food as you progress and not just the near best thing right when you start a world.
But this is a suriving game; if you find some really good food within the first few minutes of having to survive, you should go straight for it, instead of there being some sort of restriction to what food you can get until playing for a bit. Indirectly making food harder to get at the beginning, such as making baked items harder to make as I suggested are things I'm totally for. But being lucky and finding a bunch of melons and pumpkins near your spawn is something that I like and shouldn't be changed.
Sometimes it's the randomness factor in this game that makes me like it. I could start with the challenge of finding food, or start with a good amount of food nearby and have my first challenge for the world be something else.
Why Minecraft mobs should NEVER have multiple attacks:
- No other PC mobs do. - Mob behaviour is intended to be simple.
Why you should NOT name new "special ability" weapons as "XXX Swords":
- No other swords have special abilities. - Make a new kind of weapon.
Ideas for vanilla Minecraft should be posted in the Suggestions forum section, and you are required to use search to check for an already-existing suggestion topic for the same idea. There are already many topics discussing new food ideas.
Just give me motion.
