I have heard of something called a direct connect. Is that something to do with servers, or does it let you use the ip address of another computer so you can play minecraft with the person on just that computer. I want to play with my brother who lives in NY but I don't have the wish to use a public server nor the craft to build a private server. Is there another way?
Hey I think the setup you're saying might not work. I'm not sure which ISP you're using. But the Public IP that is being assigned for you is actually assigned for your router. There are options for dynamic routing, but its advisable.
As Azura mentioned, why not go with hosting companies that provide servers for the base cost?
Setting up a server is actually pretty easy. For the absolute simplest solution, you just run the MinecraftServer.exe from Minecraft.net and port forward 25565 to your computer from your router.
