I have to say, it is, but only if you want to play legit survival. I have Nodus myself, and my friend and i xray sometimes in multiplayer to find ores. So if the server doesn't allow creative, then yeah, it's probably wrong. But... whatevs, my friend and i do it sometimes!
On servers, it allows people to find ores incredibly fast and have a huge advantage against others. It's unfair and wrong. on single player I couldn't care less if anyone uses xray, but personally it ruins the experience for me.
If you are going to start a topic on a controversial subject, you really should add your own opinion as well.
I use an X-Ray mod all the time. I use it for building stuff in creative, where being able to turn on/off specific blocks makes it far easier to do thing like debug redstone wiring, etc. It's an incredibly handy tool for making sure things look the way you want them to on the inside as well as on the surface.
That said, I don't use it in survival (thanks to the new launcher's ability to easily switch between .jar files), though I'll admit to occasionally loading up my SSP world with x-ray and taking a quick look around (yes, that's cheating, I know). Also, I don't play multiplayer at all anymore. If I did, I'd like to think I wouldn't use X-ray to my advantage, but the knowledge that it was available would be taunting me. So I just avoid it (I never really liked SMP anyway, since none of my friends play, and playing with random people is generally annoying).
What I really hate are the people that push to ban things like x-ray mods. I love using them, as (like I said) it's a great tool to have. Yes, some people abuse it. To the people that cry how it should be banned, I say "Hate the players that abuse it, not the tool itself."

I personally like playing with X-Ray, even in multiplayer, as long as everyone plays by the same rules. At my house we use a server on our lan, and I make sure everyone has xray installed and can use it. It removes the tedium of mining, and thus enhances gameplay. However, I do kind of wish I could define certain areas as xray free... because I don't like the fact that the players can find each-other's loot / hideouts with it. Maybe allow xray in the lower depths which are generally used for mining, but prevent it near the surface where people build houses?
I made a resource pack that makes surface-based textures like grass, sand, leaves, wood, etc, transparent so I can easily find caves when I'm messing around with cave generation in MCP, but I only use it on the MCP version of the game (this isn't really the same as an xray mod either, which can make ores, etc, stand out; if you want ores, just go in a cave and you can get hundreds in less than an hour, although that has been made harder to do in 1.7 unless you mod the cave generation).
I have an x-ray resource pack but I typically won't use it until I've done everything else legit. For instance, in my current survival world I've explored vast areas of the map, both in the overworld and in the Nether, I've beaten the Ender Dragon, found all three strongholds, found a 'shroom island, built a huge iron golem farm, created an immense village, have a very large, very nice house and large stores of all the important ores, numerous xp grinders etc. so there's not much left to do other than putz around. So right now I'm on a huge search for nametags for my zoo/menagerie project and x-ray is mighty handy for dungeon finding.
Yes, I think X-Raying is wrong under most circumstances. Especially in PvP worlds, you can find peoples' chests hidden underground, and ores that are deep underground. However, I think it's fine in your own world. Hawk_girl44
mojang can't do this as of right now since mojang has nothing to do with it, with the mod-api it might give servers an option but stil i dont see it happen
Mojang have no control over mods, with or without a modding API. As long as programs can be modified directly no amount of DRM or control schemes can fully prevent modding. Mojang could implement mod checks into the game, but what would be preventing modders from removing that check? Mojang could do mod checking on their side of the server-client communication, but what would prevent people from simply removing that check from the client? And so on. The whole concept of cracking relies on the ability to edit machine instructions of compiled programs, and besides Skype's rather impressive decryption scheme there is nothing that hasn't been cracked within a relatively short time.
Yeah, I really do.
It makes the game too easy, and it gives one group of people an advantage over another group of people.
X-rayers ruin the game for those who want to enjoy it vanilla style.
Mojang should disable mods for survival in my opinion.
But creative everything goes, even in multiplayer.
Have fun.
Why would anyone use it in creative? I feel like most people xray for ores and hidden chests. In creative, they can just spawn whatever item they want...

It doesn't really matter.
If you're using it for fun and stuff, not so wrong.
If you're using it to get diamond easy and lot's of iron in SURVIVAL and stuff, and then tell your friends you did this WITHOUT X-Ray and stuff, it's sought of wrong. Baaaa.
Yes it is wrong. Whats the point of mining if you can just dig a straight down hold where there is a huge clump of diamonds when you know there wont be lava? Server admins are commonly hassled with catching xrayers because all the anti-xray plugins cause lag and so many people do it. It's so hard to trust people now because they may have xray and overnight get piles of diamonds and get you and them banned on the server.
Here is a story of someone that I think was xraying: Once I was playing with this person and another guy offered to get us iron. The person I was with said yes and the guy went off to mine. Like 5 minutes later he came back with piles of iron. I was suspicious so I secretly followed him to his mine. It was a completely dark tunnel with turns and twists. *Presses disconnect*

Of course, the game often does that for me unless I use Optifine, if inconsistently and for entire chunks (a well-known bug with chunk rendering).
TheMasterCaver's First World - possibly the most caved-out world in Minecraft history - includes world download.
TheMasterCaver's World - my own version of Minecraft largely based on my views of how the game should have evolved since 1.6.4.
Why do I still play in 1.6.4?

When chests were made smaller and stopped filling the whole blockspace, it broke the ability to cleanly bury them.
