I believe minecraft is definitely something worth buying. I bought 2 copies of the game several years ago and I never regret buying them. Minecraft is filled with adventures that keeps you coming back to play more. I think if you have a creative mind or personality, minecraft is the game for you like it was for me. The game is only expanding and achieving new and fun things.
Pros of MC:
- It's a sandbox game (Definition for a sandbox game "HERE");
- Fun single-player experience where you literally create how your world and adventure will be;
- Amazing multiplayer experience where you can choose from a vast amount of servers that fit to your liking;
- Endless creations and ideas for the creative mind;
- Educational aspect (Minecraft can actually be education for children, check this article "HERE"
- Mods can be used in minecraft to make your gameplay experience even better!
- Too many to list :3
Cons of MC: - Addictive, though MC is very fun, it can be very addictive to the point where you wont see the sun for days! (Just kidding but it is addicting): - Server O' Plenty! There are so many minecraft servers, so many different choices to choose from that you might have trouble finding the right one to play!; - Just like any other multiplayer game, there are trolls and griefers who only want to annoy players - Creepers
- There are most likely more cons but I honestly can't think of any real problems with the game.
I hope I helped you decide whether you get the game or not. I really wanted to persuade you the best way I can by giving you facts so consider buying minecraft; its worth it.
Pros:
-You can play with your friends on your own server OR someone else's.
-You can use a custom skin without having to consult your friend.
-It's cheaper than most other retail games AND It's replay ability it leagues above any other game.
-The mods are endless.. And endless Fun!
-New features come out all the time, making for a new game experience frequently
Cons:
-It's money..
-As MLPuni mentioned, finding a server can be quite difficult, and finding a really good one even more so.
-Your life will be taken away because you're only playing Minecraft all day.
It's only $20 and arguably has as much content/playtime as many other major games that cost around $60, and there are perpetual free updates, and your purchase is also supporting an independent game studio, get it!

You can also try the demo, and watch videos of the game.
The pros of the game are that this is the only game where the world consists of your imagination, you can build amazing things, and you can survive in a randomly generated world.
The only negative things about the game are the amount of lag the PC version can have, and... *shudder* Creepers (so prepare for your jimmies to be rustled).
Thanks for all the input! i would like to clarify on a few points.
1. I have been playing minecraft for a while, so i know what it is like.
2. I dont think i have been playing illegally because i dont play on my friend's account.
3. I have played/watched people play on servers so i know about the lag and the endless searching for a good one.
4. I have a great username (if i do say so myself XP)
5. I knew the response would be biased but i wanted to see people's opinion on why they bought the game.
Once again, thanks so much for all the input!

I'd say almost every video game out there is trying to get you hooked some way or another. Just budget your time according to your priorities and you should be good!
Well let's think objectively here:
Pros:
-The game is tons of fun
-It's a great timesink, if nothing else
-There's a ton of mods out there so you can get rid of anything you don't like.
Cons:
-The game is a bit overwhelming, not giving you a tutorial or anything, so looking up the FAQ is always a good idea.
-It's overcrowded with people (namely kids who never use their accounts and dare I say, bronies.) so finding a server with the right amount of people is difficult, as well as getting a username that you like and isn't taken (I chose my name, including the 2, just ironically)
-You're not going to get anywhere on youtube with it, that's for sure
-It is a HUGELY addictive game, so you'll need a timer for taking breaks, or more importantly, checking the time.
In short, buy it. The fewer pros are far bigger than the multiple cons. You'll just need to be cautious.

Once again, i really know my stuff when it comes to minecraft... i used to be on the wiki 3+ hours a day just looking up stuff i didnt know. Im playing a past update though so i might be a little behind on the new biomes/plants/other stuff. But basically, i know to run to water when a creeper catches my eye.
