I always die whenever I head down into a cave..... I have tryed hundreds of times every time, i end up losing a bunch of diamonds and alot of books..... (TWO INFINTY BOOKS LOST AT THE SAME TIME) how can i last lonegr what do i do, I place torches but doesnt last much! The problem is I am way too unafraid of caves therefore, I end up doing crazy stuff that I shouldnt be doing!
i always get killed by lava even though im a frigging pro now and I once had a fire resist potion and I still died and lost my uber gear cause I panicked and did not switch to potion fast enough
frankly i can't remember the last time anything else killed me
I was mining for diamonds on my newest day of mining (before I expanded my house with a kitchen). I was at bedrock layer this time - and I was ambushed by lava when the server founder arrived. Luckily, my armor had resistance to fire! I was so very lucky that I decided to block off the lava and find my way up again.
At Layer 12 - lava is most common - so if you put it out and mine out the obsidian (or cobblestone if it was lava touching water), you'll find diamond under it. I was able to find 56 diamonds without dying, and I was a lucky miner.

Mining obsidian sounds like a very tedious way to get diamonds, even with Efficiency V; I find stacks of diamonds just by exploring caves without trying to mine out lava. Also, lava isn't more common at a particular layer but rather fills up caves to layer 10, so you can encounter lava all the way to bedrock at about the same frequency, plus there is no correlation between lava and diamonds, one of the most enduring Minecraft myths, only because in caves diamonds are mostly found near lava because they are on similar levels (diamonds are most common between layers 5-12, with a flat distribution, only falling off at the low end because of bedrock).
That said, even if you prefer caving it is a good idea to branch mine first until you have good armor and weapons. Some other tips, based on what I do: Instead of bringing torches, bring a stack of wood (logs) and just mine coal as you need it (one wood makes 32 torches, so you can make 2,048 torches before you run out). Bring a pair of Feather Falling IV boots to put on when exploring ravines and other big drops. And always, always bring a water bucket and dump it on (next to) lava whenever you see it (if on a ravine ledge, pour it down the side as you go along); conversely, dam up water springs so they don't push you into lava, or your items if you die. You can also use an Ender chest to store what you mine for extra inventory space and you don't lose the contents if you die (even if all chests are destroyed). You can also play on Easy instead (Normal is default) until you get better, or even Peaceful.
That said, the last time I died in lava was several months ago when I was running along in a cave and jumped over a 1 block high/wide rise - only to fall down a hidden 1x1 hole on the other side into a big pool of lava, with a Fire Resistance potion the only way to get out.

I was in a cave once, just mining some iron ores as such, until I saw a creeper, and i tried to escape by mining, but lava came pouring out. Luckily, a skeleton randomly tried to shoot me, but ended up hitting the creeper and making it mad. The creeper blew up the skeleton, I stopped the lava from going everywhere, and survived.
I can tell you, don't go into caves not knowing there purpose. Grab some armor, torches and tools and set out to adventure. Never go mining without torches, they are very important too.
Go into your caves with full iron armor, several chests in your inventory, and a generous amount of torches. As you travel plaster torches everywhere, and whenever you reach a fork in the tunnel place a chest. Travel down tunnels and focus on lighting them up, not mining yet. When you hit a dead end travel back and mine out every resource down that branch, then place something distinctive at the start of the dead end branch to show that you have extracted everything down that way. Put whatever you find in a chest, and be sure to pick up your chests and move them to the next chest when you are cleaning up tunnels. This keeps the resources in you chests safer and leaves you less likely to be killed while you are trying to extract more.
or alternatively just keep playing, you'll eventually figure it out your own strategy and the dying will stop, don't give up!

Try mining your own tunnels instead of entering unlit, existing ones. But if you find that boring, make sure you have everything essential in your hotbar. For example: torches, a sword, a water bucket, blocks for building bridges, food, etc.
You can try gaining more XP and then you can enchant your armour. When you do that, it will help you survive in those mob-infested caves. Keep the essential items in your inventory and keep important items like diamonds, in your case, in a chest. :3
If you don't die from mobs, then be sure to mine at layer 12; that's the (supposed) place where you could find more diamonds.
Also, remember, a chunk is 16x16, so you could go to a block's coordinates divisable by 16, 32, or 64, and then dig a 16x16 area from that chunk, starting from layer 16, the maximum layer where you can find diamonds.

I did that for about a year before I got enough from branch mining to make armour.
People see me and think I'm weak. But I can take care of myself, by myself.

TheMasterCaver's First World - possibly the most caved-out world in Minecraft history - includes world download.
TheMasterCaver's World - my own version of Minecraft largely based on my views of how the game should have evolved since 1.6.4.
Why do I still play in 1.6.4?

Well there's your problem. Be more cautious and don't do crazy things.

I do believe that is in direct violation of the very first common sense rule every minecrafter establishes.
