You can do it manually by killing yourself a few times and then dropping items and teleporting or flying away a few times as shown in this video...
Don't worry it isn't that complicated, only the very first bit of the video is about finding your spawn chunks, the rest is about what you can do with them.

Killing and teleporting yourself shouldn't be necessary. Just use a compass to find the actual spawn point. Drop a trail of "breadcrumbs" (any disposable item you have lying around) as you run away in one direction -- make sure you go far enough that the chunks in between will become unloaded. Wait five minutes for items in the loaded chunks to despawn, and then head back. Items near where you waited, and items in the spawn chunks will have despawned, because the chunks were loaded the whole time. In between, there should be an area where the chunks were not loaded and so the items didn't despawn -- they will still be there on the ground. You should be able to use this to find the point between the spawn chunks (always loaded, items despawned) and the regular chunks (became unloaded, items still there). Do this in each of the four directions from spawn, and the points you have identified will mark out the sides of a square (or rectangle -- the always-loaded area is either 12 or 13 chunks long on each side, depending on your world, so it can be 12x12, 12x13, 13x12, or 13x13.) Voila! You've just identified your world's spawn chunks without using mods If you want, you can mark out the area with a wall, or with something set into the ground (that's what I did, I just placed stone brick set into the ground all along the border of the spawn chunks in my world.)
i think i'm going to tear my hair out, i've been looking for a way to identify spawn chunks for about 3 days, and then boom, finally my google-fu slaped me upside the head and i now want to hug you IronMagus!
is there any way of doing it with the level seed; without throwing items, beacause i'm playing in AMPLIFIED in 1.7.2 and there are no mods
Perhaps create a new world in creative using the seed in question and fly while throwing items? No, it doesn't overcome the issue of throwing items but it should make it easier to traverse through the amplified terrain. Yes, I'm also aware that it will be tremendously difficult to see items in some places but without many mods being available it doesn't seem like there are many ways around it.
Thanks!

You think magic isn't real? Consider this: for every person, there is a sentence -- a series of words -- which has the power to destroy them.

If you try this, let me know if it works for you.
The Wiki only covers methods for finding Spawn Chunks without modding.
The wiki page concerning the spawn chunks is both outdated and inaccurate. I have an up-to-date topic concerning the spawn chunks for 1.7.4 and higher here: http://www.minecraftforum.net/topic/1798239-function-14w03a-perma-loaded-chunks-void-worldschematic-downloads/
